Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The American institution of Academic Boards of Trustees is examined, with attention to their operation and conduct; their importance to the effective functioning of American higher education; whether their roles are subject to erosion over time; and their relationship to the college presidency. The analysis is based partially on interviews conducted in previous Association of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges (AGB) studies on the college presidency, and returned survey responses (N=1,400) on board operations from board chairs, presidents and heads of campus faculty organizations who were serving in 1987. The monograph covers various aspects of the operations of the boards of trustees, including their functions, their historical development, and trends. A number of evaluations are made, major problem areas are identified (such as drawing the line between what the board does and what the president and other administrators do) and 22 recommendations are advanced. The appendixes include the following items: (1) a list of participants; (2) the questionnaire itself; (3) various documentation, including reports relating to the board of trustees; and (4) a 12-page annotated bibliography. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There has never been so much pressure on nonprofit boards of directors to achieve a level of accountability that meets public and stakeholder expectations. Member-serving association boards may be especially challenged by their more complex affiliate structures and a greater emphasis on representative governance. But what does the journey to good governance look like? Markedly different from existing board development books, this modern approach focuses less on the behaviors and qualities of "high-performing boards" and more on the stages and processes that directors and their staff used to transform their boards. Based on research funded by the ASAE Foundation, the book fills a gap in the governance literature by emphasizing diagnosis and problem solving, using the actual tools and activities implemented by 85 transformed associations. Combining the credibility of scholarly research with lively and compelling stories, tools, and teachable moments, this book is designed to help associations and other nonprofit organizations achieve the entire journey to good governance, from first to last steps.

Book excerpt: This book identifies factors, structures, and procedures contributing to effective statewide coordination and governance of public colleges and universities. The heart of the book consists of descriptions of representative structures in 4 states, where interviews were conducted with 114 individuals--legislators, gubernatorial staff, system heads, coordinating board chief executives and senior staff members, governing board and coordinating board members, public college and university presidents, faculty members, news media representatives and business executives. Part I of the book offers an overview of statewide governance issues including how coordination and governance differ, a summary of the rationales offered for the trend toward centralization, a discussion of the two major types of systems, an investigation of the issues of institutional autonomy, and a report on the college and university presidency in the various structures under review. Part II offers descriptions of representative structures, in the four states visited, namely Ohio, Tennessee, Maine, and Pennsylvania, with analysis of what makes them effective in the eyes of their numerous constituents. Part III examines state perspectives on public higher education coordinating and governance structures, especially issues of quality and accountability. Part IV concludes with observations and recommendations. Appendixes contain information in 50 state structures, a list of those interviewed for the study, and 39 references. (JB)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Public concern over sharp increases in undergraduate tuition has led many to question why colleges and universities cannot behave more like businesses and cut their costs to hold tuition down. Ronald G. Ehrenberg and his coauthors assert that understanding how academic institutions are governed provides part of the answer. Factors that influence the governance of academic institutions include how states regulate higher education and govern their public institutions; the size and method of selection of boards of trustees; the roles of trustees, administrators, and faculty in shared governance at campuses; how universities are organized for fiscal and academic purposes; the presence or absence of collective bargaining for faculty, staff, and graduate student assistants; pressures from government regulations, donors, insurance carriers, athletic conferences, and accreditation agencies; and competition from for-profit providers. Governing Academia, which covers all these aspects of governance, is enlightening and accessible for anyone interested in higher education. The authors are leading academic administrators and scholars from a wide range of fields including economics, education, law, political science, and public policy.
