Book excerpt: Presents information from the primary abiotic forces defining the system, and from the present hydrology, biogeochemistry and physics of major sites of organic carbon production of the McMurdo Dry Valleys. Additionally, research on the physical, chemical, and biological properties of the dry valley soils is included. The role of environmental management in long-term ecological studies is also addressed. The accompanying CDROM provides details and scale to visualize the McMurdo Dry Valleys from an ecosystem perspective.
Book Synopsis Perspectives on the Bird's Head of Irian Jaya, Indonesia by :
Download or read book Perspectives on the Bird's Head of Irian Jaya, Indonesia written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-07-31 with total page 998 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bird's Head Peninsula of Irian Jaya has long been an area neglected by New Guinea Studies. Only in the late seventies, interest began to focus more intensively on this scientifically important border area between Austronesian and Papuan languages and cultures. In the early nineties, this led to the creation in The Netherlands of the Irian Jaya Studies programme ISIR, which organizes and coordinates multi-disciplinary research on the Bird's Head Peninsula. Within this framework, study of the peninsula has reached a peak, with research being conducted in the area by scientists from different disciplines: anthropology, archaeology, (ethno)botany, demography, development administration, geology and linguistics. The diverse perspectives of these disciplines are subject to constant internal debate. Through ISIR and other research initiatives, there is a growing body of data on and insights into the various disciplines concerned with this fascinating area, with each discipline developing its own specific perspectives on the Bird's Head. These perspectives were presented during the First International Conference Perspectives on the Bird's Head of Irian Jaya, Indonesia, organized by ISIR in cooperation with the Indonesian Institute of Sciences LIPI (Jakarta) and the International Institute for Asian Studies ILAS (Leiden) and held at Leiden University, 13-17 October 1997. Researchers were informed on current perspectives in many disciplines to facilitate integration of findings into wider, interdisciplinary frameworks and to stimulate international debate within and between disciplines. As a result of the Conference, the forty-two contributions in these Proceedings present a wealth of recent developments from various disciplines in New Guinea Studies.
Book Synopsis Plate Boundary Zones by : Seth Stein
Download or read book Plate Boundary Zones written by Seth Stein and published by American Geophysical Union. This book was released on 2002-01-21 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume collects some recent studies on the motions, mechanics, and earthquakes that take place within plate boundary zones. Many of the studies reflect advances made possible by the development of space geodetic techniques. Among the topics of the 21 papers are tectonic processes in the Eurasian-African plate boundary zone, the structure of the Dead Sea basin, the January 2001 Bhuj earthquake in India, geological investigations of the Kamchatka region in Russia, and crustal shortening and extension in the central Andes. Book Synopsis Monitoring the Earth by : Claudio Vita-Finzi
Download or read book Monitoring the Earth written by Claudio Vita-Finzi and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2002 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Monitoring the Earth is the first book to review the recent advances in satellite technology, computing and mass spectrometry that are opening up completely new avenues of enquiry to Earth scientists. Among the geological changes that were previously considered too slow or too extensive for direct measurements and that can now be monitored directly are continental displacements, mountain uplift, the growth and decay of icesheets and glaciers, the faulting and folding of rocks, the progress of weathering and sedimentation, and the growth of coral reefs. In addition to these developments, the book assesses progress in fields not normally considered part of physical geology, such as the shape and orbit of the gravity and the terrestrial magnetic field. The results from the new findings are already helping Earth scientists analyze and explain the underlying mechanisms, notably with regard to the storage and release of strain during earthquakes and the interaction of glacial history with the Earth's rate of rotation. The outcoe is a foretaste of the physical geology of the space age.lly illustrated with line drawings and photographs, and ith a bibliography that encompasses the scattered and disparate litarature, Monitoring the Earth is intended for undergraduates in geology, geomorphology, geomatic engineering and planetary science, but it should also be of interest to astronomers and historians of science.

Book Synopsis Contributions of Space Geodesy to Geodynamics by : David E. Smith
Download or read book Contributions of Space Geodesy to Geodynamics written by David E. Smith and published by American Geophysical Union. This book was released on 1993-01-11 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published by the American Geophysical Union as part of the Geodynamics Series, Volume 23. There are times in the history of a science when the evolving technology has been combined with a singleness of purpose to make possible the next great step. For space geodesy the decade of the 1980s was one of those times. Initiated in the early 1980s, the NASA Crustal Dynamics Project (CDP), a global venture of unprecedented proportions, exploited new technologies to confirm and refine tectonic theories and to advance geodynamics.
