Book excerpt: Working at the local processing plant, Marcos is in the business of slaughtering humans—though no one calls them that anymore. His wife has left him, his father is sinking into dementia, and Marcos tries not to think too hard about how he makes a living. After all, it happened so quickly. First, it was reported that an infectious virus has made all animal meat poisonous to humans. Then governments initiated the “Transition.” Now, eating human meat—“special meat”—is legal. Marcos tries to stick to numbers, consignments, processing. Then one day he’s given a gift: a live specimen of the finest quality. Though he’s aware that any form of personal contact is forbidden on pain of death, little by little he starts to treat her like a human being. And soon, he becomes tortured by what has been lost—and what might still be saved.

Torn with his father, in 1859-1864 he lived in New Zealand, bred sheep. He became an ardent devotee of Darwinism, his views spelled out in a study of Life and Habit (1877). Returning to England, engaged in literature and painting, lived a hermit. Traveled to Italy and Sicily. He exhibited paintings in the Royal Academy, wrote about Italian art. His prose was highly appreciated by Forster and Shaw, and later by Joyce, Lawrence, Aldous Huxley, Maugham, George Orwell. Extremely frank autobiographical novel "The Way of All Flesh" (The Way of All Flesh) was completed by the author in the 1880s, but at the author's will was not published during his lifetime and was published only in 1903. Six volumes of his notebooks were also published, correspondence. FS Fitzgerald on the back of the title page of this book Butler wrote with his hand: "The most interesting human document of all available".

Book excerpt: They were amazed at his teaching.''; ''They fell down before him.''; ''He touched her hand.''; ''they left their nets.''; Often when we read the New Testament accounts of Jesus' life, we focus on his teachings and stories. But Don Everts draws our attention to the seemingly insignificant ''stage directions'' of the Gospels that describe the activity surrounding him. ''It's significant,'' Everts writes, ''that in the Gospels we don't just have a bullet list of quotes from Jesus.'' We also have observations of what he did and how people responded to him. By examining these simple phrases and casual comments, Everts assembles a startlingly fresh portrait of who Jesus was and is. While no one has seen the invisible God, when we look at the life of Jesus, we discover what his early followers discovered - that Jesus is the very flesh of God. ''Many people find themselves put off by Christianity but haunted and compelled by the figure of Jesus. In God in the Flesh, Don Everts reminds us why.

You find yourself acting the same and yielding to those same old temptations - that didn't seem to change either. So you wonder, Has anything really changed? The correct answer to that question is foundational for receiving from God. If you lack this basic understanding, you'll forever ask yourself doubt-filled questions like: "How could God love somebody like me?" and "How can I possibly expect to receive anything from the Lord? I don't deserve it, I'm not good enough!" Spirit, Soul, and Body will help you eliminate those and other doubt-filled questions that destroy your faith. If you have trouble receiving from God, this is a must-read!

Book excerpt: Christ’s Body, Human Flesh If we’re honest, no one really cares about theology unless it reveals a gut-level view of God’s presence. According to pastor and ministry leader Hugh Halter, only the incarnational power of Jesus satisfies what we truly crave, and once we taste it, we’re never the same. God understands how hard it is to be human, and the incarnation—God with us—enables us to be fully alive. With refreshing, raw candor, Flesh reveals the faith we all long to experience—one based on the power of Christ in the daily grind of work, home, school, and life. For anyone burned out, disenchanted, or seeking a fresh honest-to-God encounter, Flesh will invigorate your faith.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An inside look at sex magic in Eastern and Western Mystery traditions • Details the sex magic practices of P. B. Randolph, Aleister Crowley, Austin Osman Spare, Julius Evola, and Maria de Naglowska • Includes a complete overview of love magic in the Middle Ages, with accounts of the use of potions, powders, spells, and enchantments • Explores sex magic techniques of the East, including Taoist sexual alchemy Magic, almost in its entirety, is connected to sexuality. It is through the natural magic of love that sex magic operates, harnessing the forces that join lovers together. In this extensive study of sex magic in the Eastern and Western Mystery traditions, Sarane Alexandrian explains how there is a sex magic connected with every religion, spiritual belief system, and initiatory society. Exploring sexual practices in folk magic, high magic, alchemy, and religion, the author begins with a complete overview of love magic in the Middle Ages, including accounts of the use of potions, powders, spells, and enchantments, and he reveals how these techniques related to the religious practices of the time. He introduces the Taoist sexual alchemy practices of Mantak Chia, the secret tantric practices of the Tibetan bons, sexual shiatsu, and a Vietnamese practice called “mouth moxa.” Examining the sacred sexuality that arose in Western initiatory orders in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Alexandrian details the development of P. B. Randolph’s white sexual magic and the black sexual magic of Aleister Crowley, as well as explaining the practices of Austin Osman Spare, Julius Evola and the Ur Group, and Maria de Naglowska. He reveals the scientific principles underlying sex magic and how successful results are guaranteed by the influences of the heavenly bodies and the radiant powers of color, number, scents, and physical movements, which intensify the activity of the human bioelectric field. Alexandrian also details the tantra practices of Margot Anand, the sexual rituals of Wicca, and magical “sex aids,” including talismans and jewels. Providing complete practical information, the author explains how, through sex magic, a couple can extract from each other what they are missing by way of virility and femininity, multiplying their energies tenfold and merging the carnal and spiritual worlds to experience transcendent adventures in the deepest depths of reality.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “[A] brilliant and provocative work . . . demonstrating the centrality of the flesh to the mysteries and doctrines of the Christian faith.” —Carol Zaleski, Smith College A sustained and systematic theological reflection on the idea that being a Christian is, first and last, a matter of the flesh, Christian Flesh shows us what being a Christian means for fleshly existence. Depicting and analyzing what the Christian tradition has to say about the flesh of Christians in relation to that of Christ, the book shows that some kinds of fleshly activity conform well to being a Christian, while others are in tension with it. But to lead a Christian life is to be unconstrained by ordinary ethical norms. Arguing that no particular case of fleshly activity is forbidden, Paul J. Griffiths illustrates his message through extended case studies of what it is for Christians to eat, to clothe themselves, and to engage in physical intimacy. “In this trenchant and careful theological treatment of our embodiment, Paul Griffiths puts the stress exactly where it should be put––on the possibility of transfigured touch. By focusing on the varieties of touch, he is able to untangle several unfortunate arguments between liberals and conservatives in a most refreshing way.” —John Milbank, University of Nottingham “Very few theologians can boast a comparable combination of profound questioning and precise reasoning. This is a book worthy of the most serious reflection, debate, and admiration.” —David Bentley Hart, Notre Dame Institute for Advanced Study “Supremely lucid and beautifully austere.” —Evan Sandsmark, Modern Theology “A model of well-reasoned, stimulating and enduring theology.” —R. David Nelson, International Journal of Systematic Theology

Although we can never be sure what that torment was, many of us will know what it feels like to experience a painful problem which does not seem to go away. In this book R. T. Kendall explains what a thorn in the flesh is, why we have it, and what we should understand by it. Looking with compassion at the kinds of acute situation in which we may find ourselves - an unhappy marriage, difficult working conditions, loneliness, sexual misgivings or chronic illness, for example - he shows how the grace of God is sufficient whatever our thorn, and how it can lead us into unimaginable intimacy with Jesus.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With America's confidence in the Bible at an all-time low and the strength of her spiritual convictions waning, it is essential for Christians—especially Christian leaders—to be well-grounded in biblical theology. To have a clear and comprehensive understanding of the key doctrines of evangelicalism. In response, professor and award-winning author Bruce Demarest has made plain God's glorious plan of salvation, his provision for the human dilemma through Christ's work on the cross, and the application of saving grace to unbelievers. Demarest's unique approach defines each topic, identifies its most pressing issues, examines the ways in which the doctrine has been understood historically, and interprets the Bible's revelation. The result is a clear and carefully constructed doctrinal statement that you can defend, live out, and communicate to others. This singular, comprehensive treatment of one of Christianity's essential doctrines gives definitive, Bible-based answers about salvation and the cross— and about related theological issues such as grace and regeneration. It's perfect for clarifying your theology and gaining deep understanding of this foundational theme. Part of the Foundations of Evangelical Theology series.

Book excerpt: Are you living a rich and satisfying life? I sure wasn't. I was alive in the body but not really living as the Lord desired for me. I knew there was so much more, I just didn't know how to get there. There are so many of us who aren't living this satisfying life that the Lord desires for us. It may look to the outside world that we have it all together and have everything we want and need but deep down we are miserable and unsatisfied. Is that you? Do you really want to know why you aren't living that satisfying (abundant) life that Jesus desires for you in John 10:10? Like me, you aren't doing...Jesus replied, "But even more blessed are all who hear the word of God and put it into practice." Luke 11:18 (NLT) You aren't living because you continue to disobey the Lord. I have been called to teach the "not-so-good news" in the Good News so that when you hear the Good News it is really Good News! We do this by self-examination. That means looking at our thoughts, words, and actions and seeing how we are measuring up with the Lords standards. This first book in this series is the most important. In order to be blessed, to have joy in your tribulations, to be at peace with God and others, to live that abundant life on earth, and to be used by God, you must put off a preoccupation of self and start living the basics of Christianity. You must put off your anger, your unforgiveness, your unloving ways, your unsubmissiveness, your fear, worry, depression and your life dominating sins. This is achieved when you understand His focus for our living. "Deny self, carry your cross, and follow Him." Luke 9:23-24.
