Book excerpt: The idea of storytelling goes beyond the borders of language, culture, or traditional education, and has historically been a tie that bonds families, communities, and nations. Digital storytelling offers opportunities for authentic academic and non-academic literacy learning across a multitude of genres. It is easily accessible to most members of society and has the potential to transform the boundaries of traditional education. As concepts around traditional literacy education evolve and become more culturally and linguistically relevant and responsive, the connections between digital storytelling and disciplinary literacy warrant considered exploration. Connecting Disciplinary Literacy and Digital Storytelling in K-12 Education develops a conceptual framework around pedagogical connections to digital storytelling within K-12 disciplinary literacy practices. This essential reference book supports student success through the integration of digital storytelling across content areas and grade levels. Covering topics that include immersive storytelling, multiliteracies, social justice, and pedagogical storytelling, it is intended for stakeholders interested in innovative K-12 disciplinary literacy skill development, research, and practices including but not limited to curriculum directors, education faculty, educational researchers, instructional facilitators, literacy professionals, teachers, pre-service teachers, professional development coordinators, teacher preparation programs, and students.

Book excerpt: 'I am insanely in love with George Cross'. Stephen Fry To solve any murder, you must first know your victim . . . THE DETECTIVE DS George Cross has unique and unmatchable talents. He uses a combination of logic, determination and, often, pedantry to get answers where others have failed for families who have long given up hope. So when a ravaged body is found in a local demolition site, it's up to Cross to piece together the truth from whatever fragments he can find. THE VICTIM Cross has little to go on, but from the faint tan lines on the ravaged body, and strange scars on his forearms, an identity gradually emerges: a male amateur cyclist; a reliance on performance-enhancing drugs. But what happened that led to this man's death? How did he end up here? And, most importantly, who is he? THE FAMILY In the face of ever-mounting challenges, including budget cuts and unreliable witnesses, Cross must first work out who the man is to have any chance of solving the murder. But in searching for this man's identity, Cross will come up against a lot that he is unfamiliar with – jealousy, ambition and a family tearing itself apart . . . Perfect for fans of M.W. Book excerpt: Gracen Lowe has a new life theory: What you don’t know can’t hurt you. Which is exactly why he decides not to tell his twin sister, Bella, that he’s accidentally falling for the woman she hates most, the very woman who allegedly cheated with Bella’s last boyfriend and broke them apart. Bella might be his best friend and ultimate confidante, but she’d legit cut off his favorite body part if she knew which woman he’d been craving. So even if his theory’s totally whack, staying quiet will definitely keep him safer. Except he feels so guilty about it all. Meanwhile, Bella’s heating up the sheets with one of Gracen’s best friends, and she can’t seem to reveal that little detail to her brother either, due to—you know—reasons. When the truth is exposed, all bets are off. Shattered secrets will either set everyone free or wreck their relationships forever.

Book excerpt: Do fathers love their children more than the mothers do? Why or why not? Yusuph is Tanzania Congolese boy who born and grow in Tanzania with unaware of his mother's (Tecla) and father's (Joseph) love for him because of some complicated situation. As Yusuph grew up, he longed to live with his family but at the end he received bad news of Joseph's death. "I literally can't remember what was my dad looks like, or his voice, or anything about him but there are still some missing pieces of him deep down inside me that I brought into my countless dreams of him." Father will say they love their children just as much as their Mothers, but it looks different on the outside. He buried him in his mind, and transform almost every aspect of his live, he decided to pursue his new dream of not letting his children go through the life he went through. Yusuph and Samir were selected by the college to study abroad. Father tend to love their children in the way they perceive is the best but mother love their children in the way they can best perceive it. So, from children's perspective, the father's love may seem to be less than the mothers. Samir explore Yusuph's life situation to accomplish writing his own novel. "... He's committed to reading as many novels as he can, hoping that one day he'll find something to write about in his novel, but still, I wish I could tell my life story so he could write something..." THE BEGINNING OF NOVEL WITHIN A NOVEL. Later on Yusuph find out that, before Joseph death, he left special love message for him about his steps sister, Clementine who live in Drc Congo. It is very difficult for Yusuph to go meet his step sister because he want to spend most of his time with his girlfriend (Naomy) for his future family. As time goes by pain of loosing Joseph never leaves Yusuph. "The foot prints our loved ones leave on our souls are permanent. Never to be filled with another. Never forgotten. They live on in our memories and in our hearts." The importance of fatherhood extend beyond a provider. Keep that in mind. Yusuph couldn't deal with the future while he didn't clean all of his past memory. "Now we're all together and we can't shake hands... We can't kiss... Hugging each other is a test for us... Having sex is also a problem.... I don't think if we will get married... Bearing children is a dream..." Mother's love is mild while father's love is shape. They are different but neither is dispensable. Instead to go study abroad, he go to meet Clementine because she is the one who will restore all the love he had for Joseph without care if there a civil war. Yusuph's heart-beat, thump-thump -- His finger is taking up trigger-slack. He holds off as Justine (Rebel) continues to drag Clementine backward into the woods... So yeah, I think fathers love their children, but they way they express it can sometimes be misunderstood or undervalued.

Book excerpt: Children's literature isn't just for children anymore. This original study explores the varied forms and roles of children's literature—when it's written for adults. What do Adam Mansbach's Go the F**k to Sleep and Barbara Park's MA! There's Nothing to Do Here! have in common? These large-format picture books are decidedly intended for parents rather than children. In No Kids Allowed, Michelle Ann Abate examines a constellation of books that form a paradoxical new genre: children's literature for adults. Distinguishing these books from YA and middle-grade fiction that appeals to adult readers, Abate argues that there is something unique about this phenomenon. Principally defined by its form and audience, children's literature, Abate demonstrates, engages with more than mere nostalgia when recast for grown-up readers. Abate examines how board books, coloring books, bedtime stories, and series detective fiction written and published specifically for adults question the boundaries of genre and challenge the assumption that adulthood and childhood are mutually exclusive.
