Book Synopsis Reader Response in Elementary Classrooms by : Nicholas J. Karolides
Download or read book Reader Response in Elementary Classrooms written by Nicholas J. Karolides and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-03-09 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reading is a quest. Likened to an adventure -- both metaphoric and real -- the quest is a journey of discovery. The reader's search encompasses the sensations of the experience itself, accompanying emotions, sense and meaning engendered by the experience, and understandings of the self, others, and the world around. Out of curiosity, readers also search for an extensive array of information. The journey can be envisioned and contemplated again and again after the reading act itself is completed. In a meaningful way, the reader's quest and its discoveries are life enduring and life fulfilling. The purpose of this volume is two-fold: * to establish and explore the essential features of reader response theory and its rendering of the reading process, and * to acknowledge a philosophy of teaching and to illustrate teaching strategies to evoke and enhance readers' responses. Understanding the ways in which the reader affects the reading and how the reading happens will illuminate classroom pedagogy. This text establishes and explores the essential features of reader response theory and its rendering of the reading process. The essays acknowledge a philosophy of teaching and illustrate a spectrum of teaching strategies to evoke and enhance readers' responses, including whole and small-group discussion; story drama; readers' theatre; journal writing; scripts, letters, stories, and other writings; and "body punctuation." A case study format is used to illustrate these strategies in action in real classrooms.

Book Synopsis Literature for Today's Young Adults by : Kenneth L. Donelson
Download or read book Literature for Today's Young Adults written by Kenneth L. Donelson and published by Good Year Books. This book was released on 1997 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With 140 fewer pages than the fourth edition, the fifth obviously has been tightened; it's partly in the format, with narrower margins and less white space. Otherwise, some text has been rephrased or rearranged and topics (for example, adolescent psychology) given shorter shrift. Coverage of Holocaust literature has been expanded, and discussion of problem novels improved. Sports books have been dumped in with humor, movies, and other stuff, including humorous poetry, which, it seems, the authors feel is the only kind teens read for pleasure; other types of poetry as well as short stories and drama are relegated to the English classroom, coverage of which has been enlarged. The chapter on sf and fantasy is good on historical aspects but weak on today's writers. A short list of Internet listserves and Web sites has been incorporated as part of using YA literature in the library. Once again, updating of appendixes seems spotty. Nevertheless, this is useful as a resource for youth librarians and a tool for teaching YA literature. Sally Estes.

Book Synopsis Literature and the Child by : Bernice E. Cullinan
Download or read book Literature and the Child written by Bernice E. Cullinan and published by Wadsworth Publishing Company. This book was released on 1998 with total page 616 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With a slender design and appealing art, Cullinan and Galda present a thought provoking discussion on how children can read to respond, read to learn, and read to enjoy. This text provides evaluation criteria for selecting superior children's books, rather than listing thousands of titles and synopses. Booklists direct readers to quality literature, and extended discussions of selected titles demonstrate the selection criteria. Multicultural literature is discussed throughout the text, with a separate chapter on more specific multicultural issues. Numerous teaching ideas, many of which are contributed by classroom teachers, provide practical applications. This is a book for teachers, stressing the use of good books in a literature based curriculum.
