Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Swiss theologian Adolf Keller was the leading ecumenist on the European continent between the two world wars. In this book the historian Marianne Jehle-Wildberger delineates his life and its achievements. Based on research in forty archives in Europe and the United States, a picture emerges that shows a wonderful man who was a personal friend oft Karl Barth, C. G. Jung, Thomas Mann, and Albert Schweitzer--and thus who was influenced by the spiritual tendencies of the twentieth century. Keller cooperated closely with the National Council of Churches. His Central Bureau of Relief in Geneva (Inter-Church Aid) was supported by American churches. His lectures at Princeton Theological Seminary on "Religion and Revolution" (1933)--in which he was one of the first commentators to denounce National Socialism in Germany--set a new standard of political discussion and are unsurpassed. Marianne Jehle-Wildbergers' book is an important contribution to twentieth-century church history and to the history of the twentieth century in general.

This book was released on 2007-06-30 with total page 607 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study describes the origins of early Reformed confessional development using the example of those congregations of religious refugees most heavily influenced by John Laski: the congregation at Emden and the Dutch and French Strangers’ Churches in London. At its center are questions about the congregation as the location of ecclesiology. The outlines of Laski’s theology--which viewed the congregation as the communion of the body of Christ--are described in comparison to the approaches of other Reformers and in relationship to daily reality in the second half of the sixteenth century. Working from a rich base of source materials, the author discusses the development of teachings on church offices and the practice of church discipline, thus illuminating the self-understanding of the three congregations. Becker shows how reciprocal influences and attempts to conform led to the unification of doctrine and community life within these congregations.

Book excerpt: This is the first large scale study on the link between the concepts of intellect and grace in the writings of St. Augustine of Hippo. Its five chapters deal with Augustine's writings on grace as they focus on questions concerning epistemology and hermeneutics. Already non-Christian ancient philosophers identified intellectual perfection with salvation as caused by divine grace. Under their influence (I) Augustine developed also his biblical thought (II). The culmination of his concept of intellectus gratiae, however, came in the later works on sacraments (III), hermeneutics (IV) and against Pelagius and Julian of Eclanum (V). This study highlights that development and recommends the concept of intellectus gratiae as a possible key to Augustine's theological thought as a whole.

Book excerpt: The papers of the volume investigate how authoritative figures in the Second Temple Period and beyond contributed to forming the Scriptures of Judaism, as well as how these Scriptures shaped ideal figures as authoritative in Early Judaism. The topic of the volume thus reflects Ben Wright’s research, who—especially with his work on Ben Sira, on the Letter of Aristeas, and on various problems of authority in Early Jewish texts—creatively contributed to the study of the formation of Scriptures, and to the understanding of the figures behind these texts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The theme of this Festschrift dedicated to Heiko Oberman is Augustine reception in theology (1300-1650). Contemporary discussions about an Augustinian school prior to Luther and about Luther's possible relation to such have been intensified by the work of Heiko Oberman. Thirteen invited scholars produced new work. William Courtenay wrote on late medieval discussions of psychic states and human motivations and volitions; Christoph Burger on Hugolin of Orvieto; Tarald Rasmussen on Jacob Perez of Valencia; Manfred Schulze on Johannes von Staupitz; Bernard Hamm on Jerome reception in Nuremberg; Scott Hendrix on Luther's loyalties; Kurt-Victor Selge on Luther's ecclesiology; M.A. Screech on Augustine reception in Rabelais; David Steinmetz on Rom. 7; Arthur Olsen on Martin Chemnitz; James Tanis on Abraham van der Heyden; Suse Rau and Elsie Vezey compiled the Heiko Augustine Oberman Bibliography. Essays are published in their original English or German; English summaries are provided for the German entries. The general student of the period (1300-1650) should gain an overview of the appropriation of Augustine during that time and Professor Oberman's colleagues should profit from the new research contained herein. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book focuses on the threat to free self-development and the effort to ward off a perceived threat of extinction as well as the development of self-preservation forces. The challenges for ethnic and religious minorities in the 19th–21st centuries are explained and unfolded against the historical background that serves as a frame of reference. The royal privileges granted in medieval Hungary were abolished in the mid-19th century. The German-speaking people’s church (Saxones) in Transylvania founded on this had to reorient itself, although a pioneer region of religious freedom had established itself behind the “Ottoman Curtain”. Since the reception of the Reformation, the “Saxones” had been Protestant. At the end of the 19th century, after the Austro-Hungarian Compromise, this minority realised the concept of cultural Protestantism in its purest form: ethnicity and religion were understood to be congruent. Homogeneity of society was the ideal, and affiliation with the German Empire was intensified. Economy, science, culture, language as well as school and church were understood as a unity; segregation and emigration were frowned upon. This concept fell into crisis due to various developments, including economic ones – especially after the annexation of Romania in 1918. National Socialism was widely adopted, along with anti-Semitism. For exponents of the church leadership, the Confessio Augustana only served as a label. On the one hand, external pressure under communist rule brought about a (only conditionally possible) retraditionalisation, on the other hand, it led to the bleeding out of the congregations due to increased emigration. Free development has only started again since the political upheaval in 1989. The church, which has become small, conveys important impulses and serves as a bridge to ecumenism.

Book excerpt: As environmental destruction begins to seriously affect humans, it has become increasingly relevant to reflect on the essential elements of the Jewish and Christian theologies of creation. The essays in this volume explore key aspects of creation theology, which poses the question of the origin of the world and of man. Creation theology is rooted in the concept of man who owes his existence to God and who is placed in a cosmos which God created as “good”. At the same time, the essays show that even back in antiquity, the creation discussion held high potential for ideological criticism.

Book excerpt: German translation of God's Prophetic Feasts by Jacob Keegstra.

WHAT IS THE GOAL OF YOUR PATH?!” This is the question I have asked of many people; many have been the goals given me in answer. Alas, so few have realised that they were hurrying to no particular goal as they had lost the PATH which leads to the high goal they once hoped to reach:– the PATH TO GOD ! (...) I do not want to ask the question: whether it is ‘necessary’ for earthly man to believe in ‘God’… All those who have lived by this belief have always and everywhere answered in the affirmative! This has long since brought serious discredit on both the question, as well as all answers to it… I want to ask the question how it might be possible for earthly man to claim he believes in GOD ! ? ! (...) Whether you are merely repeating what others before you have said to you concerning ‘God’ and ‘God’s nature’, or whether you disdain these ancient fables and conceive ‘God’ on your own terms, – you are still permanently caught in the spell of the magic circle your arrogant superstition had you draw, even if you feel yourself to be ‘raised’ above all ‘belief’ and spiritually ‘free’ ! – – – I want to free you from these delusions, my friend; I want to show you that it is, nevertheless, possible to ‘believe in God’. – – I want to show that you can believe in a ‘God’ who is not created from my or your narrow delusions, and who can never be touched by ‘proof’ relying on thought for its effectiveness ! – – – (...) (...) Only he who has thus experienced his living God within himself knows with sure knowledge of God, just as he only now knows of himself with sure knowledge ! – – – Yet this high stage is but the precondition for all further development in the spiritual world, even if only few throughout the ages have ever reached or surpassed this stage during their lives on Earth. – – It is a crime to speak of God, even in the most wondrous terms, unless the speaker knows with all certainty that he has reached this stage ! ! – (...) If you ever want to gain experience of your living God within yourself, you must not shun the help of your brothers already living in the spirit. All those shun this help who search the peaks and depths to find God, yet remain tied to their own self-importance which constantly whispers to them: that they have no need of human spiritual help. If you want to encounter reality within yourself, you will have to take heed of what reality has called forth in-to existence ! - THE PATH TO GOD They have never heard the teaching telling them of the duty to use life on this Earth in the way that it becomes a source of continual happiness. (...) But those who would attain happiness must strive alone for their happiness; everything else they would like to achieve must be subordinated to this striving and wisely woven into it. – – (...) No other task can be higher than the duty to attain the purest enduring happiness and to increase this Earth’s happiness within oneself and thereby in others too. – THE BOOK ON HAPPINESS What I have to say is beyond belief and disbelief ! I'm not a prophet who needs "confessors" – nor a fighter, who is looking for "followers" behind him, but only a mediator of spiritual insights about the real home of mankind. My writings shouldn't be "believed" but taken up objectively, to awaken innermost experience. – ABOUT MY WRITINGS Countless people – and in truth not just those whose souls are the most frigid – continually await an immense experience to shake their innermost depths. Since all their longing is incapable of summoning up this experience, they rush restlessly searching from experience to experience, caught up in the delusion that the hoped for experience is bound to be attained, if they could only locate the powerful phenomenon capable of overpowering their souls with its immensity. – SHOWING THE WAY A yearning is passing through the world, – a consuming desire, – and every soul not yet completely hardened and incapable of awakening feels gripped by it. (...) One ‘may’ once again believe in things which cannot been proven by 'experiments’, and one is no longer mocked for recognising that we are surrounded and influenced by the invisible, even if we cannot solve its mystery… The ‘miraculous’ would again become reality; the realm of faith extends its borders. – THE BOOK ON THE LIVING GOD The design of pages, emphases placed on particular words, use of spaces, long hyphens, exclamation marks etc. — included in this English translation enables ‘heart-Readers’ to meditate, to breathe-in while willingly absorbing the text as a ‘spiritual sustenance’. – Sarah Havah Theebaum, historian of ideas, painter, poet. _________________________________________________________________________________ The Standard-translation© into English * Currently the hardcopy/hardcover edition of this book is published on the Amazon sites via the Kindle Direct Publishing - and is now available through all major Amazon country sites (including UK, Canadian and Australian sites).
