Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the vein of The Boy in the Striped Pajamas and Number the Stars, this fusion of fairy tales, folklore, and World War II history eloquently illustrates the power of love and the inherent will to survive even in the darkest of times. In the land of dolls, there is magic. In the land of humans, there is war. Everywhere there is pain. But together there is hope. Karolina is a living doll whose king and queen have been overthrown. But when a strange wind spirits her away from the Land of the Dolls, she finds herself in Kraków, Poland, in the company of the Dollmaker, a man with an unusual power and a marked past. The Dollmaker has learned to keep to himself, but Karolina’s courageous and compassionate manner lead him to smile and to even befriend a violin-playing father and his daughter—that is, once the Dollmaker gets over the shock of realizing a doll is speaking to him. But their newfound happiness is dashed when Nazi soldiers descend upon Poland. Karolina and the Dollmaker quickly realize that their Jewish friends are in grave danger, and they are determined to help save them, no matter what the risks.
Download or read book Maria Czaplicka written by Grażyna Kubica and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2020-11 with total page 790 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This biography of the Polish British anthropologist Maria Czaplicka (1884-1921) is also a cultural study of the dynamics of the anthropological collective presented from a researcher-centric perspective. Czaplicka, together with Bronisław Malinowski, studied anthropology in London and later at Oxford, then she headed the Yenisei Expedition to Siberia (1914-15) and was the first female lecturer of anthropology at Oxford. She was an engaged feminist and an expert on political issues in Northern Asia and Eastern Europe. But this remarkable woman's career was cut short by suicide. Like many women anthropologists of the time, Czaplicka journeyed through various academic institutions, and her legacy has been dispersed and her field materials lost. Grażyna Kubica covers the major events in Czaplicka's life and provides contextual knowledge about the intellectual formation in which Czaplicka grew up, including the Warsaw radical intelligentsia and the contemporary anthropology of which she became a part. Kubica also presents a critical analysis of Czaplicka's scientific and literary works, related to the issues of gender, shamanism, and race. Kubica shows how Czaplicka's sense of agency and subjectivity enriched and shaped the practice of anthropology and sheds light on how scientific knowledge arises and is produced.
Book Synopsis Running Naked Through the Streets by : Caramine White
Download or read book Running Naked Through the Streets written by Caramine White and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 2008-12-24 with total page 131 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Running Naked Through the Streets is an account of the year Dr. Caramine White lived in the former Communist country Slovakia, from August 2004 - May 2005. When Dr. White received a Fulbright Scholarship, she and an American literature professor from a Slovak university 'exchanged' jobs. Dr. White lived in Banska Bystrica, a city of about 84,000 in central Slovakia. Although her students spoke English, very few of the townspeople did, and the living conditions were much different from those enjoyed in America. Running Naked Through the Streets, which refers to the utter helplessness and vulnerability she often felt, is neither an autobiography nor a travel book. Although Dr. White does include some interesting information for tourists, the crux of the book is how being so alone and dependent can encourage and even accelerate personal growth. It is told with a great deal of humor and honesty. Interwoven throughout the text are humorous essays recounting some of her bizarre adventures during the year, which range from belly dancing to marathon running, from inadvertently taking part in a Polish Confirmation ceremony to becoming the object of affection for a mentally challenged homeless man.

Download or read book Girl written by Alona Frankel and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2016-08-29 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “An impressionistic memoir of a Polish Jewish girl’s survival hiding as a Gentile in Nazi-occupied Poland . . . truly moving and bravely rendered.” —Kirkus Reviews, starred review Alona Frankel was just two years old when Germany invaded Poland. After a Polish carpenter agreed to hide her parents but not her, Alona’s parents desperately handed her over to a greedy woman who agreed to hide her only as long as they continued to send money. Isolated from her parents and living among pigs, horses, mice, and lice, Alona taught herself to read and drew on scraps of paper. The woman would send these drawings to Alona’s parents as proof that Alona was still alive. In time, the money ran out and Alona was tossed into her parents’ hiding place, at this point barely recognizing them. After Poland’s liberation, Alona’s mother was admitted to a terminal hospital and Alona handed over to a wealthy, arrogant family of Jewish survivors who eventually cast her off to an orphanage. Despite these daily horrors and dangers surrounding her, Alona’s imagination could not be restrained. Faithful to the perspective of the heroine herself, Frankel, now a world-renowned children’s author and illustrator, reveals a little girl full of life in a terrible, evil world. “A wonderful contribution to the canon of Holocaust literature—the story of a hidden child that is told with indelible images and tender words.” —Thane Rosenbaum, author of How Sweet It Is!

Book Synopsis Hope and Hard Truth by : Mary Beth Rogers
Download or read book Hope and Hard Truth written by Mary Beth Rogers and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2022-09-01 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mary Beth Rogers has led an eventful life rooted in the weeds of Texas politics, occasionally savoring a few victories—particularly the 1990 governor’s race when, as campaign manager for Ann Richards, she did the impossible and put a Democratic woman in office. She also learned to absorb her losses—after all, she was a liberal feminist in America’s most aggressively conservative state. Rogers’s road to a political life was complex. Candidly and vulnerably, she shares both public and private memories of how she tried to maintain a rich family life with growing children and a husband with a debilitating illness. She goes on to provide an insider’s account of her experiences as Richards’s first chief of staff while weaving her way through the highs and lows of political intrigue and legislative maneuvering. Reflecting on her family heritage and nascent spiritual quest, Rogers discovers a reality at once sobering and invigorating: nothing is ever completely lost or completely won. It is a constant struggle to create humane public policies built on a foundation of fairness and justice—particularly in her beloved Texas.
Book Synopsis The Polish Boy from London by : George Mula
Download or read book The Polish Boy from London written by George Mula and published by Austin Macauley Publishers. This book was released on 2024-01-05 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early 1990s the communist block collapses and Poland re-emerges on the world stage. An incredibly exciting time of momentous change, including economic shock therapy, creating a highly charged atmosphere often described as the greatest opportunity in the history of capitalism. Like the Wild West, it attracted pioneers seeking to exploit the opportunity and the women who came with it. The book follows the life of an anti-hero born in the displaced Polish community after WW2 and ideally placed to be such a pioneer. In a frank and honest way, it breaks the traditional male code of silence and exposes the behaviour of businessmen travelling abroad. A story of a meteoric rise to success followed by spectacular failure. The author doesn’t hold back on his strong opinion on the treatment of Poland throughout history, his own highly controversial views on political correctness and his clear preferences for the way women present themselves, in keeping with the period.
