Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I learned to cook from my grandmother and my mother, so that is where I want to begin this cookbook. My grandmother was legally blind. She recognized all seven of her grandchildren and her children by our walks and our voices. Needless to say, she could not see the numbers or notches on measuring cups or bowls, but that did not hinder her from being a great cook. When people have asked me for recipes, it has always been hard for me because recipes require measurements, and I never saw anyone measure anything! I watched my mother and grandmother and my aunt Betty just smidgen and pinch their way right through the kitchen to countless great-tasting meals and desserts. This is one reason my cookbook has taken so long to produce. I had to start measuring! Not an easy thing to do when your natural instinct is to just go to the kitchen and start cooking. Life was hard for my granny, but she knew how to love her family despite all her struggles and believe me, she had plenty on her plate. Granny loved her family, and she made sure that all of us understood the importance of family. She kept us all close. One important way Granny kept the family close was through meals. We always had Sunday dinners and holiday meals together. Cooking was her love language with her family. Granny was proof that we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us. When we love something that we do so much and the people that we do it for even more, then most all things are possible. Granny passed this down to my mother, to me, and to the rest of her family. I can see her in my mind's eye standing over her kitchen counter, with a kitchen towel hanging over her shoulder, cooking and pouring herself a cup of coffee with her thumb inside the cup so she knew when her cup was full. I am blessed to have family who are so much more to me than just relatives. They are some of my dearest friends. My sister, Bea, and I, my cousins Vickie, Terri, Glenda, and Rena, along with my granny, momma, and aunt Betty all used to get together at Aunt Betty's house on each of our birthdays. We shared food and lots of love and laughter. Now that my grandmother and mother have passed away, we don't celebrate birthdays the same, but we still try to celebrate each other's birthdays together. Being a close family was important to her, and it is important to all of us. I hope you enjoy reading the little stories in the cookbook and enjoy making and eating the recipes. Live. Love. Laugh. And cook!

If her roots are in the South, your grandmother’s recipe box probably includes a dish or two you’ve longed to recreate. How about her legendary chicken and dumplings or the loaves of zucchini bread she always baked from her garden’s summertime bounty? Does your mouth water when you think back on her Sunday pot roasts or the hash brown casserole she always made on Thanksgiving morning? You remember the strawberry pudding cake she whipped up for special birthday dinners? The meals you enjoyed at your grandmother’s table may very well have been your first exposure to the notion of Southern hospitality and the idea that we really can show our love through food. Faye Porter’s At My Grandmother’s Knee celebrates grandma’s cooking and the stories from the grandchildren whose own memories are sure to spark a few of your own. Throughout this collection, you’ll sit at the tables of dozens of Southern grandmas and sample recipes that have made them famous with their family for decades. Don’t be surprised if you see a few of your own family favorites along the way.

Book excerpt: The winner of The Next Food Network Star season five and New York Times best-selling author of Ten Dollar Dinners shares how God used food to invite her into His love. It wasn't until Melissa d'Arabian evaluated her relationship with food in light of her relationship with God that she began to appreciate food as not only a gift from him but also as a deeper invitation into his love. As she prayed, studied Scripture, and reflected on the stories from her own life, Melissa saw how God had used food to draw her into community, to redeem her moments of greatest tragedy, and ultimately to connect her more to him. In Tasting Grace, Melissa shares sixteen invitations that will transform your perception of food and the role it plays in your own life, from equality to connection to hospitality to stewardship and more. She explains how through her experiences, she learned to trust the ingredients--in recipes and in life--and join God in the act of creation. Whether you are a mom struggling to throw together a healthy meal for your family each night or a single woman longing for fellowship around your table, you will draw encouragement and inspiration from Melissa's reminder that all food, first and foremost, is a gift from God. When you return to him as the source, you will find the freedom to enjoy his beautiful and delicious creation. Advance praise for Tasting Grace “What a beautiful book. Using stories of her own triumphs and pain, Melissa digs past the surface layers of food as we see it on television, in cookbooks, and on social media. Rather, she helps us think about it in a whole new way—as nothing short of a spiritual force, a vessel through which we can experience (and extend) compassion, comfort, fellowship, love, enjoyment, and grace. It has given me a brand-new lens with which to examine the deeper significance of the food I cook, eat, and share.”—Ree Drummond, author of The Pioneer Woman Cooks “The intersection between faith and food is endlessly interesting to me, and Melissa articulates the significance and beauty of that intersection so well. Melissa is a great storyteller, and she invites us into her story and gives us a seat at her table with graciousness and wisdom. This is a lovely, meaningful book.”—Shauna Niequist, New York Times best-selling author of Present Over Perfect and Bread and Wine “This is a beautifully written book. These aren’t just words on pages; they are an invitation to a feast, to hospitality, and to finding lasting purpose in your life. Melissa has set a table fit for a King, pulled our chairs, and reminded us there’s a place for us here. This is a book that will not only feed your imagination but also your soul.” —Bob Goff, author of New York Times bestsellers Love Does and Everybody Always

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Life in the Smoky Mountains moves at a slower pace. For the Bedfords and their friends, life is full of ups and downs, especially when it comes to their family and matters of the heart. From This Moment Independent and outspoken, Grace Burgess is everything her conservative parents think she shouldn’t be. To their way of thinking, she should be settling down, not dreaming of adventure. But Grace wants to visit new places and see new things, without having to worry about her parents or being tied down to a man. Then she meets Ray. Ray Bedford isn’t looking to meet 'the one'. He’s perfectly content to continue his bachelor ways and to work his job as a firefighter with the Gatlinburg Fire Department. But when he meets Grace, he's more than willing to reconsider his single guy status. There's no doubt that there's a spark between Grace and Ray. And though Grace feels it, she's determined to live her life on her terms, even if means pushing the charming firefighter away. Her resolve is tested when Ray is involved in a near-fatal accident on the job. Facing the thought of losing him, Grace is forced to confront her feelings and decide which she wants more: her independence or the man she loves. Take Me Home Charlotte Bedford left her sleepy little hometown in the foothills of the Smoky Mountains to make a name for herself as a fashion photographer in the Big Apple. She craved success and independence, but most of all she wanted to be in a place where she wasn't known as the Bedford girl or Landon Montgomery's girlfriend. But her life in New York begins to take its toll, and she finds herself longing to return to her southern roots in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. What she doesn't know is the one man she ever really loved had never left. Landon Montgomery was a southern boy, born and raised. And as much as he'd loved Charlotte, he'd had no desire to follow her to the big city, instead he’d stayed behind to help run his family's business. When Charlotte returns home, he knows they have to reconcile their past if they are to have a future. The aftermath of a family emergency makes them realize they were meant to be together, but is it already too late? Feel The Heat Firefighter Colt Bedford loves the job, even when the job almost kills him. Two years later, the accident still haunts him. What began as nightmares starts to creep over into his waking moments. He's done his best to hide it from everyone, including his family, but one particular incident during a rescue exposes his vulnerabilities, putting his job in jeopardy. Single mother Amy Kincaid had lived a nightmare of her own. After escaping her abusive husband, she's doing her best to raise her daughter on her own. Even though her ex is still making trouble for her, she's focused on her daughter and getting from one day to the next, with no thought of inviting a man - any man - into her life. Amy's world collides with Colt's when the firefighter and his partner carry the mother and daughter from their burning home. After the fire, a simple thank-you gesture from Amy turns into something neither of them had planned. Colt feels more for Amy than he has for any other woman before her, but after her failed marriage, Amy doesn't trust her heart. When Amy's ex-husband strikes again, putting their daughter's life in danger, Colt and Amy have to decide: do they go their separate ways or do they go after everything they didn't know they wanted? Smoky Mountain Christmas The Bedfords are playing matchmaker. And they have a little help. Grace and Ray Bedford have opened up the family home for their annual Christmas party and half of the Gatlinburg area has been invited. This includes Reeanne Hawthorne, owner of Smoky Mountain Sweets, a popular local candy store. A classic workaholic, Reeanne only came to the Bedford's Christmas party because she was pressured by a friend into accepting the invitation. Feeling out of place in the crowd, Reeanne thought she'd be better off doing inventory or going over the books. At least until a certain firefighter caught her eye. Seth Bennett still hasn't gotten over the fact his best friend, Colt Bedford, beat him at his chance at Amy, the girl of Seth's dreams. He couldn't hold a grudge, though, especially since Colt and Amy are engaged. And since Seth considers the Bedfords more like family than friends, there are no hard feelings. Especially once Seth meets Reeanne. When Amy's sisters, along with the Bedfords, notice the sparks between Seth and Reeanne, they count on some Christmas magic (and a little scheming) to help the pair meet under the mistletoe. Stay With Me Park ranger Clay Bedford is content with his life. He has, and loves, the dream job he’s always wanted. His close-knit family lives nearby, and he has good friends and a loyal dog for company. He isn’t looking for love. He’d suffered through the loss of love before; she was the one who got away…until she came back. Hotel manager Abigail Blanchard has dealt with her cold and controlling parents her entire life. When she was in college, her parents made a decision that forced Abigail to stay away from Clay, leaving her world turned upside down. After bending to her parents’ will that one last time, she’s found a way to move beyond it to build her own life on her own terms. Bumping into Clay Bedford again, however, was not something she’d planned for. When Clay responds to an accident involving Abigail somewhere off the beaten path in the Smoky Mountains, he has no idea how seeing her again will change his world. After an unexpected night together, the pair realizes the spark is still there between them. Will they be able to overcome their past or will Abigail’s parents force them apart forever?
