It is intended for the use, not of schools only, but of that large and increasing class of young men in our great cities, who desire to be guided to the acquirement of a respectable knowledge of our national literature. I believe that there is sufficient novelty in its plan and execution to entitle it to a fair trial; and I am not without hopes that it may help to keep alive that interest in the great masters of the past, which cannot perish without injury.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teaching of English in Commercial Courses Whatever may be the relative value of composition and literature in the final analysis, there is no doubt that the immediate needs of the commercial pupil demand the most thorough attention to composition. At the outset the teacher should keep in mind that English is English. Business English is nothing but talking and writing in good English about business problems. What is ungrammatical or incorrect for other purposes is like wise ungrammatical or incorrect for business. The great difference between the English of a college preparatory or general course and that of a commercial course lies in the content, which in the latter is drawn almost entirely from the enterprises and operations which are associated with business. Furthermore, emphasis should be laid upon English as a means rather than as an end in itself. The practical, rather than the artistic, is the goal. This is the question asked by an ever-increasing number of thoughtful teachers. They have no wish to displace or to discredit the clas sics. On the contrary, they love and revere them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The High School Course in English While the plan of the work has been made as flexible as possible in order to adapt it to different schools, it has seemed desirable to indicate definitely how all of the details of the course should be organized and what methods should be used to bring about the required results. The object has been to consider the purpose of each part of the English work, and to show as specifically as possible what must be done and to some extent how it must be done to accomplish this purpose. By having a' definite aim for each year's work and by seeing clearly what is to be accomplished in each part of the subject, the teacher of English feels responsible for the successful completion of a specific part of the course. At the same time the originality and ability of the teacher need not be ham pered by a definite plan but may be exercised in adapting the work to different conditions in different schools and classes. In discussing the course in English, the general aim and methods in teaching the important elements, composition and reading, are taken up first, and then the particular phases of each subject to be presented in each year, are considered. What is presented under the general topics, reading and com position, therefore, applies to the work of each year unless otherwise stated, and usually is not repeated in considering {each year of the course. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sufficiency and Defects of the English Communion Office HE object which led to the enterprise of this subject was essentially practical. Considerable outcry had been raised against the interpolation into the service by the Celebrant of parts of the Unreformed Office. The outcry interpreted this action as throwing doubt or discredit on the Office of our Church. And this interpretation is justified by the open avowals of many who are addicted to this practice. They allege defect or deficiency in our Office. Others, indeed, without such allegation or conscious admission, defend their interpolations as conducing to greater fulness or richness. The object of this work in part'is to attempt to disprove the charges of insufficiency and to show the redundancy of such interpolations. The nature of the interpolations in View has been already defined. There is no reference to any private1 intercessions or devo tions of the Celebrant, but to the direct interpolation of portions of other Offices. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Working Course in English for the Public Schools A well-rounded presentation of reading requires the subject to be approached from two distinct points of view. In the first, methods are used to give the children a mastery of the technique of pronounciation. In this approach the New Education System or the Ward System of Rational Reading may be taken as a basis. In as much as drill in reading based on the phonetic method is apt to develop mere formal work, unaccompanied on the part of the child by an understanding of the sense, a wholly different approach to the reading lesson must at times be made. This approach is an attempt to lead the child into the lesson by making him appeciate its thought. The child should be induced to "sense" the thought behind the words. An appeal must be made to his experience to make him realize the thought. He should be led to see vividly the scenes portrayed by the sentences. Lessons in which the words convey even by their very sounds a large part, at least, of their meaning should be chosen as often as possible for this second phase of the work. The child is to be made to see, to feel, to picture the central idea of the sentence. Having done this, he is ready to utilize the formal articulation of words, gained through the study of words phonetically, in the clear and live expression of the thought as he reads the sentence. "How to Teach Reading," by S. H. Clark (S. F. & Co.), deals at length, in chapter viii, with the expression of the central idea of the sentence. School reading naturally divides itself into three heads; first, the regular recitation work in the State Series Reader. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teaching of High School English: June, 1914 Makers of high school courses of study and high school teachers have not been unmindful of these considerations. More of the pupils' time during the high school period is devoted to English than to any other subject, and this independent of the fact that every recitation is, in a sense, a recitation in English. In the large academic high schools there are more teachers of English than of any other subject. How far the results of the teaching justify the time and energy expended is not easily determined. It is not to be denied that results are not always what either the public or the teachers themselves could wish. In this connection there should be taken into account the forces at work outside of school which impair the results of English teaching, and which seriously handicap the work of teachers in this subject as the work of no other body of high school teachers is handicapped. Some of these forces are the prevailing low standards of spoken English in many homes and in many communities, the dislike of a large number of pupils for written composition of any sort, their inability to see the relation of good English to the practical affairs of the world, and the enormous amount of cheap periodical matter which the news stands offer in tempting colors or pictorial adornment to old and young alike. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of English Literature for Secondary Schools By an arrangement of type the book is adapted for various courses of study. It will probably be enough for beginners to keep to the larger type, and it may even be advisable for the teacher to restrict their studies to a selection of the more important authors. In a book of this kind, involving the record of thou sands of facts, it is impossible that perfect accuracy can at once, if at last, be attained. It is as accurate, s0'far as it goes, as I have been able by a considerable amount of reading and study to make it. I shall be thankful to receive notes of correction, and any suggestions that I may be favored with will be carefully considered. In its preparation I have necessarily been indebted to many writers. Where my obligations are so manifold and various, it would be invidious to particularize them; but I cannot avoid expressing my indebtedness, direct or indirect, to the professorial teaching and published work of Professor Masson, of Edinburgh. Whatever of merit the book contains is largely due to him; the faults are my own. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Foundation English the Expression of Ideas As high school teachers we have been slow to arise to the occasion. Our teaching has often been too aca demic; we have copied the college methods without examining them to see whether they were pedagogically sound as high school methods. The consequence has been that we have allowed our classes to drift along, with the burden of real preparation placed on the pupils of the upper classes. Such slipshod work as this not only has failed to prepare classes properly for college, but has left out of account those pupils who are not preparing for college, as well as those who leave school before the course is completed. We are beginning to see, how ever, that English as well as other branches of study can be taught in a definite and logical manner; that the proper time for beginning the work, whether in prepara tion for college or for the world at large, is in the first year; that, sound as college methods may be for the col lege, they may;r not be sound for the high school; that the whole of rhetoric should not be taught in the first year, or in any year, any more than the whole of algebra or the whole of Latin; that a book containing all the prin ciples of rhetoric is, at this early stage, in the highest degree confusing; and that practice under direction is essential to coherent expression.
