Two sample groups were identified at the onset of the research: ten students who were socially promoted from sixth to seventh grade with poor or failing ELA scores and ten students who were promoted from sixth to seventh grade with passing ELA scores. Two sample groups of student's ELA scores were tracked for their 6th, 7th and 8th grade years. Descriptive statistics for both groups in cliding the means of their ELA scores and standard deviation between the scores were analyzed. ... Significant results were found in the standard deciation between the ELA year-end scores in the eighth grade year of the two sample groups and between the means of the ELA MCAS scores of the two sample groups ... The researcher recommends that further in-depth studies be performed with larger sample groups from varied school districts to determine the broader effects of social promotion.
