Book Synopsis The Monstrous New Art by : Anna Zayaruznaya
Download or read book The Monstrous New Art written by Anna Zayaruznaya and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2015-04-02 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Late medieval motet texts are brimming with chimeras, centaurs and other strange creatures. In The Monstrous New Art, Anna Zayaruznaya explores the musical ramifications of this menagerie in the works of composers Guillaume de Machaut, Philippe de Vitry, and their contemporaries. Aligning the larger forms of motets with the broad sacred and secular themes of their texts, Zayaruznaya shows how monstrous or hybrid exempla are musically sculpted by rhythmic and textural means. These divisive musical procedures point to the contradictory aspects not only of explicitly monstrous bodies, but of such apparently unified entities as the body politic, the courtly lady, and the Holy Trinity. Zayaruznaya casts a new light on medieval modes of musical representation, with profound implications for broader disciplinary narratives about the history of text-music relations, the emergence of musical unity, and the ontology of the musical work.
Book Synopsis Sciences and the Self in Medieval Poetry by : James Simpson
Download or read book Sciences and the Self in Medieval Poetry written by James Simpson and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2005-10-13 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examines two great poems of the later medieval period, the Latin philosophical epic, Alan of Lille's Anticlaudianus (1181-3), and John Gower's English poem, the Confessio Amantis (1390-3). James Simpson locates these works in a cultural context dominated by two kinds of literary humanism, in which the concept of self is centered in the intellect and the imagination respectively, and shows the very different modes of thought that lie behind their conceptions of selfhood and education.
Book Synopsis Chaucer, Gower, and the Vernacular Rising by : Lynn Arner
Download or read book Chaucer, Gower, and the Vernacular Rising written by Lynn Arner and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2015-01-14 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chaucer, Gower, and the Vernacular Rising examines the transmission of Greco-Roman and European literature into English during the late fourteenth and early fifteenth centuries, while literacy was burgeoning among men and women from the nonruling classes. This dissemination offered a radically democratizing potential for accessing, interpreting, and deploying learned texts. Focusing primarily on an overlooked sector of Chaucer’s and Gower’s early readership, namely, the upper strata of nonruling urban classes, Lynn Arner argues that Chaucer’s and Gower’s writings engaged in elaborate processes of constructing cultural expertise. These writings helped define gradations of cultural authority, determining who could contribute to the production of legitimate knowledge and granting certain socioeconomic groups political leverage in the wake of the English Rising of 1381. Chaucer, Gower, and the Vernacular Rising simultaneously examines Chaucer’s and Gower’s negotiations—often articulated at the site of gender—over poetics and over the roles that vernacular poetry should play in the late medieval English social formation. This study investigates how Chaucer’s and Gower’s texts positioned poetry to become a powerful participant in processes of social control.
Download or read book Confessio Amantis written by J. Gower and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-02-25 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In writing the Confessio Amantis, John Gower pioneered the use of English as a literary language. Commissioned by King Richard II, it is a compendium of stories held together by a frame narrative in which they serve as examples given to a lover by his confessor. In this volume, which is based on Pauli's 1857 edition, H. S. Bennett has selected some of the most enjoyable passages from the Confessio Amantis. They serve together as an illuminating sample of one of the earliest and most important books in the canon of English literature.
Download or read book The French Balades written by John Gower and published by Medieval Institute Publications. This book was released on 2011-05-01 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gower's imaginative French poetry is now available in a new edition with facing page translation, annotations, and introduction. Gower's Traitie employs the French poetic form of balade, typically used for courtly verses, to avow instead the virtues of loving marriage, characteristic of Gower's signature moralizing. His Cinkante Balades confront the tradition of the French Livre de Cent Balades, by describing the feelings of a young man towards his lady, but eventually offering a praise of love insofar as it is subject to reason and morality. Together the two works offer an excellent introduction to the Anglo-Norman works of Gower and are perfect for classroom use.
