Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Growing up the son of agnostics, John Koessler saw a Catholic church on one end of the street and a Baptist on the other. In the no-man’s land between the two, this curious outside wondered about the God they worshipped—and began a lifelong search to comprehend the grace and mystery of God. A Stranger in the House of God addresses fundamental questions and struggles faced by spiritual seekers and mature believers. Like a contemporary Pilgrim’s Progress, it traces the author’s journey and explores his experiences with both charismatic and evangelical Christianity. It also describes his transformation from religious outsider to ordained pastor. John Koessler provides a poignant and often humorous window into the interior of the soul as he describes his journey from doubt and struggle with the church to personal faith

Book excerpt: Scripture reveals a God who meets us where we are, not where we pretend to be. No More Faking Fine is your invitation to get honest with God through the life-giving language of lament. If you've ever been given empty clichés during challenging times, you know how painful it is to be misunderstood by well-meaning people. When life hurts, we often feel pressure--from others and ourselves--to keep it together, suck it up, or pray it away. But Scripture reveals a God who lovingly invites us to give honest voice to our emotions when life hits hard. For most of her life, Esther Fleece Allen believed she could bypass the painful emotions of her broken past by shutting them down altogether. She was known as an achiever and an overcomer on the fast track to success. But in silencing her pain, she robbed herself of the opportunity to be healed. Maybe you've done the same. Esther's journey into healing began when she discovered that God has given us a real-world way to deal with raw emotions and an alternative to the coping mechanisms that end up causing more pain. It's called lament--the gut-level, honest prayer that God never ignores, never silences, and never wastes. No More Faking Fine is your permission to lament, taking you on a journey down the unexpected pathway to true intimacy with God. Drawing from careful biblical study and hard-won insight, Esther reveals how to use God's own language to come closer to him as he leads us through our pain to the light on the other side, teaching you that: We are robbing ourselves of a divine mystery and a divine intimacy when we pretend to have it all together God does not expect us to be perfect; instead, he meets us where we are There is hope beyond your heartache, disappointment, and grief Like Esther, you'll soon find that when one person stops faking fine, it gives everyone else permission to do the same.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tim's wife, Anne, died of breast cancer at the age of forty-nine, having battled against the disease for more than six years. Her suffering had a profound influence on their lives and that of their church, and raised challenging questions: - If "God is in control," does that mean God is to blame for suffering? - Why did God not heal Anne? - Is Anne's death what God wanted to happen? - Does prayer make any difference? - What is God doing about evil? People's experience of suffering causes them to examine the kind of God they believe in, the nature of the universe God made, and God's activity in the world. This book explores all three aspects and responds constructively to the complex issues that the above questions pose--and provides powerful reasons for confidence in the firm Christian hope.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book of Genesis reveals that God created humans and animals on the same day, the sixth day of the creation. Human beings were formed from the dust of the ground. If there was no image of God in human beings, and if there was no spirit of God in humans, humans and animals would have no differences. Thankfully, humans do have the spirit of God within them and are made in God’s image and his likeness. In In the Beginning (Bereshith), author Andrew Choi examines the book of Genesis, telling the stories of and examining the lives of the characters within. With discussion questions and reflections included, he shares the lessons that today’s Christians can glean from this book that forms the basis of the Bible. Choi tells how Genesis is a theological book, a story of God. Genesis is the restoration, redemption, and reconciliation story of the panorama unfolding from ancient times until now.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work by Paul McLean is a deep weekly devotional that is both introspective and interactive. It is a weekly study as opposed to a daily reading in order to involve the reader on a more contemplative journey into focused biblical issues. By use of a weekly instead of a daily study, this devotional allows an opportunity to go deeper with God by narrowing the reader’s focus on particular biblical principles that impact his or her personal sphere. McLean vigorously maintains that Bible study, deep personal analysis, and prayer are critical anchors in weathering any of life’s storms while at the same time producing Christian growth and maturity. They are also the pillars from which growth, life balance, and fulfillment are achieved. This book is interactive through the use of journaling thoughts, impressions, and messages received through connecting with God’s word (Bible) during the week. Essentially, the reader evaluates his or her life by answering, in journalistic form, pointed and personal life questions. McLean believes that prayer and contemplative study play critical roles in the process of hearing from God. This devotional can also be used as a study guide for group sharing and personal growth. Each chapter touches on insights and personal experiences McLean has encountered in his work as a probation officer and from his involvement in prison ministry. He discovered that by witnessing the transforming power of Jesus Christ in the lives of criminal offenders, he was changed and shaped by God for a higher purpose.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Memory of Rebecca Ann Leighow 2/18/1951 - 10/17/2007 OVERVIEW Two of the most profound uncertainties that man can ponder are: what is the meaning of life, and what is the meaning of death? Many would say that the answers to these questions are unknowable and too mysterious to be comprehended. Reverend Thomas Leighow believes however, that God has given us these answers, contained within the pages of the Bible. The only way we can live in peace and harmony with death, is by having a true and correct perspective of what death actually is. Death can only be properly understood when it is viewed through the eyes of the very Creator of life and death – the God of the Bible. In Dying to Live With God, Rev. Leighow opens the doors to understanding life and death as it should be understood - from God’s eternal perspective. The reality of death, and the meaning of death, can only truly come from the mind of the One who set death in place. Death is not just a by-product of life, rather, death is a necessary component of the divine plan of a sovereign God who holds the power over life and death. For those who live in fear of death, or for those who have not recovered after the loss of a loved one, this book will give you an understanding of death that will provide you with a blessed assurance and comfort to face your own “valley of the shadow of death.”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I wrote this book to communicate many of the lessons that God has taught me through many trials in my life. I hope to provide you those hard-knock lessons without the cost I paid for them in physical, mental, and spiritual pain. My reference to hard-knock lessons is based on the fact that most of them were self-inflicted in that God promises chastening to those that He loves. I clearly understand that God must love me a lot based on the frequency of the chastening. Those lessons sometimes came with scars that lasted a lifetime although God forgave the sin from the beginning. Also, I included doctrinal truths that I learned far too late in my life. I so wish I had learned them earlier as my life would have been more peaceful and spiritually more productive. The lessons were typically learned later than desired due to my lack of knowledge from a specific doctrinal teaching in the Bible. I sincerely feel God inspired and led me to write this book. The initial thought occurred when several people commented on my extraordinary life experiences and the lessons learned from those experiences. God healed me miraculously on two occasions during my life. Those comments were usually followed by a comment of needing to write a book. As for my investment in time and effort in providing you knowledge that I hope you find as valuable, I offer that my time in writing was precious as related to the time I have remaining to live. I write it while doctors have diagnosed me with stage 4 cancer and two to five months of life remaining. I pray for God's third time of healing.
