Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written in 1802–03, The Natural Daughter and The Bride of Messina show Goethe and Schiller writing in a neo-classical manner far removed from the Sturm und Drang style of their early works. The plays reflect their authors’ reaction to the troubled post-Revolutionary years of their composition — a counter-Revolutionary one, both in an aesthetic and at least implicitly political sense. Their eponymous heroines embody hopes of restored familial harmony and political order, yet in both plays those hopes are tragically frustrated. Goethe’s Eugenia, natural daughter of the Duke, is abducted and threatened with exile by a political conspiracy, and must renounce her aristocratic aspirations. Reduced to bourgeois anonymity, she hopes nevertheless one day to re-emerge and serve King and country, but the ending of the play is at best ambiguous. Schiller’s Beatrice is loved by both Manuel and Cesar, brothers whose mutual hatred has plunged Messina into civil strife. Deception, misunderstanding, and a terrible secret weave a fatal web, whose unravelling leaves both brothers dead and Messina rulerless to face an uncertain future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this, the second volume of Goethe: The Poet and the Age, Nicholas Boyle covers the most eventful and crowded years of Goethe's life: the period of the French Revolution, which turned his life upside down, and of the German philosophical revolution which ushered in the periods of Idealismand Romanticism. It was also a period dominated by two intense personal relationships: with Schiller, Weimar's other great poet, philosopher, and dramatist, and with Christiana Vulpius, the mother of his son. Goethe was a poet of supreme intelligence and sensitivity living through political andintellectual changes which have shaped the modern world. The transition into modernity is the theme of this volume: Goethe's harrowing experiences of the Revolutionary wars; the explosion of new ideas in philosophy and literature which he absorbed and adapted and which for ten years made Jena theintellectual capital of Europe; the political upheaval initiated by Napoleon which destroyed the Holy Roman Empire in which Goethe had grown up, and with it the cultural role he had envisaged for Jena and Weimar. Boyle vividly narrates both the large-scale events and the personal dramas of thisexciting time, to give lucid accounts of important thinkers whom English readers have hitherto found inaccessible, and to analyse in new ways Goethe's works of the period, notably Wilhelm Meister, The Natural Daughter, and Faust.

Book excerpt: 'A. N. Wilson's biography of the German polymath is wild, brilliant and has all the intelligence to rival its subject' - Frances Wilson, the Telegraph 'Rich and full and passionate and intelligent and deeply needed for these murky times' – Ben Okri 'Exuberant and wide-ranging' - Miranda Seymour, author of The Haunted Life of Jean Rhys A spellbinding recreation of Goethe's life and work from one of our greatest biographers. Goethe was the inventor of the psychological novel, a pioneer scientist, great man of the theatre and a leading politician. As A. N. Wilson argues in this groundbreaking biography, it was his genius and insatiable curiosity that helped catapult the Western world into the modern era. A N. Wilson tackles the life of Goethe with characteristic wit and verve. From his youth as a wild literary prodigy to his later years as Germany's most respected elder statesman, Wilson hones in on Goethe's undying obsession with the work he would spend his entire life writing – Faust. Goethe spent over 60 years writing his retelling of Faust, a strange and powerful work that absorbed all the philosophical questions of his time as well as the revolutions and empires that came and went. It is his greatest work, but as Wilson explores, it is also something much more - it is the myth of how we came to be modern.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Goethe's ranging literary genius, nimble yet luminous, resists simple classification. Poet and natural philosopher, critic and raconteur, Goethe was the most commanding literary presence of his time. Goethe and His Publishers organizes for the first time the myriad details of Goethe's career in print. Director of the German publishing company Suhrkamp Verlag, Siegfried Unseld brings a singular perspective to this biography, focusing our attention on an essential component of Goethe's literary endeavors: his relationship to his publishers. Carefully examining each work, Unseld covers the range of Goethe's oeuvre, from first anonymous publications to eventual monumental editions brought out by Johann Friedrich Cotta, the most renowned publisher of his day. Unseld sifts through the rich correspondence between Goethe and his publishers, as well as letters to and from friends, colleagues, and contemporaries. Analyzing publishing contracts, draft contracts, and historical documents, Unseld reveals the tremendous energy Goethe exerted on behalf of his manuscripts. During negotiations he was sometimes circumspect and reserved, other times demanding and assertive. These exchanges not only shed new light on Goethe's complex character but also show how he changed the author's role in the publishing process. Thus, this work offers a penetrating study on the intricate and many-tiered relations between author and publisher, then and today. Goethe and His Publishers celebrates Goethe's works, his life, and his times, from the viewpoint of a publisher today. Written by an individual who has devoted much of his life to the study of the poet whom he reveres, such a personal approach not only forms an excellent introduction to Goethe's work but helps restore Goethe to his rightful place in the world of letters.
