Book Synopsis Contentious Politics, Local Governance and the Self by : Tim Kelsall
Download or read book Contentious Politics, Local Governance and the Self written by Tim Kelsall and published by Nordic Africa Institute. This book was released on 2004 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Governance Agenda is the framework that currently organizes the West’s relations with Africa. The present work is an attempt to see Governance through the lens of a contemporary, local history. The report analyzes three periods of contentious politics at local level in Tanzania and two multi-party elections. It provides a window on mismanagement in local government, it examines the intervention by national and local elites in district conflicts, and it points to the difficulties ordinary people face in holding their leaders to account. The argument of the report is that current approaches to the study of Governance overlook an essential ingredient for its potential success: namely, the sociological conditions in which forms of collective action conducive to improved political accountability become possible at a grassroots level. The analysis aims to show that economic diversification and multiple livelihoods have given rise to a reticular social structure in which individuals find it difficult to combine to hold their leaders to account. People have fragmented identities formed in networks of social relations, which impedes the emergence of strong collective identities appropriate to effective social movements.
Book Synopsis Development and Democratisation in Tanzania by : Samuel S. Mushi
Download or read book Development and Democratisation in Tanzania written by Samuel S. Mushi and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study considers the role of civil society in Tanzania's development and transition to democracy. It analyses the structures and management of civil groups, and their relationships with communities and government, so as to determine the extent to which they represent a force for change. Professor Mushi, widely published political scientist at the University of Dar es Salaam, argues that capactity is still limited due to a lack of resources, trained personnel and management capacity. Moreover, civil society is hampered by a lack of autonomy because the state, although withdrawing from being sole service-provider in Tanzania, still holds sway over civil groups.

This book was released on 2014-01-16 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since gaining independence, the United Republic of Tanzania has enjoyed relative stability. More recently, the nation transitioned peacefully from "single-party democracy" and socialism to a multiparty political system with a market-based economy. But Tanzania's development strategies—based on the leading economic ideas at the time of independence—also opened the door for unscrupulous dealmaking among political elites and led to economic decline in the 1960s and 1970s that continues to be felt today. Indeed, the shift to a market-oriented economy was motivated in part by the fiscal interests of government profiteers. The Political Economy of Tanzania focuses on the nation's economic development from 1961 to the present, considering the global and domestic factors that have shaped Tanzania's economic policies over time. Michael F. Lofchie presents a compelling analysis of the successes and failures of a country whose postcolonial history has been deeply influenced by high-ranking members of the political elite who have used their power to advance their own economic interests. The Political Economy of Tanzania offers crucial lessons for scholars and policy makers with a stake in Africa's future.
