Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Not a reference tool, this unique work is a teaching-learning guide to studying the earliest Gospel. The focus is on showing how rather than on telling what. "Maps" followed by leading questions and statements help both faculty and students to see how the Evangelist adopted and adapted his sacred texts (as well as Jewish and Greco-Roman resources) in light of his convictions about and experience of Jesus. Noticing the dominance of words and themes leads one to discover the primary concerns of the Author and his readers. Observing how St. Mark internally arranged his materials provides a clue as to the kind of work it is and how it was meant to function.

A two-fold strategy was used to accomplish this purpose: (1) Prophetic inspiration from the Word of God was expounded in order to answer the question of why we should cultivate a gospel conversational culture, and (2) practical insights on how to cultivate such a culture was espoused. The Gospel Conversational Church was written for the local church and to the local church. The book is written in such a way where pastors and leaders can use it as a training tool. Yet, small groups can use it as a way to study a local church’s responsibility to fulfill the Great Commission.

Book excerpt: Lesslie Newbigin’s concept of the congregation as hermeneutic of the gospel has been used for over thirty years to discuss the overlap of mission and ecclesiology. This book provides the contextual background to the congregation as hermeneutic of the gospel, then discusses the important components of this concept and how they connect with Newbigin’s lifetime of writings on the nature and identity of the church. Within this discussion, there are three key elements to Newbigin’s ecclesiology as it pertains to the congregation as hermeneutic of the gospel: the relationship between the Holy Spirit and the local congregation, the kingdom of God and the local congregation, and the local congregation within itself. These three components can be found throughout Newbigin’s discussions about the nature of the church ranging from the 1940s until the 1990s. Pulling all these components together and showing how they shed light on Newbigin’s intended meaning by calling the local congregation the hermeneutic of the gospel for their society provides a new interpretation of this concept that will both strengthen and challenge contemporary uses of this concept within the church today.

The kingdom of God, however, requires both sowing and reaping. If we neglect reaping, we will not have a healthy harvest. Jesus at the Door offers a unique tool--an Equipping Card to use with anyone you know, anywhere--and practical, step-by-step instructions, helping readers witness to friends, family, even strangers on the street. This tried-and-tested method is framed around nine points and a picture, and takes about two minutes from introduction to salvation.

Book excerpt: THE UNHEALTHY CHURCH CULTURE Many believers are distraught concerning what they witness going on in their local Black churches today. Ezekiel experienced similar conditions in Israel in his day. The Scripture says, the Israelites were still living in sin and trusting in their own righteousness. God told Ezekiel, “And they come to you as people come, and they sit before you as my people, and they hear what you say, but they will not do it, for with lustful talk in their mouths they act; their heart is set on gain. And behold, you are to them like one who sings lustful songs with a beautiful voice plays well on an instrument, for they hear what you say, but they will not do it.” (Ezekiel 33:31-32 ESV). The exiles had claimed to go to the prophet to receive God’s revelation, but their behavior was not in compliance with their stated beliefs and values. Their true desire was for entertainment – but not for divine enlightenment. If the fall of Jerusalem failed to spiritually awaken them, nothing would. Yet it would open their eyes to the divine truth of Ezekiel’s preaching! As the church, we must call all cultures along with ourselves in every generation to the rule that judges all other rules – the rule of faith, the Holy Bible! Hear what the Spirit is saying to the churches.
