You have also promised to put some very important and interesting specimens from your private collection with them. Assuming that the average yield of gold in auv parcel of quartz is one ounce to the ten, and that in a battery containing live stampers, live tons of ore are crushed in twenty-four hours, the total quan tity of mercury which should be added according to the lore going directions is six ounces, allowing one ounce and one fifth per ton. This quantity should be distributed at the rate of one quarter of an ounce per hour, or about one-twelfth of a tea spoon at a time. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Gold Veins Near Great Falls, Maryland: A Discussion of the History of Prospecting and Mining in the Great Falls Area and a Description of the Gold-Bearing Quartz Veins Small deposits of native gold are present along an anastomosing system of quartz veins and shear zones just east of Great Falls, Montgomery County, Md. The deposits were discovered in 1861 and were worked sporadically until 1951, yielding more than ounces of gold. The vein system and the principal veins within it strike 'a few degrees west of north, at an appreciable angle to foliation and fold axial planes in enclosing rocks of the Wis'sahickon Formation of late Precambrian( age. The veins cut granitic rocks of Devonian or pre-devonian age and may be as young as Triassic. Further development of the deposits is unlikely under present economic condi tions because of their generally low gold content and because much of the vein system lies on park property, but study of the Great Falls vein system may be useful in the search for similar deposits elsewhere in the Appalachian Piedmont. The vein and mine workings are presented in section, that is, as they would appear if they were cut through along the center of the vein and one-half removed. This model is intended to illustrate the ordinary features present in some form in the great majority of all metal mines and to show the orderly manner in which mines are developed and the ores extracted. Great diversity in the nature and structure of ore deposits compels a corresponding variety in the details of workings by means of which the ores of these de posits are extracted. However diverse these details may be, they all may be grouped as parts of major features which are common to nearly all metal mines. In this respect these excavations resemble the more familiar structures on the surface.
