Book excerpt: In this pioneering exploration of African American slang - a highly informal vocabulary and a significant aspect of African American English - Maciej Widawski explores patterns of form, meaning, theme and function, showing it to be a rule-governed, innovative and culturally revealing vernacular. Widawski's comprehensive description is based on a large database of contextual citations from thousands of contemporary sources, including literature and the press, music, film and television. It also includes an alphabetical glossary of 1,500 representative slang expressions, defined and illustrated by 4,500 usage examples. Due to its vast size, the glossary can stand alone as a dictionary providing readers with a reliable reference of terms. Combining scholarship with user-friendliness, this book is an insightful and practical resource for students and researchers in linguistics, as well as general readers interested in exploring lexical variation in contemporary English.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A bold reconsideration of Hoodoo belief and practice Katrina Hazzard-Donald explores African Americans' experience and practice of the herbal, healing folk belief tradition known as Hoodoo. She examines Hoodoo culture and history by tracing its emergence from African traditions to religious practices in the Americas. Working against conventional scholarship, Hazzard-Donald argues that Hoodoo emerged first in three distinct regions she calls "regional Hoodoo clusters" and that after the turn of the nineteenth century, Hoodoo took on a national rather than regional profile. The spread came about through the mechanism of the "African Religion Complex," eight distinct cultural characteristics familiar to all the African ethnic groups in the United States. The first interdisciplinary examination to incorporate a full glossary of Hoodoo culture, Mojo Workin': The Old African American Hoodoo System lays out the movement of Hoodoo against a series of watershed changes in the American cultural landscape. Hazzard-Donald examines Hoodoo material culture, particularly the "High John the Conquer" root, which practitioners employ for a variety of spiritual uses. She also examines other facets of Hoodoo, including rituals of divination such as the "walking boy" and the "Ring Shout," a sacred dance of Hoodoo tradition that bears its corollaries today in the American Baptist churches. Throughout, Hazzard-Donald distinguishes between "Old tradition Black Belt Hoodoo" and commercially marketed forms that have been controlled, modified, and often fabricated by outsiders; this study focuses on the hidden system operating almost exclusively among African Americans in the Black spiritual underground.

Although absolutely certain that the young man currently sweating bullets on Death Row for the crime is innocent, the governor has no solid evidence. Powerless to stop the execution without incriminating his son, the governor turns to the only person he can trust. Nick Trevor, on his first case as a private investigator, has a scant seventy-two hours to save an innocent man. With the clock ticking, Nick forms an impromptu alliance with his old friend, Detective Gabriel MacDougal, who is investigating the sudden disappearance of one of the wealthiest men on the planet. Overcoming countless setbacks during their joint investigations, Nick and Gabe realize that both cases are intimately linked. As they plow their way through the seedy criminal underground and into the lifestyles of the incredibly rich and powerful, they unveil myriad shrouds of truth. While discovering that solving his case is merely the prelude to a complex tale of deception and betrayal, Nick Trevors ultimate reward is rediscovering several pieces of himself that he honestly believed had vanished forever.

In infancy, Dortheas unprepared grandparents were called upon to raise her after the death of her parents. As Dorthea grows older she escapes into her own imaginary world, allowing no other significant relationships except for her dog. An unexpected threat of losing her canine friend causes her structured world to shatter, forcing her to seek a solution and pursue some unanswered questions. The journey is launched through a lifelike dream, where Dorthea experiences new trials, tribulations, and encounters. She is taken to the imaginary Land of Indecision where evil curses and deception place the inhabitants into bondage. As she meets the characters in her dream, to include a raggedy man, lumberjack, and scaredy- cat, her true identity emerges. A new heart, wisdom, and courage surface. As wicked forces come against Dorthea, she flees from the Land of Indecision to the Land of Promises in pursuit of a new purpose and destiny. A supernatural encounter opens a door to Heaven and turns the key to Dortheas heart. Dorthea discovers the place Beyond the Rainbow where her Heavenly Father reigns. His promises of hope, life, and purpose are revealed. As she awakens from her dream, another journey begins with new relationships, opportunities, and revelation beyond what she could ever imagine. The invitation to this place is open to all. If you ask, it will be given to you. If you seek, you will find it. If you knock, it will be opened to you (Matthew 7:7).

Book excerpt: A riveting, modern-day gothic tale about a woman who succumbs and then must save herself from a dark lover That night was the first time I tasted champagne—French he told me, and as I loved all things French I was enchanted. I barely remember what we said—only that I did most of the talking: about leaving the South, my dreams of becoming a writer, my thoughts of Harlem . . . and of you. He said very little, only this: "The moment I saw you I knew you would be mine forever. And even death, even that, could not part us." Jocelyn's life feels empty, devoid of passion and purpose. After she finds a journal written by her "doomed" great-grandmother, Caprice, she is spellbound by her story: the escape from a loveless marriage, her seduction by a nameless lover who is both "demon and savior." Then, as if stepping out of a dream, Jocelyn meets Asa, her mysterious next door neighbor. Asa is charming, handsome, and daring and, as if by magic, she is drawn into his hedonistic lifestyle. Yet there is something unsettling about Asa. Luna is suspicious of this man, and although Jocelyn is dismissive of Luna and amused by her friend's warnings, she can't completely ignore them. She begins to wonder if things with Asa aren't quite what they seem.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Max's Fools is about an African-American engineer, obsessed with contacting his mother who passed when Max was only seven years old. It was two days before Max's 77th birthday and his children were throwing him a party at his daughter's house when they asked him to tell the whole story of those unnerving events earlier in his life. Max realized then that it was time to recount his mission into that ungodly world of the occult, and the pain it caused him, his employees, and their families. He also realized, when they asked him to tell them the true facts about what was going on back then, that his activities must have caused pain and much misunderstanding in his own family as well. He told them everything about all the paranormal activities he tried, including the voodoo ceremony and other unusual approaches he took trying to reach out to his dead mother. He was convinced that he was on the right track in contacting her, but he just fell short of actually reaching his goal. He felt that he needed to draw on his own experiences and culture to accomplish the task. Finding a cousin, almost by accident, who was knowledgeable about his family's background into mysticism and the dark arts, he modified his approach and the results were astounding as well as terrifying. Max's Fools is a compelling look into the mind of an educated engineer who was lured into a non-science based approach to try and discover his own demons
