Book excerpt: The health care system in Canada is much-discussed in the international sphere, but often overlooked when it comes to its highly decentralized administration and regulation. Health Systems in Transition: Canada provides an objective description and analysis of the public, private, and mixed components that make up health care in Canada today including the federal, provincial, intergovernmental and regional dynamics within the public system. Gregory P. Marchildon’s study offers a statistical and visual description of the many facets of Canadian health care financing, administration, and service delivery, along with relevant comparisons to five other countries’ systems. This second edition includes a major update on health data and institutions, a new appendix of federal laws concerning select provincial and territorial Medicare legislation, and, for the first time, a comprehensive and searchable index. It also provides a more complete assessment of the Canadian health system based on financial protection, efficiency, equity, user experience, quality of care, and health outcomes. Balancing careful assessment, summary, and illustration, Health Systems in Transition: Canada is a thorough and illuminating look at one of the nation's most complex public policies and associated institutions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Second in a series of publications from the Institute of Medicine's Quality of Health Care in America project Today's health care providers have more research findings and more technology available to them than ever before. Yet recent reports have raised serious doubts about the quality of health care in America. Crossing the Quality Chasm makes an urgent call for fundamental change to close the quality gap. This book recommends a sweeping redesign of the American health care system and provides overarching principles for specific direction for policymakers, health care leaders, clinicians, regulators, purchasers, and others. In this comprehensive volume the committee offers: A set of performance expectations for the 21st century health care system. A set of 10 new rules to guide patient-clinician relationships. A suggested organizing framework to better align the incentives inherent in payment and accountability with improvements in quality. Key steps to promote evidence-based practice and strengthen clinical information systems. Analyzing health care organizations as complex systems, Crossing the Quality Chasm also documents the causes of the quality gap, identifies current practices that impede quality care, and explores how systems approaches can be used to implement change.

Book Synopsis E-Government in Canada by : Jeffrey Roy
Download or read book E-Government in Canada written by Jeffrey Roy and published by University of Ottawa Press. This book was released on 2006-05-01 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rapid expansion of the Internet has fueled the emergence of electronic government at all levels in Canada. E-government's first decade featured online service underpinned by a technically secure infrastructure. This service-security nexus entails internal governance reforms aimed at realizing more customer-centric delivery via integration and coordination across departments and agencies. Yet, as online networking has become more pervasive and public demands for participation rise, pressures for greater openness and accountability intensify. The result is widening experimentation with online democracy. The e-governance focus is thus shifting toward issues of transparency and trust - and new possibilities for re-conceptualizing how power is organized and deployed. In sum, the prospects for digital transformation involve the interplay of these four dimensions: service, security, transparency and trust. This book identifies the main drivers of e-government, assesses the responses of Canada's public sector to date, and sketches out the major challenges and choices that lie ahead. The findings will be of interest to those studying or working in the world of public sector management and e-governance.

The complex outcomes of the reforms included changes in the quality, efficiency and costs of care growing managerial and political control over physicians and other health care professionals increased influence and centrality of community-based care Diffusion of ideas and practices from business management into health care. Implementing Change in Health Systems sheds new light on crucial policy issues that are currently being debated in the United States and many other countries. Book Synopsis Connecting the Dots by : The Expert Panel on Health Data Sharing
Download or read book Connecting the Dots written by The Expert Panel on Health Data Sharing and published by Council of Canadian Academies. This book was released on 2023-10-19 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Canada’s health systems generate and collect a wealth of data but efforts to effectively share those data across provincial, territorial, and regional borders have been largely unsuccessful. If the capacity to share data is scaled up and facilitated nationally, the potential benefits are substantial: it could improve the quality of healthcare, make healthcare delivery more efficient and cost effective, advance health research and innovation, and improve lives. Although there are risks to enhanced health data sharing, including potential breaches of privacy and cybersecurity, increased stigmatization and bias, a widening of the digital divide, unintended secondary uses of health data, and additional burdens for health professionals, these can be mitigated through careful implementation. At the same time, in the absence of greater health data sharing, negative impacts will deepen, affecting health systems management, hindering public health monitoring and interventions, exacerbating existing health inequalities, and limiting opportunities for new research and innovation. With appropriate insight and information, Canada can modernize its current approach to health data sharing while continuing to protect the privacy of personal health information for those living in Canada. Thoughtful implementation that builds trust and prioritizes transparency will be essential. Connecting the Dots examines the opportunities for maximizing health data sharing in Canada. It focuses on both the benefits and risks associated with increasing that exchange, the legal and regulatory considerations related to health data governance, and the opportunities to implement solutions that facilitate health data sharing across organizations, provinces/territories, and the country while protecting patient privacy.
