Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are two ways that a person can walk in this life. You can either walk into your blessing or walk into your curse. How can you do that? You can do that by doing things that are natural for you to do. Success at anything is not by chance or by luck. It is seeing things you have already been doing brought to fruition. Therefore, successful people are not surprised by their success. They actually knew it would happen before it happened. The blessing is the reward for a life of integrity and commitment to achieving goals and setting standards. What is the curse? It is all the negatives that we curse our lives with: the negative friends, the negative conversations, the negative situations. An unsuccessful person who continues to put himself or herself in those situations, in those conversations, and around those people will bring a curse to their lives that they will never be able to shake. I am grateful for the friends and the relationships that I have been blessed with in my life. They have helped me to overcome all the obstacles of life. And that is what any man needs, incarcerated or freepeople who believe in him when no one else in the world does.

Book excerpt: This brilliant, New York Times bestselling novel from the author of the Newbery Medal winner When You Reach Me explores multiple perspectives on the bonds and limits of friendship. Long ago, best friends Bridge, Emily, and Tab made a pact: no fighting. But it’s the start of seventh grade, and everything is changing. Emily’s new curves are attracting attention, and Tab is suddenly a member of the Human Rights Club. And then there’s Bridge. She’s started wearing cat ears and is the only one who’s still tempted to draw funny cartoons on her homework. It’s also the beginning of seventh grade for Sherm Russo. He wonders: what does it mean to fall for a girl—as a friend? By the time Valentine’s Day approaches, the girls have begun to question the bonds—and the limits—of friendship. Can they grow up without growing apart? “Sensitively explores togetherness, aloneness, betrayal and love.” —The New York Times A Boston Globe–Horn Book Honor Book for Fiction Named a Best Book of the Year by The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, The Boston Globe, The Guardian, NPR, and more!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'the greatest short story writer who has ever lived' Raymond Carver's unequivocal verdict on Chekhov's genius has been echoed many times by writers as diverse as Katherine Mansfield, Somerset Maugham, John Cheever and Tobias Wolf. While his popularity as a playwright has sometimes overshadowed his achievements in prose, the importance of Chekhov's stories is now recognized by readers as well as by fellow authors. Their themes - alienation, the absurdity and tragedy of human existence - have as much relevance today as when they were written, and these superb new translations capture their modernist spirit. Elusive and subtle, spare and unadorned, the stories in this selection are among Chekhov's most poignant and lyrical. They include well-known pieces such as 'The Lady with the Little Dog', as well as less familiar work like 'Gusev', inspired by Chekhov's travels in the Far East, and 'Rothschild's Violin', a haunting and darkly humorous tale about death and loss. ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, helpful notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Diptera Downs, and Other Stories is a mixed-genre collection of short stories; all are fiction and untrue but nevertheless speak of truth. Settings and characters are dominated by the Australian outback. A few generic themes plait the stories together: death and dying, love, mateship/friendship, searching, loss, and of course, flies! Watch for other connectors, such as lightning, flamingos, cigarette smoking, music, science, bush life, and bush characters. Meet characters like the Bastard, Second-Hand Sam, Lilly-from-Lilliput, Zzz, Xanthus, Barnardius the circus midget on stilts, Ben-Lee (an Aboriginal spirit boy), the female Brokeback Mountain duo, Ernie the Emu, the erratic Bedouin Jabar, and the serial killer Freddy Fenris. Travel to the Holy Land and Old Jerusalem, to the 2024 Taipei Olympics, to the 1914 gold fields, to the Flamingos Nest, to Diptera Downs, to remote central Australia, and more. The story Virus tells the sometimes-comedic and sometimes-tragic saga of a bush preschool teacher from an Aboriginal community; in The Boy from Arltunga, a boy from one hundred years ago in a remote central Australian gold-mining town meets a 2014 teenager; The Bastard tells of an interview for the 2024 Taipei Olympics between a young Aboriginal female journalist and an Australian kick-boxing champion with family connections to Persian royalty and blues music. And therere always the persistent and pesky flies!

He has an ear -- for festival rhythms and regional accents, bedtime stories and cautionary tales. He has a heart -- for the pull of tradition and the call of the road, for bright-eyed Greek beauties and unresponsive ladies of the night, for boys becoming men, and writers scraping by Most of all, Joseph Sutton has a voice that emerges strong and true in this remarkable collection of stories.

Book excerpt: Writing not long ago to my oldest literary friend, I expressed in a moment of heedless sentiment the wish that we might have again one of our talks of long-past days, over the purposes and methods of our art. And my friend, wiser than I, as he has always been, replied with this doubting phrase"Could we recapture the zest of that old time?" I would not like to believe that our faith in the value of imaginative art has diminished, that we think it less worth while to struggle for glimpses of truth and for the words which may pass them on to other eyes; or that we can no longer discern the star we tried to follow; but I do fear, with him, that half a lifetime of endeavour has dulled the exuberance which kept one up till morning discussing the ways and means of aesthetic achievement. We have discovered, perhaps with a certain finality, that by no talk can a writer add a cubit to his stature, or change the temperament which moulds and colours the vision of life he sets before the few who will pause to look at it. And so—the rest is silence, and what of work we may still do will be done in that dogged muteness which is the lot of advancing years. Other times, other men and modes, but not other truth. Truth, though essentially relative, like Einstein's theory, will never lose its ever-new and unique quality-perfect proportion; for Truth, to the human consciousness at least, is but that vitally just relation of part to whole which is the very condition of life itself. And the task before the imaginative writer, whether at the end of the last century or all these aeons later, is the presentation of a vision which to eye and ear and mind has the implicit proportions of Truth.
