Book excerpt: Excerpt from On the Milling of Gold Quartz Dear sir My last paper to the State Geological Society on The Milling of Gold Quartz, wherein I tried to describe the process of simple amalgamation of the raw pyritic matter in wooden barrels, appears from the great number of letters that I have received respecting it, after its publication in the Mining and Scientific Press, to have attracted considerable attention, and has, therefore, encouraged me to resume the subject, but this time as a contribution to the State Mining Bureau; you having kindly offered to allow the specimens accompanying this paper, and intended to illustrate whati have stated, to remain for a short time at the rooms of the Mining Bureau, to give those who feel interested in the mat ter a chance of examining them. You have also promised to put some very important and interesting specimens from your private collection with them. I can only now repeat what I have stated on a former occasion, that at the present time I think scarcely anything can be of greater importance to the mining interests of this State, than a simple and cheap mode of extracting the gold from low grade veinstone, and the determination Of the true condition of the ores associated with it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Gold Mining Districts, With Plans and Sections Hence we need not be surprised at: finding alannlanco ot' globules of mercury in the tailings of some of our mills when we witness the mode of introducing mercury. Assuming that the average yield of gold in auv parcel of quartz is one ounce to the ten, and that in a battery containing live stampers, live tons of ore are crushed in twenty-four hours, the total quan tity of mercury which should be added according to the lore going directions is six ounces, allowing one ounce and one fifth per ton. This quantity should be distributed at the rate of one quarter of an ounce per hour, or about one-twelfth of a tea spoon at a time. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Gold Veins Near Great Falls, Maryland: A Discussion of the History of Prospecting and Mining in the Great Falls Area and a Description of the Gold-Bearing Quartz Veins Small deposits of native gold are present along an anastomosing system of quartz veins and shear zones just east of Great Falls, Montgomery County, Md. The deposits were discovered in 1861 and were worked sporadically until 1951, yielding more than ounces of gold. The vein system and the principal veins within it strike 'a few degrees west of north, at an appreciable angle to foliation and fold axial planes in enclosing rocks of the Wis'sahickon Formation of late Precambrian( age. The veins cut granitic rocks of Devonian or pre-devonian age and may be as young as Triassic. Further development of the deposits is unlikely under present economic condi tions because of their generally low gold content and because much of the vein system lies on park property, but study of the Great Falls vein system may be useful in the search for similar deposits elsewhere in the Appalachian Piedmont. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Model of an Arizona Gold Mine This model represents a small gold mine of med ium richness in a vertical quartz vein six feet wide. The vein and mine workings are presented in section, that is, as they would appear if they were cut through along the center of the vein and one-half removed. This model is intended to illustrate the ordinary features present in some form in the great majority of all metal mines and to show the orderly manner in which mines are developed and the ores extracted. Great diversity in the nature and structure of ore deposits compels a corresponding variety in the details of workings by means of which the ores of these de posits are extracted. However diverse these details may be, they all may be grouped as parts of major features which are common to nearly all metal mines. In this respect these excavations resemble the more familiar structures on the surface. As build ings, however much as they may differ in appearance, are all built up of units, as walls, floors, windows and doors, so these underground workings are composed of groups of such units, as drifts, cross-cuts, stopes, raises, etc. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: GOLD: History and Genesis of Deposits is the product of an effort by the Society of Economic Geologists to publish materials that will expand knowl edge concerning timely, specific topics important to the study of economic geology and to economic geologists. A volume on gold was selected for a general review-type publication because of the importance of the gold mining industry in the 1980s. The officers and council of the Society of Economic Geologists authorized the preparation of this book on gold in 1981, and Dr. Robert W. Boyle was selected as its author. Dr. Boyle has extensive experience in the study of gold deposits. He has an international reputation and a broad interest and understanding of the gold mining industry, the origin of gold deposits, and the history of gold as a metal and ore from prehistoric times to recent. Dr. Boyle uses important publications on gold deposits as source materials to document the various pathways of geological thought over time to introduce the reader to modern concepts. The book contains a wealth of information concerning gold.

The wash ing away of our sins, and the reversing and changing of our affections, causing us to hate sin and to love and to long after holiness, IS a stupendous act of the Holy Spirit. The life of God is never grown into us, nor developed out of human affection, but an inexpressible miracle of life infused from an uncreated fountain. In the next place the gold as it exists in the mine or quartz is not amalgamated with other substances, though it is in close proximity to baser metals, and existing in the same lump with rock, or iron, or sand, yet it is always gold, and nothing but gold it never loses its inherent character. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mineral Deposits It is hardly necessary to call attention to the differences in prices of metals which cause wide disparity in the amounts of different metals necessary to constitute ores. An iron ore must ordinarily contain at least 30 per cent. Of iron - usually much more. A volcanic rock containing 15 per cent. Of iron is far from being an iron ore, but quartz containing per cent. Of gold is a rich gold ore, worth $330 a metric ton; in fact, as' little as per cent. Of gold, equivalent to 1 gram to the metric ton, or a value Of 66 cents a ton, if occurring in an ore with other useful substances, is ordinarily paid for by smelting works.
