Book excerpt: Two Gods are in big trouble with Zeus. Gods will be gods and when these two taunt a fire goddess for their own entertainment, she erupts, literally, creating a whole new Hawaiian island. But Zeus is not amused and must teach them a lesson they won't forget. Who knew their punishment would lead to finding the loves of their lives? Great Zeus! (Dalton Diaz) Epimetheus knows he screwed up. Well, he knows it since Zeus pointed it out with a lightning bolt or two. He's willing to take his punishment like a Titan, but all bets are off when his beloved dead wife Pandora shows up. Pandy has no memory of him. Epimetheus has no powers, and no forethought. What could possibly go wrong? Oh My God (Ashlyn Chase) Rewritten and expanded version of 2009 Eppie nominee, same title The Greek God of wine, women, and party, falls off a balcony during Mardi Gras in New Orleans. Now he has amnesia. All he knows is that they call him 'Big D', he drinks too much and ought to give up alcohol for Lent. Mandy and Brenda flashed Dionysus right before he fell. They're nice enough to take him to an AA meeting, and then back to their homes until he recovers his memory. Fortunately, they're not too nice to be naughty. Review by Redz at Redz world-5 shooting stars and a recommended read Ms. Diaz does a great job of blending humor into this story. I liked the idea of meeting the husband to the most curious woman in the world, Pandora. I loved the imaginative punishments...Those made me giggle. There is plenty of hot sex too to keep me reading. This story kept me wondering what will happen next Oh, My God by Ashlyn Chase is the next story. Ms Chase has the second partner in crime Dionysus. Dionysus gets Mandy, a single mother struggling to make ends meet, as a love interest...The humor again is what really made me love this story. I like the twist and turns this story took and Ms. Chase does a really great job of making me smile and want more from her.

Returning to his homeland for the first time in many years, he hopes only to settle down on a farm of his own—until he comes across an impenetrable wall of eldritch fire and a lovesick youth determined to breach the wall at any cost. Behind the towering flames, he is told, lies a beautiful Valkyrie trapped in an enchanted sleep, as well as, perhaps, a golden treasure beyond mortal reckoning. It is the gold that tempts Hal to agree, against his better judgment, to assist the youth in his quest. But to find a way past the fiery wall, they must first brave gnomes, ghosts, and the wrath of the gods themselves. For a mighty battle is brewing, and Hal soon finds himself caught up in a celestial conflict between Thor the Thunderer, Loki the Trickster, and most powerful of all, Wodan, the merciless Lord of Battles!

Book excerpt: * Chicago Tribune "Fall literary preview: books you need to read now" * Vulture "The Best and Biggest Books to Read This Fall" * The Guardian "A best book of 2019" After moving with his wife and two children to a smallholding in Ireland, Paul Kingsnorth expects to find contentment. It is the goal he has sought — to nest, to find home — after years of rootlessness as an environmental activist and author. Instead he finds that his tools as a writer are failing him, calling into question his foundational beliefs about language and setting him at odds with culture itself. Informed by his experiences with indigenous peoples, the writings of D.H. Lawrence and Annie Dillard, and the day-to-day travails of farming his own land, Savage Gods asks: what does it mean to belong? What sacrifices must be made in order to truly inhabit a life? And can words ever paint the truth of the world — or are they part of the great lie which is killing it?

Book excerpt: Bestselling author of Geography of Bliss returns with this funny, illuminating chronicle of a globe-spanning spiritual quest to find a faith that fits. When a health scare puts him in the hospital, Eric Weiner-an agnostic by default-finds himself tangling with an unexpected question, posed to him by a well-meaning nurse. "Have you found your God yet?" The thought of it nags him, and prods him-and ultimately launches him on a far-flung journey to do just that. Weiner, a longtime "spiritual voyeur" and inveterate traveler, realizes that while he has been privy to a wide range of religious practices, he's never seriously considered these concepts in his own life. Face to face with his own mortality, and spurred on by the question of what spiritual principles to impart to his young daughter, he decides to correct this omission, undertaking a worldwide exploration of religions and hoping to come, if he can, to a personal understanding of the divine. The journey that results is rich in insight, humor, and heart. Willing to do anything to better understand faith, and to find the god or gods that speak to him, he travels to Nepal, where he meditates with Tibetan lamas and a guy named Wayne. He sojourns to Turkey, where he whirls (not so well, as it turns out) with Sufi dervishes. He heads to China, where he attempts to unblock his chi; to Israel, where he studies Kabbalah, sans Madonna; and to Las Vegas, where he has a close encounter with Raelians (followers of the world's largest UFO-based religion). At each stop along the way, Weiner tackles our most pressing spiritual questions: Where do we come from? What happens when we die? How should we live our lives? Where do all the missing socks go? With his trademark wit and warmth, he leaves no stone unturned. At a time when more Americans than ever are choosing a new faith, and when spiritual questions loom large in the modern age, Man Seeks God presents a perspective on religion that is sure to delight, inspire, and entertain.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inundated by popular culture, many women have lost their bearings and no longer trust the internal compass that intuitively affirms those things that are good, true, and noble about womanhood. As Jesus’ favorite and most powerful teaching tactic was the parable, it is appropriate that Mary Kassian walks the reader through the compelling tale of the wild versus wise woman found in Proverbs 7. By using 20 points of contrast, she helps readers discern wild from wise, saucy from biblically savvy, and more. Girls Gone Wise in a World Gone Wild will captivate, convict, and challenge women to become decreasingly worldly and increasingly godly, and it will equip them with truth for that journey. Includes questions for personal reflection at the end of each chapter

Book excerpt: Why did the Greek gods and goddesses behave so badly? Because it is one thing for God to make man in his own image and quite another thing for man to return the favor.Whether it is Zeus constantly philandering and turning his mistress into a cow in order to escape Hera's wrath or Artemis turning a Greek voyeur into a deer to be consumed by his own hunting dogs, petty feuding and revenge seemed to be the national pastime on Mount Olympus among the Greek gods and goddesses. This book will look at the immortal, short-tempered, and oh-so-mortal actions of the Greek gods and goddesses, both major deities and the lesser ones in mythology. It will also look at the lives of heroes and how they managed to confound the gods' plans. And it will explore how the ancient Greeks tried to take advantage of their deities' fickle behavior and play to their vanity by sucking up to the god in control of the event in question. Was there a poor catch of fish? Pray to Poseidon that he may bring you a large haul. Did a fair maiden not respond to the sonnets that you penned for her about her articulated eye brows? Ask Aphrodite to change her heart and warm up to your prose. Is the city in need of feasting and revelry to cheer up its mood? Beseech Dionysus to bring a party atmosphere and possibly some of his vintage wine. The actions of the ancient Greek gods and goddesses show that despite their intelligence, strength, and power over the affairs of life, they were all-too-human and subject to earthly temptation. They also demonstrate the dangers that come with having too much of a good thing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the story of Scott Bartleson, proving that truth is indeed stranger than fiction. It's his story of first being wild for no good reason to becoming wild for God. It's also God's story. Maybe it's part of your story too. If the church has pushed you out, don't give up on God. He will never give up on you. And if a relationship with Jesus seems too remote or far-fetched, know that he specializes in people on the fringe--people just like Scott--and if you're on the fringe, people just like you. Scott Bartleson's life has never been dull. That much is sure. Raised by a single mom during a time when such situations were rare, this godly woman took Scott and his siblings to church every Sunday. But the adults cast religious judgment on her for a situation out of her control, and their children whispered disapproval to hers. This forever strained Scott's relationship with the church, and it threatened his standing with God. For the first part of his life, the enemy was winning. He controlled Scott, trying to make his grasp on this wayward youth permanent. Then God got Scott's attention--not through church or religion, but through a personal, life-changing relationship. And under the Holy Spirit's influence, Scott's life made a dramatic U-turn. He went from pursuing a destructive path to becoming God's wild man and living a life that matters. Live vicariously through Scott's Spirit-directed journey as he learns to serve God and spread the good news of Jesus to those who need it most. Be motivated through Scott's story to live a life that matters, a life with eternal consequences.

Book excerpt: Religion and Science Fiction: An Introduction guides students into deeper understanding of how religion and science fiction engage often overlapping questions. This textbook introduces key ideas of religious studies through critical consideration of print and visual media that fall within the general category of science fiction. The goal throughout is to help students move beyond simply identifying points of interrelation between religious studies and forms of what is often called, more broadly, speculative fiction, to considering how the studied texts open new ways of thinking about human (and nonhuman) experience taken to be religious. With discussion questions, lists of key terms, extensive additional resources, and suggestions for projects and essay questions, this book is a foundational text for students and instructors of religion and science fiction.
