Book excerpt: There was much development of both education and industry in post-World War II Britain. There was, on the one hand, an extension of public education to the secondary school stage and the substantial financial help that was available, which meant that increasing numbers were going to university. On the other, there had been immense advances in scientific and technical knowledge and its application to industry. These advances in industry produced an increase in the demand for trained graduates. This book, first published in 1957, examines this correlation, and provides guidance for both graduates and hiring managers. This title will be of interest to students of human resource management and business studies.
Book Synopsis An assessment of industrial employment skill gaps among university graduates by : Mirza, Faisal Mehmood

This book was released on 2014-04-21 with total page 39 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this study is to examine different assessments of employers and students about job skills leading to differences defined as skill, employability, and perception gaps based on surveys of 100 industrial employers and 151 final year students from 6 universities and postgraduate colleges in the Gujrat-Sialkot-Gujranwala industrial cluster. Factor analysis grouped 24 specific skills into the three interpretable categories: communication and business specific skills, core employability skills, and professional skills. The results suggest gaps in all three respects for each of the skill categories. Employers were least satisfied with the professional skill s of new employees compared to their scores on the importance of these skills. Students also scored their own professional skills lower than the importance of these skills in the job market. Smaller but similar differences arise for the other skill categories.Students generally gave higher nominal scores to the importance of all skills than were given by employers. When disaggregated by discipline, students in more technical fields (engineering, computer science, and IT), which are supposed to possess high level of technical skills, claim a shortage of these skills, whereas students from economics, commerce and business administration indicated they were neither sound in professional skills nor the softer skills. Close coordination among all stakeholders through internship programs for students, development and timely revision of market oriented curricula, and special skill enhancement training programs are recommended steps to enhance productive youth employment in Pakistan.

Book Synopsis The Transition from Graduation to Work by : Subas Dhakal
Download or read book The Transition from Graduation to Work written by Subas Dhakal and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-08-26 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reports on the findings from a research study of vocational and higher education graduates’ employability challenges. The nature and extent of these challenges, their underlying causes, and effective strategies to address the problems in this area are all analysed from a multiple-stakeholder paradigm. The primary focus of the book is on governments; secondary, vocational, and higher education systems; and industry employers - rather than graduates themselves - in order to highlight the policy and strategy implications for governments, industry and educational systems. Readers will acquire comprehensive information on the nature and extent of graduate employability in terms of country-specific challenges, together with a deeper understanding of their complex causes, and the inter-relatedness between governments, educational systems, industry sectors, and potential employers. They will also be provided with a broad range of stakeholder strategies designed to effectively address these challenges within integrated national and regional approaches.

This book was released on 2018-10-03 with total page 105 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examining pathways from creative education to work, and preparation for these pathways within higher education programs, in the light of long standing labour debates, this book explores the creative launch experiences, destinations, and contributions of graduates emerging into an enormously diverse and heterogeneous creative workforce. Coming from university degree programs that tend to focus on the development of specialist creative disciplinary skills, graduates emerge into the diverse workforce with fairly narrow career identities. With contributions ranging from quantitative analyses of large longitudinal data sets to in-depth qualitative cases, the book aims to provide a range of studies that speak to the complexity found in creative careers. This book was originally published as a special issue of the Journal of Education and Work.
