Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To meet the demands of this first comprehensive catalogue of Anglo-Saxon stone sculpture, Professor Cramp, the series editor, has devised a new system of description capable of dealing with the complex ornament of the material. As well as classifying forms, shapes and decoration, she also discusses techniques of carving, dating methods and epigraphy. The extensive use of line drawings to illustrate each point makes this the most useful and compact work produced on the subject to date--an invaluable reference tool for anyone interested in early medieval art and design.

Book excerpt: First edition of The grammar of ornament, a global and historical design sourcebook published by the English-born Welsh architect Owen Jones, one of the most influential design theorists of the 19th century. According to Wikipedia, the Grammar of ornament presents Jones's 37 key principles of decorative arts governing the arrangement of form and color in architecture and the decorative arts. The first 19 chapters of the Grammar illustrate historically and geographically diverse examples of decoration, with chapters on Arabian, Turkish, Moorish, and Persian ornament. The last chapter, "Leaves and Flowers from Nature," affirms the basic principle of ornamental design throughout the world, that is, the form found in nature. "The Grammar was hugely influential in design schools in the latter half of the nineteenth century, and is still in print today, maintaining its relevance as a source of inspiration for contemporary designers."

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of Anglo-Saxon Grammar, With Copious Notes: Illustrating the Structure of the Saxon and the Formation of the English Language Early associations and impressions are seldom entirely removed. From our youth, we have been taught to look upon the Greeks, and Romans, as the most learned and polished people. A long acquaintance with writers of both nations, renders us familiar with their history; and, in riper years, when these people are named, our youthful feelings and veneration are recalled, and our imaginations dwell with delight on the pleasure we have derived from the company of our old classical friends. In the same proportion as we have admired and revered the Greeks and Romans, we have been led to disregard and despise the Goths, for raising the standard of liberty upon the ruins of the Roman empire. We have insensibly imbibed the opinions of the Roman authors which we have read, and, with the name of Goths, have constantly associated every species of ignorance, cruelty, and barbarity; not considering that we, as Englishmen, are indebted to the descendants of the Gothic tribes for our existence, our language, and our laws. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Grammar of the Anglo-Saxon Language If we are partly led to the study of the Latin and Greek languages from the' light which they throw upon the structure of our own, the anglo-saxon, for the same reason, has claims upon us almost equally great, forming, as it does, the broad basis upon which the others rest. So true is this, that it can be safely affirmed that no one has a thorough knowledge of English, who is unacquainted with an element of so much importance.
