Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thoughtful essays to revive dialogue about atheism beyond belief. The Varieties of Atheism reveals the diverse nonreligious experiences obscured by the combative intellectualism of Sam Harris, Richard Dawkins, and Christopher Hitchens. In fact, contributors contend that narrowly defining atheism as the belief that there is no god misunderstands religious and nonreligious persons altogether. The essays show that, just as religion exceeds doctrine, atheism also encompasses every dimension of human life: from imagination and feeling to community and ethics. Contributors offer new, expansive perspectives on atheism’s diverse history and possible futures. By recovering lines of affinity and tension between particular atheists and particular religious traditions, this book paves the way for fruitful conversation between religious and non-religious people in our secular age.

Book excerpt: Eingeordnete Freiheit compares Origen's notion of freedom of choice with the concepts of contemporary philosophers. The first chapter deals with the philosophical problem of freedom of choice throughout the history of Greek philosophy. In the second chapter Origen's writing on this topic is assembled, translated, analyzed and commented upon. The comparison between Origen and his contemporaries leads in chapter three to the conclusion that Origen's concept of freedom differs especially from the philosophical perspective, since human freedom does not stand in opposition to the inevitable pattern of the pronoia or heimarmene but to Gods care for every individual. Chapter four shows that the notion of oikonomia in Christian theology is based on the concept of providence in Origen.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new 2022 translation into American English of Philipp Melanchthon's 1530 Augsburg Confession (Confessio Augustana) and his expansive defense of this important Protestant Confession, his "Apologia der Konfession" published soon after. These translations are followed by the original German manuscripts. This is volume IV in The Complete Works of Philipp Melanchthon The Augsburg Confession is one of the founding documents of Protestantism, directly leading to the Edict of Worms and the formal excommunication of Luther and his compatriots. The Confessio Augustana, written by Melanchthon in New Latin and in Early New High German, was composed by Melanchthon on behalf of the entire Wittenberg Reformation as a polemic against not only Emperor Charles V’s Catholicism, but also other Protestant movements, particularly the Anabaptists and the “enemy of the sacraments” (the Zwinglians). Later editions attempted to include the Zwinglian version of Reformed teachings. Zwingli penned his own version at the exact same time, called the Confessio Tetrapolitana. This confession was refuted by the emperor in June of 1530 in the Confutio Augustana, the Augsburg Refutation. Melanchthons’ Apologia Confessionis Augustanae was in answer to this document, which Melanchthon completed in 1531. The Roman church agreed with the bulk of the articles (Articles 1-3, 5, 8-14, 16-18 and 20), pointing out that the Wittenberg Reformation was deliberately misrepresenting Catholic teachings. Still, the Confutatio condemned the simplistic dichotomy of Faith and Works, and argued that is was based on an over-emphasis on Paul's letters excluding books such as the Book of James, which Martin Luther believed was "inspired by the Devil". This confession was critical for the Religious Wars of the 16th and 17th centuries. The military alliance of the Protestants, the Schmalkaldic League, made the Confessio Augustana the basis of its confederation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book features many of the leading voices championing the revival of Neo-Aristotelian Ethical Naturalism (AN) in contemporary philosophy. It addresses the whole range of issues facing this research program at present. Coverage in the collection identifies differentiations, details standpoints, and points out new perspectives. This volume answers a need: AN is quite new to contemporary philosophy, despite its deep roots in the history of philosophy. As yet, there are many unanswered questions regarding its relation to contemporary views in metaethics. It is certainly not equivalent to dominant naturalistic approaches to metaethics in Anglophone philosophy. Indeed, it is not obviously incompatible with some approaches identified as nonnaturalistic. Further, there are controversies regarding the views of the first wave of virtue revivalists. The work of G.E.M. Anscombe and Philippa Foot is frequently misunderstood, despite the fact that they are important figures in the contemporary revival. This volume details a robust approach to ethics by situating it within the context of human life. It will help readers to better understand how AN raises deep questions about the relation of action and its evaluation to human nature. Neo-Aristotelians argue that something like the traditional cardinal virtues, practical wisdom, temperance, justice and courage, are qualities that perfect human reason and desire.
