Here, he tells the story of how he and his brother, Reg, spent the last years of the 1970s fighting suburban boredom to become, in the words of renowned climbing historian Chic Scott, “one of the leading figures in Ontario rock climbing throughout the 1980s.” With its vivid accounts of short and nasty climbs, dubious mentors, hapless climbing partners, teenage crushes, bad cars, underage drinking and questionable climbing techniques, this is a memoir of coming of age in a simpler era of climbing, told with compassion, humour and insight.

Book excerpt: A Walker Trilogy: Three to Read on Walker Mountain is a compilation of stories set in different times during the lives of the Walker families the 1900s, 1949, and 2013. They recount the Walkers' struggles to raise children, find happiness, and keep their faith. The Walker women prevailed over losses and challenges while their men served God and America, through inventions, music, and the sacrifices of military service. The stirring stories rekindle memories of harmonicas, poetry, and circle letters. Recently found decades-old recordings of family music have been preserved and recorded for current generations to enjoy. As for their letters, they were the electronic mail of nearly a century of Walker writings. The WWW (wild Walker women), with adventurous spirits, preceded the other www the World Wide Web. Every family has their stories and traditions; if you ever meet a WWW, she will bless you with a bit of music, a poem, some storytelling, tea on a back porch, a sumptuous meal, a lap quilt, or a horse ride. A Walker Trilogy ties together the strength of past generations of the Walker family with the promise of the newer generations of their clan. These intimate family stories offer an excellent opportunity to observe human strengths, perseverance, and the refusal to succumb to defeats throughout the decades.

Book excerpt: Return to Nagspeake for a new fantasy adventure from the bestselling author of National Book Award nominee Greenglass House. Lucy Bluecrowne and Maxwell Ault are on a mission: find the three pieces of a strange and arcane engine they believe can stop the endless war raging between their home country of England and Napoleon Bonaparte’s France. During the search, however, their ship, the famous privateer the Left-Handed Fate, is taken by the Americans, who have just declared war on England, too. The Fate (and with it, Lucy and Max) is put under the command of new midshipman Oliver Dexter . . . who’s only just turned twelve. But Lucy and Max aren’t the only ones trying to assemble the engine; the French are after it, as well as the crew of a mysterious vessel that seems able to appear out of thin air. When Oliver discovers what his prisoners are really up to—and how dangerous the device could be if it falls into the wrong hands—he is faced with a choice: Help Lucy and Max even if it makes him a traitor to his own country? Or follow orders and risk endangering countless lives, including those of the enemies who have somehow become his friends?

Book excerpt: Fred Foreman was born just before the great depression on the family farm near Blue Rapids, Kansas. His story, written for his grandchildren, starts with the difficult economic times for his family during his youth. He describes the feelings of a young lad in his late teens who was desperately needed at home to help his family and could see no independence for himself until he was drafted into the military in 1942. It was there that he gained confidence in his own abilities, and following four years of service, he took advantage of the G.I. Bill, earning B.S. and M.S. degrees from Kansas State University, and the PhD, at the University of Missouri, in just five years. He served on the faculties of Kansas State University, the University of Missouri, and the University of Minnesota before his 31 years at Iowa State University. During his career Foreman was recognized by Iowa State University, The National Dairy Shrine, The American Dairy Science Association and the University of Missouri for his student teaching, academic advising and leadership contributions to the dairy industry. During his professional career he developed skills in the physical evaluation of dairy cattle, and he describes some of his experiences in this work in 43 states and 14 foreign countries.

Book excerpt: "A swoon-worthy cowboy, fun flirtation, blazing passion and a sweet little boy will have readers wanting to wrangle their very own cowboy."—RT Book Reviews, 4 1⁄2 Stars, TOP PICK! Ranch Foreman Shane Lockhart's livelihood—and sanity—are threatened when the ranch is taken over by the late owner's granddaughter, the most beautiful, exasperating woman Shane has ever met. Inner-city veterinarian Lindsey Ward always loved visiting her grandfather's Wyoming ranch, so it breaks her heart to have to sell it. She'll miss the scent of hay and sagebrush under the wide-open sky, but at least the sale will help fund the clinic she's always dreamed of. Ruggedly handsome foreman Shane Lockhart and his adorable son aren't making it any easier for Lindsey to focus on what has to be done. It's exhilarating going toe to toe with a rough, tough cowboy whose stubborn idealism matches her own, but it's Shane's tenderness that might tip Lindsey's heart over the fence. The Cowboys of Decker Ranch series: How To Handle A Cowboy (Book 1) How To Kiss A Cowboy (Book 2) How to Wrangle a Cowboy (Book 3) Praise for How to Kiss a Cowboy: "Kennedy's characters are sexy, smart, troubled, flawed—real. If you are a fan of Western romances, Joanne Kennedy should be at the top of your list of favorites." —Fresh Fiction "The rough-and-tumble world of the Wyoming rodeo circuit is brought vividly to life. Readers will love her intensely complex characters and depictions of deep emotion." —Publishers Weekly

This book was released on 2007-05-24 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Melting of the Snow to the Greening of the Fields is my sixth book. It is the story of the St. Patrick’s Day Flood of 1936 as seen through the experiences of the fictitious Claymoore family and their friends and acquaintances. The fictional Reverend Claymoore is a coal miner and a Presbyterian preacher who lives in the coal patch of the Back Bench Mining Company disparagingly known as Bed Bug Row. The story takes place in just a few months during the year of 1936. It is about the flood, yes, and about love and courtship and about the people of southwest Pennsylvania who constantly find themselves, as the speech goes, opposing a sea of troubles in an effort to end them. The things they do to rise above their circumstances are simple, unselfconscious, and even at times heroic. However you see their actions, whether audacious and noble, sad or comical, you must know that they are always, to my knowledge, typical. The facts of the flood are true as reported in the 1936 issues of The Pittsburgh Press, which was my primary source of information. Also included in the accounts of the flood are personal recollections from the few people I could find who lived through it.
