Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gran and Mr Muckey is the first volume in a family memoir, seen through the youngest of three brothers, Sajit Contractor. They live in Edgware among Jewish refugees from Hilter's Germany in 1938/9. It related hilarious incidents during the Blitz with Sajit having numerous exciting experiences at school in Caterham, Surrey, where bombing is frequent. It also includes a period of evacuation to Cornwall where he and his brothers are sent home through misbehaviour. Later, Sajit's school in evacuated to Exmoor where he enjoys a very odd education based on cricket, rugby and horse riding. After that, Sajit is taken fire-watching by his father in the family business in Camberwell Green. Here he has first-hand experience of the bombing of the East End of London. Through all this the author introduces a succession of fascinating characters, foremost among them being his Indian grandmother and the family's arthritic garder, Mr Muckey. They have a most odd courtship.Sajit's recalls all this with a sharp, satirical eye and his early experiences of racism and the peculiar behaviour of adults adds plenty of spice to the book.

Book excerpt: Record-breaking England cricketer, wartime RAF hero, Tottenham Hotspur footballer, and husband to five wives... this is the captivating life of one of England's most remarkable yet often overlooked cricketing heroes. 571 first-class matches from 1934 to 1958. 36,965 runs. 29th on all-time lists. 86 centuries. 479 wickets. Bill Edrich was one of the biggest cricket stars of his time along with Denis Compton and Len Hutton. He was a Wisden Cricketer of the Year in 1940 and played football for Norwich City and Tottenham Hotspur during the 1930s. In the first biography for 30 years, award-winning writer Leo McKinstry recounts Edrich's audacity both as a cricketer and an RAF pilot. Edrich's flying prowess brought him a promotion to Squadron Leader and won him the Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC) after his part in a courageous daylight raid over Cologne in August 1941. The same action-filled intensity applied to his turbulent private life. A man of keen amorous enthusiasms, he was married five times but rarely allowed his ardour to be inhibited by any wedding vows. Equally unrestrained was his fondness for alcohol and partying, though this trait brought him into conflict with both the cricket and the judicial authorities. After one particularly exuberant display of intoxication during a home Test match, he even lost his place in the England team, only to return for the famous Ashes triumph of 1953. A history of cricket victories, explosive controversies, wartime glory and a life lived to the fullest, this compelling biography reveals the story of one of cricketing's greatest characters.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Meet Mare, a World War II veteran and a grandmother like no other. She was once a willful teenager who escaped her less than perfect life in the deep South and lied about her age to join the African American Battalion of the Women's Army Corps. Now she is driving her granddaughters—two willful teenagers in their own rite—on a cross-country road trip. The girls are initially skeptical of Mare's flippy wigs and stilletos, but they soon find themselves entranced by the story she has to tell, and readers will be too. Told in alternating chapters, half of which follow Mare through her experiences as a WAC and half of which follow Mare and her granddaughters on the road in the present day, this novel introduces readers to a larger-than-life character and a fascinating chapter in African American history.

Book excerpt: In this vibrant collection of autobiographical essays, Sandra Rushing gracefully blends spirituality with old-fashioned honesty to communicate life s lessons and teach us what it means to be human. Set at the historic Poor House Farm in the tranquil Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, this is the story of the tragedy and mystery of growing up, the exhilaration of freedom, and the empty hunger of grief. Her Scottish father s fierce temper and unbounded generosity, her mother s Irish melancholia, and the power of the land merge and convey a passion felt on every page. Rushing s lyrical description and moving tales of strife, hope, and love craft the premise of the human journey that fighting and scrapping are part of it, whatever form they take, that life is a gift, and that all things have a purpose. -- Amazon. com.

Book excerpt: "The fourth Ragtime Mystery is filled with warmth and wonder and interesting music trivia, buoyed by the relationship between the two sleuths, which may well echo that between the late Larry Karp and his son, who finished this final installment after his death." —Kirkus Reviews It takes one moment in 2016 for ragtime music expert Alan Chandler to go from sitting in his hotel room in Sedalia, Missouri, to standing beside the King of Ragtime—Scott Joplin—at his upright piano in 1899. Chandler suddenly finds himself more than one hundred years earlier inside the famous Maple Leaf Club with its gas chandeliers, massive walnut bar, gaming tables, and pals surrounding the noted pianist and composer. "What in the hell is going on? Am I dreaming?" Clearly something unexpected is going on for Chandler in the fourth and final Ragtime Mystery by father and son Larry Karp and Casey Karp. A longtime friend Mickey Potash phones Chandler, top ragtime performer and national expert on Joplin, to say that a duffel filled with Joplin's handwritten music has surfaced. Chandler and his grandson, Tom, race from Seattle to Sedalia to evaluate what may be the most important find in popular American music. Potash shows them initial pages which look authentic, but before they can get the duffel hidden in a padlocked closet, he is tortured and murdered. The duffel is stolen. Disappointment encourages a resurgence of symptoms in Chandler's Stage 4 cancer. He's determined to validate the music before time runs out. Tom, and later his wife, Miriam, help him. Another murder complicates their investigation. The trail to the duffel is crowded: Jackson and Saramae, two young people with journalism in their blood, want to solve the crime, as do homicide detectives and antique shopkeepers. Not surprisingly, the roots of the lost music lie in past emotional conflict, now tangled in genealogical warfare.

Book excerpt: Witty, warm and wackya spiritual journey of self-discovery The Curious Autobiography of Elaine Jakes offers us slices of classic Americana lovingly transformed by the spirit of Welsh storytelling. It is the spiritual odyssey of a woman finding her way back to faith. Her journey is touching, amusing, and at times hilarious. Rev. Timothy Vaverek, S.T.D., Christian Writer Witty, wacky, zanythis is a postmodern romp which astonishes with moments of spiritual wisdom and provocative piety. David Lyle Jeffrey, Distinguished Professor of Literature and the Humanities, Baylor University, Author, Houses of the Interpreter and People of the Book In The Curious Autobiography of Elaine Jakes, author H.R. Jakes offers a fictionalized account of Elaines life, telling a variety of stories that involve a romantic ride in an old-fashioned car, a frightening cheese plate, a magic sword, and a cross-dressing monkey. Her story is not one, but many as she humorously reveals time and again how connected her own narrative is to that of her Welsh forebears. During the journey, Elaine, a school teacher in the vivacious and eccentric community of New Hope, Pennsylvania, gains not only an appreciation of the world but also of her heritage, herself, and God.

Book excerpt: “Morgenstein has blended baseball and science fiction, and created a complex, nightmarish future that grabs the reader and doesn’t let go until the final pitch. This series is a home run!” —Geekstronomy.com “A classic of modern speculative fiction that also examines today’s real-world socio-political environment. Plus, baseball!!” —Fenway Nation Winter 2099 Finally cleared of treason charges, Puppy Nedick is now the Commissioner of Baseball. Vowing to return the game to its previous national glory, he becomes alarmed when there is little interest in the sport. Troubled by flagging attendance, excessively polite fans, and the poor quality of play, Puppy makes a radical decision: return the dying sport to the game of old. Attendance soars and suddenly gamegoers are rooting for the home team, participating in bobblehead giveaways, waving banners, and vying for autographs of the celebrity players. Baseball is becoming the national pastime again. And those who are in power are watching. The revival of the sport unleashes dormant passions and new fears, creating questions about America’s revised history and challenging the very foundation and the basic laws of the controlling Family. Once again a scapegoat, baseball becomes the rallying point of resistance as ordinary heroes try to bring the world together against the terrifying specter of impending nuclear annihilation, in the explosive conclusion to the Dark Depths trilogy.

But Ryser has a favor to ask. He needs Zack to find his estranged daughter, Jen, whom Ryser hasn't seen in more than twenty years. He wants to make amends and spend what little time he has left with her. When last heard from, Jen had bought a big sailboat and was bound for the Bahamas with some college friends. A private detective hired by Ryser to track her down has gone MIA. One of Jen's friends has jumped ship, under curious conditions. And there's the specter of an international piracy ring, known to hijack and plunder private yachts passing through island waters. With little to go on, Zack embarks on a mission that will take him from one end of the Bahamas to the other. It's home to all sorts of rogues and rascals, with plenty of places to hide---a wonderment of islands that Zack calls Baja Florida.
