Book Synopsis Vernunft, Kontingenz und Gott by : Philipp Stoellger
Download or read book Vernunft, Kontingenz und Gott written by Philipp Stoellger and published by Mohr Siebeck. This book was released on 2000 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: English summary: Contingency confounds reason. If reason tries to reduce contingency, it will come up against its limitations. God on the other hand is more familiar with contingency, since contingency originates with him. If one thinks through the relationship between God and contingency, reason will also discover its contingency. Using modern approaches as examples, the authors of this work investigate the history of this unsolved problem.
Book Synopsis Theologies of Creation in Early Judaism and Ancient Christianity by : Tobias Nicklas
Download or read book Theologies of Creation in Early Judaism and Ancient Christianity written by Tobias Nicklas and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2010-07-30 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As environmental destruction begins to seriously affect humans, it has become increasingly relevant to reflect on the essential elements of the Jewish and Christian theologies of creation. The essays in this volume explore key aspects of creation theology, which poses the question of the origin of the world and of man. Creation theology is rooted in the concept of man who owes his existence to God and who is placed in a cosmos which God created as “good”. At the same time, the essays show that even back in antiquity, the creation discussion held high potential for ideological criticism.

Book Synopsis Exploring the Interior by : Karl S. Guthke
Download or read book Exploring the Interior written by Karl S. Guthke and published by Open Book Publishers. This book was released on 2018-05-24 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this fascinating collection of essays Harvard Emeritus Professor Karl S. Guthke examines the ways in which, for European scholars and writers of the eighteenth and early nineteenth century, world-wide geographical exploration led to an exploration of the self. Guthke explains how in the age of Enlightenment and beyond intellectual developments were fuelled by excitement about what Ulrich Im Hof called "the grand opening-up of the wide world”, especially of the interior of the non-European continents. This outward turn was complemented by a fascination with "the world within” as anthropology and ethnology focused on the humanity of the indigenous populations of far-away lands – an interest in human nature that suggested a way for Europeans to understand themselves, encapsulated in Gauguin’s Tahitian rumination "What are we?” The essays in the first half of the book discuss first- or second-hand, physical or mental encounters with the exotic lands and populations beyond the supposed cradle of civilisation. The works of literature and documents of cultural life featured in these essays bear testimony to the crossing not only of geographical, ethnological, and cultural borders but also of borders of a variety of intellectual activities and interests. The second section examines the growing interest in astronomy and the engagement with imagined worlds in the universe, again with a view to understanding homo sapiens, as compared now to the extra-terrestrials that were confidently assumed to exist. The final group of essays focuses on the exploration of the landscape of what was called "the universe within”; featuring, among a variety of other texts, Schiller’s plays The Maid of Orleans and William Tell, these essays observe and analyse what Erich Heller termed "The Artist’s Journey into the Interior.” This collection, which travels from the interior of continents to the interior of the mind, is itself a set of explorations that revel in the discovery of what was half-hidden in language. Written by a scholar of international repute, it is eye-opening reading for all those with an interest in the literary and cultural history of (and since) the Enlightenment.
Book Synopsis Instructions for the Visitors and the Enchiridion by : Phillip Melanchthon
Download or read book Instructions for the Visitors and the Enchiridion written by Phillip Melanchthon and published by Newcomb Livraria Press. This book was released on 2023-05-09 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is Volume III in the Complete Works of Philipp Melanchthon. This new American English translation of Luther's 1528 "Unterricht der Visitatoren, an die Pfarrherrn im Kurfürstenthum zu Sachsen" or "Instructions for the Visitors of Parish Pastors in Electoral Saxony", followed by his 1522 Enchiridion. Together these make up his core works on the subject of education, earning him the title given by Luther: "Germany's teacher". The original German texts follow the English translation for easy reference and this edition contains a new 2023 Afterword by the Translator. Melanchthon’s 1522 Enchiridion sought to teach theology in the family home as a replacement for the state-run religious institutions. Named after Augustine's Enchiridion, which in turn was named after Epictetus' Enchiridion, Melanchthon sought to provide an ethical foundation for Protestantism, which was in disarray. The rampant Antinomianism which rejected all “legalism” and stated there is no moral code to which Christians should adhere to caused a related problem for the reformation. Knowledge of the Ten Commandments and the Old Testament was key to fixing this problem to Melanchthon, so together with Luther they published extensive educational reforms and school material. The Elector of Saxony saw this sorry state of affairs in Protestant Germany in terms of education, and asked Luther to fix it. Melanchthon took lead, and issued this 1527 Instructions for the Visitors of Parish Pastors in Electoral Saxony, and visited the local churches. A great deal of Melanchthon’s work was in the field of education, leading to his title of "Germany's teacher".

Book Synopsis Jesusüberlieferung und Christologie by : Gerhard Schneider
Download or read book Jesusüberlieferung und Christologie written by Gerhard Schneider and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2014-04-09 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
