Book excerpt: A profound, poignant story of a village healer and her community, from one of the world’s great contemporary novelists “A complex and illuminating portrait of a group of healers in China . . . [that] offers profound insights about what it means to pursue and live a fulfilling life.”—Publishers Weekly “A barefoot doctor herself, [Can Xue] has a unique and powerful way of transporting readers to new worlds where reality and magic are intertwined, and she uses her own experiences to make this novel feel more personal.”—Emily Park, Booklist In rural Yun Village, herbalist Mrs. Yi lives with her husband in a cottage at the foot of Niulan Mountain, where she gathers herbs to treat the ailments of the villagers by day and studies medicine by night. Sickness and herbs are lovers, she tells her patients, rejoicing when they recover, comforting them when they do not. All the while, she hopes to find a worthy successor to take up her mantle. As curious younger villagers observe Mrs. Yi and begin imitating her work—planting gardens and studying the art of healing—they soon discover that the line dividing life from death is porous, and the mountain is more mysterious than they ever knew. Drawing on her experiences as a barefoot doctor in her youth, Can Xue returns with a transporting novel that alights in the in-between spaces: between the living and the dead, healer and sick, nature and us.

Book Synopsis Song of Dewey Beard by : Philip Burnham
Download or read book Song of Dewey Beard written by Philip Burnham and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2014-10-01 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The great Native American warriors and their resistance to the U.S. government in the war against the Plains Indians is a well-known chapter in the story of the American West. In the aftermath of the great resistance, as the Indian nations recovered from war, many figures loomed heroic, yet their stories are mostly unknown. This long-overdue biography of Dewey Beard (ca. 1862–1955), a Lakota who witnessed the Battle of Little Bighorn and survived the Wounded Knee Massacre, chronicles a remarkable life that can be traced through major historical events from the late nineteenth into the mid-twentieth century. Beard was not only a witness to two major battles against the Lakota; he also traveled with William “Buffalo Bill” Cody’s Wild West show, worked as a Hollywood Indian, and witnessed the grand transformation of the Black Hills into a tourism mecca. Beard spent most of his later life fighting to reclaim his homeland and acting as “old Dewey Beard,” a living relic of the “old West” for the tourists. With a keen eye for detail and a true storyteller’s talent, Philip Burnham presents the man behind the legend of Dewey Beard and shows how the life of the last survivor of Little Bighorn provides a glimpse into the survival of Indigenous America.

Download or read book I Kissed the Fish written by Ruth Bradford and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2015-08-20 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are no such things as paved roads or nice, clean sidewalks in rural villages in Alaska. Most people who visit Alaska see Anchorage, Fairbanks, or maybe even isolated Juneau, the capital city. Those cities are neat, concrete bound, proper lower-forty-eight-type cities. But they arent the real Alaska. The villages with mud and mosquitoes in the summer, snow and ice in the winter, fishing and hunting out the front door practicallythose villages make up the real deal, the last frontier, Alaska. The people living in the villagesresourceful Native Americans, proud Eskimos, Aleuts, and Gussaks (which is what people of the land call Anglos and all others from the lower forty-eight)meet the challenges of the far north. That is Alaska! The people work together to deal with the cold, winter darkness, summers long days, and most importantly, the intensified human emotions involving survival. Larry and I lived and taught in Aniak, Alaska, that this story is based on. We fished, skied, snow-mobiled, threw a cup of coffee in the air when it was fifty degrees below zero, experienced the Kuskokwim River going through the pangs of break-up, and every few years: a flood, in which we got water in our basement. Life in rural Alaska is, at times, challenging. But the people make every moment rewarding.
Book Synopsis Memories of a Vanished Time by : Robert Blumenfeld
Download or read book Memories of a Vanished Time written by Robert Blumenfeld and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2022-12-27 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My mother, Ruth Blumenfeld, née Korn, was born on January 15, 1915; and died on August 18, 2015, aged one hundred years, seven months, and three days. My father, Max David Blumenfeld, was born on February 25, 1911 and died on December 26, 1994, about two months shy of his eighty-fourth birthday... I love my parents so much and I don’t want them to be forgotten, which is why I am writing this book. And I am writing this memoir for myself as much as for anyone else, because in doing so I bring my parents back to life in my memory. I do the same when it comes to my grandparents and aunts and uncles. I write also for my family members, who may wish to know more about our background. And I am writing for the general public, who may find this memoir of interest as being the embodiment in specific people of the history of the twentieth and early twenty-first centuries in the United States... When my father was born, World War One was several years away, and when my mother was born, World War One was raging. They lived through the Roaring Twenties and Prohibition, the Great Depression, and World War Two, and the subsequent wars... They lived through the rise and fall of the Soviet Union. The technological changes in their lifetime were the greatest in human history, from the evolution and ubiquity of the telephone, and of electricity and electric lighting, to airplane travel and the proliferation of the automobile, the invention and spread of radio and television, and the invention of such conveniences as frozen orange juice, the electric clothes drier, and the electric dishwasher, and, later on, of the internet, the computer and the smartphone, and of so much more... The world was a better place because Mom and Dad were in it. They did much political and social good in their time because they cared, and they wanted to help create a kinder, better, more loving world for everyone, a world where the ideals of equality and justice for all would at least begin to be fulfilled. When people like them disappear from the earth, the world is a poorer place.
