The central premise of this dissertation is to understand the links between cultural and institutional logics and changes in fields of social activity. Specifically, how shifts in resources, meaning systems, and conflict accumulate into consequences for a field and its component actors and organizations. I review arguments on organizational fields and institutional logics, then develop a conceptual framework to analyze the dynamics of institutional logics (i.e. emergence and erosion processes). An extensive historical narrative of the U.S. health care field provides empirical evidence for this framework that supports existing organizational literature on field structuration processes, the presence of institutional logics (and their aspects), and how logics change in coherency (effect) over time. Definitive time periods are identified that substantiate changes in the coherency of logics, reflected in the contestedness between interests, identities, and organizational actors within the field. This framework and qualitative evidence on field-level changes motivates claims about the effects of varying institutional logics on field activity (e.g. organizational dynamics such as foundings and dissolutions) that are formally delineated in propositions and tested within the community of health care governance associations. Credence is given to the importance of combining both institutional and resource perspectives when modeling founding rates for this community. The rate of governance associations was positively affected by the growth of the larger health care field in they emerged and operated and significantly affected by contention and conflict in institutional logics of the field. Partial support for traditional population and resource effects implies the need for more exploration of these kinds of non-market organizations and communities. Overall, this dissertation gives attention to the community and field level of analysis, supports the coevolution of institutional and organizations, and provides linkages between ecological and professionalization processes. Findings support the significance of cultural and institutional conflict as a motivator and clarification of change within a field.
