Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Introduction: "There is not a successful deer hunter in the world who has not come up with his own peculiar methods -- some of them secret, some not -- for beating the long odds of killing a deer. The Ojibwa Indians of the Great Lakes figured out they could attract deer by smoking wild aster in a pipe, the smell of which was like the scent of a deer's hooves. Other tribes -- such as the Choctaws and Cherokees in the Southeast -- would carry skinned-out deer heads on their belts, which they could wear over their heads whenever they needed to make a stalk (this is no longer an advisable, or legal, technique). They used decoys and calls, and they knew that banging a pair of antlers together could summon a buck during the rut. In this book we have tried to compile some of the best information and most interesting pieces written about deer in Sports Afield since the magazine was founded in 1887. There were not as many deer to hunt back then, but over the last quarter century deer populations have boomed in nearly every state but Alaska and Hawaii, and so have the articles written about them. Many of these pieces originally appeared in the Sports Afield Almanac, which was introduced by Editor Ted Kesting in 1972; others appeared as departments or short features. All told, more than 250 deer hunters contributed, making this, we hope, a very unique look at what is now America's favorite game animal. Some of the contributors-like Dwight Schuh and Peter Fiduccia, Tom McIntyre and Ted Kerasote-are what we would call pros. They have hunted, studied and written about deer all their lives. Others are just guys who wanted to share a couple of their best deer-hunting secrets. Do not be surprised if you turn up some contradictory views. There's more than one way to shoot, skin, and cook a deer; but it may be that the best way of all is the one you have to figure out on your own." "This is the finest book on whitetail hunting that I have seen." -- Larry Myhre, Sioux City Journal

Book excerpt: Do you consider yourself a hunter? If you have you ever dated, played sports, or held a job, then your answer should be yes. We are always hunting—trying to track down and take the things we want, the things that will make our life bigger, better, safer; more satisfying, exciting, and just plain fun. In The Hunt, serial entrepreneur, hunter, and OutdoorHub founder David Farbman offers a way of thinking about work, life, and our connection with the world based upon the ancient discipline of hunting. The Hunt will inspire anyone striving for more to think like hunters—with poise, concentration, and skill; to identify their targets; and, with focus, determination, and satisfaction, to achieve those goals. Specifically, The Hunt shows how to: Get a bigger, clearer picture of your life and goals, and discover things about yourself and your ability that you’ve never noticed or seen before Gain the hunter’s special skills at observation and perception, to understand your environment; Learn “predatory consciousness” – the full understanding of your prey, whether business partners or competitors, so you can predict their actions; Harness and leverage every opportunity to obtain your desired outcomes and inspire your best thinking Fully understand where to pick battles, and where not to “hunt” at all. The principles of The Hunt will give you a clearer, sharper lens for seeing the world and shaping your role in it. You’ll make better decisions, form stronger alliances, build better strategies, target bigger wins, and uncover more opportunities. Best of all, you will become a true hunter when you know who you are, what you want, and how to get what you’re hunting for.

I do remember lots of walking, lots of grass (or snow), lots of wind, and lots of Halloween candy in my pockets. But hunting as a child never involved seeing deer, let alone shooting them. However, for some odd reason, the day after I went hunting, I do recall Dad showing up at school with deer in the back of the van. That was a cool way to spend a lunch hour, checking out deer with your friends in the parking lot, but they were never my deer. My luck changed for the better when I reached 14, which was the first time we went out hunting with a rifle and a license in my hands. Dad let me use his .30-30 lever action Marlin with open sights, and somehow or other we had managed to sneak into sight of a small whitetail buck browsing in some brush on the side of a hill, easily under 100 yards away. We were laying in prone position, and had all the time in the world to get a bead on that buck. It was my shot. I sat there with him in my sights, but I couldn't pull the trigger! Nope, couldn't do it. Not because I didn't want to kill him, but because I wasn't confident I'd kill him well. From my perspective, my gun sights were bigger than his body, so I had no idea if that bullet would hit him in the heart or in the legs. I was okay with killing the buck (so I thought), but I wasn't okay with maiming him instead. This was nothing like shooting at a target. So Dad took the shot instead. BANG! (Actually, all I heard was a loud, high-pitched 'whee' sound that wouldn't go away, my ears being in too much shock to register anything else.) The buck fell to his knees, and thrashed around in the brush for what seemed too long, and then lay still. I remember running like hell towards him, but probably only after Dad woke me up from my . . .
