Book excerpt: The Good Life was a publication that was sent out on a semi-regular basis to a small group of friends/colleagues/subscribers beginning in November 1993 and concluding in September 2002. This book is a compilation of those issues. The subject material is varied and diverse---the bulk of it is a recounting of real life experiences, both mundane and dramatic, frequently analyzed from sociological, philosophical, psychological and humanistic perspectives. It also includes commentary on sociological issues, as well as topical commentary on the events of the day: the O.J. Simpson trial, the death of Princess Diana, and September 11, 2001. Sports topics of the day are discussed, and a smattering of poetry is also included, as well as reader commentary. It is an open-minded and multi-faceted book unlike any other you have read or will read.

Marvel at an anticrime crusader, a space skydiver, and a snake-venom enthusiast. These and other stars—many of whom rarely give such extensive interviews—talk family and work, joys and worries, failures and triumphs, dislikes and desires. Book excerpt: “If a judgment were ever rendered on all the multi-million words I have spoken into microphones, I hope something like this could be said: ‘He [Huntley] had a great respect, almost an awe, of the medium in which he worked. He regarded it as a privilege, not a license.... Perhaps the best I might hope is that by some accident of voice tone or arrangement of words I did, on a few occasions, excite, exhort, annoy or provoke a few of my fellow human beings to think with their heads, not the viscera’”—Chet Huntley. This biography of NBC newsman Chet Huntley, who, along with David Brinkley, anchored NBC’s “Huntley-Brinkley Report,” covers his youth on a farm in Montana, his education and his graduation from the University of Washington, his development as a radio personality and news reporter for stations in Seattle, Spokane, Portland, and his work for CBS, ABC and NBC radio and television in Los Angeles from 1939 to 1955. It also details his move to New York and his work on the “Huntley-Brinkley Report” from 1956 to 1970, his retirement from the news business, his supervision of the development of the Big Sky Ski resort in Montana, and his death from cancer in 1974 at the age of 62.

Th e first one, a gynecologist, keeps her waiting for 3 months before he does a D & C, and by way of a biopsy, finds out she has cervical cancer. At first he is going to do a radical hysterectomy, changes his mind, and dumps her on a radiologist with a non-existent Stage IC diagnosis report. The radiologist, not knowing his Merck Manual too well, convinces her that radiology is as effective as a hysterectomy operation for any Stage I cervical cancer. A year later, the cancer had metastasized. She receives chemotherapy and becomes very religious. The tumors disappear and she believes she is healed. However, three months later her health deteriorates, again. The husband and Dolores meet a lady cured of lung cancer by a strict metabolic diet and Laetrile pills. This happens while he is on a 3 month tour of duty assignment at Fort Hood, Texas as a civilian engineer for the US Army Tank-Automotive Command. On her advice and a talk with the doctor in Mexico they take a chance to cure Dolores with a trip to Clinica Cydel in Tijuana. After a few days of Laetrile treatment, but inability to hold down food, Dolores collapses and she is hospitalized at Dr. Contreras Hospital del Mar. She is put on a plane from San Diego to Detroit 3 weeks later, but rapidly breaks down in health. Her last day out, she attends a faithful Christian service conducted by evangelist Nora Lam. Dolores expires 4 months later.

Book excerpt: The Book of the Seven Delights was called “a treasure” (Booklist, starred review). Now, the New York Times bestselling author presents the much-anticipated second novel in her Victorian-set romantic adventure series. Cordelia Blackburn has struck a deal with her crusty tycoon of a grandfather to fund an expedition that will make her name as an explorer. But first, he requires she prove herself—by locating three Mayan stone carvings and something known as “the gift of the jaguar.” To make matters worse, he insists on sending someone along to authenticate her findings—his arrogant butler!—and it becomes clear that a powerful and ruthless third party is set on finding the fabled stones and treasure first As the trail leads them across the Caribbean and into Mexico, Cordelia learns that tall, sardonic Hartford Goodnight is far more than just a butler. And Goodnight learns that beautiful, provocative Cordelia is as tough as she is tempting. Soon the pair is hip deep in danger and desire, racing the competition to the prize—and trying to keep the sparks between them from setting the rainforest ablaze. “[Readers] will take immense delight in Betina Krahn’s fabulous late Victorian tale.”—The Best Reviews “[A] lively romp. Look for her trademark wit, her appealing characters, and a delightful dose of the exotic.”—Library Journal
