Book Synopsis The Earth, the Temple, and the Gods by : Vincent Scully
Download or read book The Earth, the Temple, and the Gods written by Vincent Scully and published by Trinity University Press. This book was released on 2013-10-10 with total page 720 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When The Earth, the Temple, and the Gods first appeared in 1962, it was hailed by the critics for it erudition, historical imagination and boldness. Subsequently, this comprehensive study of Greek temples and site-planning has been widely accepted as a landmark of architectural history, for it offers an inspired and arresting insight into nature and function of Greek sacred architecture. Vincent Scully, one of America's most brilliant and articulate scholars, understands the temples as physical embodiment of the gods in landscapes that had for the Greeks divine attributes and sacred connotations. He explores the meanings inherent in the calculated interaction between man-made sculptural forces and the natural landscape, and he relates this interaction to our understanding of Greek culture from the pre-Greek Aegean to the Hellenistic period. Years of research and travel were devoted to The Earth, the Temple, and the Gods. Scores of sites were restudied on the spot, including many lesser-known sanctuaries throughout the Hellenic world. The study includes reconstruction drawings, plans, and maps along with its richly illustrated, detailed discussions of major sites.
Book Synopsis Cretan Bronze Age Pithoi by : Kostandinos S. Christakis
Download or read book Cretan Bronze Age Pithoi written by Kostandinos S. Christakis and published by INSTAP Academic Press. This book was released on 2005-12-31 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The pithos is one of the most distinctive utilitarian forms of the Cretan Bronze Age ceramic repertoire. Because of its use as a storage container, a pithos is the foremost parameter for the evaluation of the economic organization of palatial and domestic sectors of Cretan Bronze Age society. The pithoi as pottery and their significance for the understanding of the Cretan Bronze Age economy has been the focus of a research project carried out from 1989 to 1999. This book is not a pithos handbook in the narrow sense, although the study offers a typological division of the data with comments on chronology and spatial distribution. It integrates stylistic considerations with broad fabric and technological observations in order to understand the production and consumption of pithoi.

Download or read book Mochlos IIB written by R. Angus K. Smith and published by INSTAP Academic Press. This book was released on 2010-12-31 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excavations carried out at two Late Minoan III sites at Mochlos in eastern Crete yielded a pottery assemblage from 31 tombs and 11 houses, which are cataloged, discussed, and illustrated together with petrographic analyses. The cemetery remains mirror the settlement remains, and the conclusions discuss how the two sites reflect each other. Rarely in Crete are a settlement and its cemetery both preserved, and it is extremely fortunate to be able to document both in a series of scientific excavation reports (Mochlos vols. IIA-IIC).
