The area has some of the finest golf courses in the world and can boast of a rich championship heritage. The first golf was played here in the early 1890s, and the first major championship was held at Cleveland's historic Euclid Club in 1907 when Jerome Travers won the U.S. Amateur. Canterbury, Firestone and other great courses in the area have been the site of a host of major PGA and amateur championships. All the great players from the past century-plus have walked the fairways of Northeast Ohio, including Hagen, Snead, Palmer, Nicklaus, Woods, and even Bobby Jones and Harry Vardon.

Euclid Golf was built on land owned by John D. Rockefeller, who lent it to the Euclid Club for its golf course. Developer Barton R. Deming employed Garden City principles and deed restrictions to entice the elite of Cleveland, while architects Howell and Thomas, Charles Schneider, and others designed splendid houses in the revival styles that defined gracious living. As prominent Clevelanders made their homes in Euclid Golf, Fairmount Boulevard became known as "The Euclid Avenue of the Heights."

Book excerpt: The world of golf is rife with unexplainable happenings that seemingly defy the rules of gravity and logic: There are those badly hit shots last seen disappearing into a grove of trees, only to be rediscovered on the putting green. And what of those perfectly struck drives that rocketed into the crisp blue beyond never to be seen again? Players have learned to lay blame on “the Golf Gods,” and go about their rounds. There are, however, the other stories—tales of apparitions gliding across a course, unexplained noises emanating from uninhabited rooms of a clubhouse, or the phantom golfer who appears out of nowhere to play a shot and vanishes just as suddenly. Haunted Golf explores such stories from the clubhouses of New England to the fairways of New Orleans and the links of Great Britain. Bringing readers on a journey that will enlighten, entertain, and send shivers, this book also delves into the history and flavor of the locations, painting evocative portraits of the courses and the communities. It includes a foreword by English golfer and golf analyst Peter Oosterhuis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The executive editor of Sports Illustrated offers an in-depth analysis and behind-the-scenes look at the historic 2008 match between tennis titans. In the 2008 Wimbledon men’s final, Centre Court was a stage set worthy of Shakespearean drama. Five-time champion Roger Federer was on track to take his rightful place as the most dominant player in the history of the game. He just needed to cling to his trajectory. So, in the last few moments of daylight, Centre Court witnessed a coronation. Only it wasn’t a crowning for the Swiss heir apparent but for a swashbuckling Spaniard. Twenty-two-year-old Rafael Nadal prevailed, in five sets, in what was, according to the author, “essentially a four-hour, forty-eight-minute infomercial for everything that is right about tennis—a festival of skill, accuracy, grace, strength, speed, endurance, determination, and sportsmanship.” It was also the encapsulation of a fascinating rivalry, hard fought and of historic proportions. In the tradition of John McPhee’s classic Levels of the Game, Strokes of Genius deconstructs this defining moment in sport, using that match as the backbone of a provocative, thoughtful, and entertaining look at the science, art, psychology, technology, strategy, and personality that go into a single tennis match. With vivid, intimate detail, Wertheim re-creates this epic battle in a book that is both a study of the mechanics and art of the game and the portrait of a rivalry as dramatic as that of Ali–Frazier, Palmer–Nicklaus, and McEnroe–Borg. “Deftly touches on all the defining factors of contemporary tennis.” —San Francisco Chronicle “Illuminates a kingdom changing hands. An engrossing book.” —Bud Collins

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was 1973 when, as a very poor (grade-wise) junior in high school, I decided to join the Army once I graduated from high school. Living in a very small southern Minnesota farming community, my options were limited and I, having spent the best part of my high school days having fun and ignoring my grades, would not be accepted in any respectable college or university. While thumbing through the current issue of Cosmopolitan, a card fell out, urging me to send in for more information on the Armed Services. My initial service of choice was the Air Force but they wanted a minimum commitment of four years. Since the Army only wanted three, I chose it instead. I signed up for the Delayed Entry Program – joining before my high school graduation, after which time I would go on active duty. Joining early guaranteed my promotion from E-1 to E-2 once I survived Basic Training. Eleven days after graduation, I was on an airplane to Columbia, South Carolina’s Fort Jackson. It was early June and extremely hot. I was all by myself – unless you count the other hundreds of women who were also beginning their Army careers. It was scary but I took comfort in the fact that we were all in the same boat. This book describes my experiences in Basic Training, my computer training, and my two and a half years in The Pentagon as a Computer Console Operator. Back in 1974, women in Basic Training trained with other women – no men allowed, however, some of the Drill Instructors were male. We were still considered members of the Women’s Army Corps, commonly called WACS – we were not fully integrated in the “regular” Army until 1976 or so. But we trained wearing fatigues, boots, wool socks, hauling field packs and canteens – just like the men. I was and still am, opinionated, mouthy and contrary to authority. How in the world did I survive three years in the Army? I stood steadfast to my motto: Just Shut Your Mouth and Do What You’re Told.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Life in America often rushes past us at a blazing speed. In this provocative and witty book, Steven Michael Hubele chronicles some of the events in his life spent with his fifty-year relationship with his father and twenty-five years of experience as a father to his two daughters. His story is full of all the minor disasters and wonderful coincidences that characterize life in the Midwest. Before his life as a published author, Steve took notes and kept track of interesting and sometimes tragic events, but always tried to keep a sense of humor. Brought to life are stories about work, playing golf, and learning how to act from his father in life and in sickness. In his trademark celebratory comment, each story ends with the words, The memories remain. The hope for reading this book is that it brings some peace as a source of merriment. Yesterdays failures and triumphs earn tomorrows joys. Steven Michael Hubele is the author of Almost Full Circle. He lives in Affton, a modest community in St. Louis County, Missouri. He continues to tell more stories and make more memories for his two daughters, just as his father did for him. Author photograph: by Allison Hubele
