Book Synopsis Governance of Cons Passion by : A. Hunt
Download or read book Governance of Cons Passion written by A. Hunt and published by Springer. This book was released on 1996-10-01 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the sumptuary laws that regulated conspicuous consumption in respect to dress, ornaments, and food that were widespread in late medieval and early modern Europe. It argues that sumptuary laws were attempts to stabilize social recognizability in the urban `world of strangers' and in the governance of cities. The gendered character of sumptuary laws are viewed as components of 'gender wars'. These laws are explored as projects directed at the reform of popular culture and in their links to the governance of vagrancy and of popular recreation. This study challenges the view that the sumptuary actually died and develops an argument that in the modern world the regulation of consumption persists, but becomes dispersed throughout a range of both public and private forms of governance. The conclusions stresses the persistence of projects of governance of personal appearance and of private consumption.

Book Synopsis The Trouble with Passion by : Cheryl Ann Hall
Download or read book The Trouble with Passion written by Cheryl Ann Hall and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2005 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Political theorists have long argued that passion has no place in the political realm where reason reigns supreme. But, is this dichotomy between reason and passion sustainable? Does it underestimate the indispensable role of passion in a fully democratic society? Drawing upon Plato, Rousseau, and contemporary feminist theorists, Cheryl Hall argues that passion is an essential component of a just political community and that the need to educate passion together with reason is paramount. Trouble with Passion provides a compelling defense of the crucial place of passion in politics.

Book Synopsis Arts Governance by : Ruth Rentschler
Download or read book Arts Governance written by Ruth Rentschler and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-10-10 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the crisis in governance which led to a shortage of capable board members, recent years have seen the emergence of the enterprising arts organisation – a development which has led to the need for new types of board members who have a greater understanding of 'mission, money and merit' within a cultural construct. This innovative book explores the world of the arts board member from the unique perspective of the cultural and creative industries. Using a wide range of research techniques including interviews with board members and stakeholders, board observations and case studies this book provides a rich and deep analysis from inside the boardroom. It provides in-depth insight into the changing pressures on arts boards after the financial crisis, and focuses uniquely on the role of passion on arts boards. Part of the Routledge Research in Creative and Cultural Industries Management series, written specifically for people seeking to develop their careers in cultural and creative management, this book is also for people working in and with arts organisations, in government and non-profit arts organisations. It will also be of interest to academics and researchers working in the wider corporate governance field.

Download or read book Passions and Constraint written by Stephen Holmes and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1995-06 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Holmes argues that the aspirations of liberal democracy - including individual liberty, the equal dignity of citizens, and a tolerance for diversity - are best understood in relation to two central themes of classical liberal theory: the psychological motivations of individuals and the necessary constraints on individual passions provided by robust institutions. Paradoxically, Holmes argues, such institutional restraints serve to enable, rather than limit or dilute, effective democracy.
