Book excerpt: “The cross-section of poets with varying poetics and styles gathered here is only one of the many admirable achievements of this volume.” —Claudia Rankine in the New York Times The Golden Shovel Anthology celebrates the life and work of poet and civil rights icon Gwendolyn Brooks through a dynamic new poetic form, the Golden Shovel, created by National Book Award–winner Terrance Hayes. An array of writers—including winners of the Pulitzer Prize, the T. S. Eliot Prize, and the National Book Award, as well as a couple of National Poets Laureate—have written poems for this exciting new anthology: Rita Dove, Billy Collins, Danez Smith, Nikki Giovanni, Sharon Olds, Tracy K. Smith, Mark Doty, Sharon Draper, Richard Powers, and Julia Glass are just a few of the contributing poets. This second edition includes Golden Shovel poems by two winners and six runners-up from an international student poetry competition judged by Nora Brooks Blakely, Gwendolyn Brooks’s daughter. The poems by these eight talented high school students add to Ms. Brooks’s legacy and contribute to the depth and breadth of this anthology.

Book excerpt: In 1898 Tahirassawichi went to Washington "only to speak about religion" (as he told the American government) only to preserve the prayers. And the Capitol did not impress him." --from "Tahirassawichi in Washington" Ernesto Cardenal, Nicaraguan poet, priest, and revolutionary, foresees a new order for humanity. Here in his Indian poems, Father Cardenal interweaves myth, legend, history, and contemporary reality to speak to many subjects, including the assaults on the Iroquois Nation, the political and cultural life of ancient Mexico, the Ghost Dance movement, the disappearance of the buffalo, U.S. policy during the Vietnam War, and human rights in Central America. Each text is rich with history, poetry, and spiritual insight. This bilingual edition is the only complete collection of Father Cardenal's Indian poems in either Spanish or English. Cardenal has checked and approved the translations and the glossary of cultural and historical referents. "Of epic proportions... The literal translation conveys the epigrammic style and didactic, political message.... Of timely interest." --Library Journal "Priest and Nicaraguan revolutionary as well as poet, Cardenal epitomizes what makes literature live in Central America today. His poems are both sonorous and accessible, political and mystical." --Booklist "... a spectacular work..." --Books of the South West

Book excerpt: THE CROSS ROADS OF DESTINY Little children, their minds filled with wonder soon start trying to find out the truth about the strange and intriguing world in which they find themselves. They regularly consult the giants of this land, whom they regard as the established Gods. They constantly bombard them with questions and get all sorts of weird answers, which serves only to increase their puzzlement. Christmas comes around and that huge and benevolent old gentleman with thick red coat and bushy white beard stealthily delivers presents of the child’s choice in the dead of the night. Amongst the fascinating toys, one inevitably finds a large book often called the Golden Treasure Book. This book is filled with pictures of dinosaurs, ancient cities and stars and planets. At least in this book the child must find out all that he wishes to know. Twenty years later our little child is now himself an established God with little children of his own who ask the same eternal questions. Unfortunately, he has learned very little in all this time and the answers which he gives his children are the same inadequate ones which he received himself. This is the lot of the average man, he never learns the real and basic truths of life, and after he reaches maturity he usually ceases trying. The dirty devices of adult humanity are by now much more intriguing to his mind.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Golden Poems by British and American Authors Having this popular aim prominently in view, the compiler of the present volume has hoped to be able, by limiting his selections as closely as possible to short pieces, to bring together a larger number and greater variety of popular poetical favorites than can perhaps be found elsewhere in equal compass. It would of course be too much to expect that any reader could find here all his favorite pieces. Judgments would differ in many instances as to what should be given precedence; and some chance omissions are inevitable. As a necessary result of the preference for short pieces, many of the older writers are represented but sparingly: and from this there also results, what it is hoped may prove to be an advantage - and what, indeed, has been one of the objects of the book - that many pieces are to be found here which are not usually given in similar collections. In order to afford as wide a representation of authors as possible, the selections have been confined, except in a very few instances, to a small number from each. Many authors, indeed, are known by but a single piece - which would hence have a special claim to a place here. As far as practicable, whole poems have been chosen; but where an author could best be represented by some familiar or characteristic extract, this has been used, and in such case the full title of the poem from which the extract is taken usually appears at the end. Great pains have been taken to secure correct versions of the pieces used. This is, however, a matter of too much difficulty to permit any one who has ever attempted it to be confident of entire success.
