Book excerpt: From Frank Sinatra to Michael Jackson, an insider's account of the deals and the dodges inside the music and entertainment business over the last 30 years As the son of the legendary showbiz lawyer Marty Machat, Steven Machat grew up among such names as Frank Sinatra, James Brown, Frankie Valli, and Sam Cooke. Following in his father's footsteps, by the time he was in his late 20s he was proud to see his name alongside his father's on the brass plaque outside their Broadway offices. But there was a price--Steven discovered from a young age that the glitter and the glamour too often disguises a crude and cruel reality, and that those who are publicly perceived as gods can just as easily be seen as gangsters. He found himself wondering how to live with such contradictions, and whether it is possible to maintain any sense of honor inside such a world. This beautifully constructed memoir of a life inside a fascinating world of celebrity includes appearances by Frank Sinatra, Leonard Cohen, Michael Jackson, David Copperfield, Sharon Osbourne, George Bush, Phil Collins, Suge Knight, Tupac, Biggie, Gianni Versace, Phil Spector, Joan Collins, Donny Osmond, Bobby Brown, and many more.

Book excerpt: Demon warrior puppets, sword-wielding Taoist priests, spirit mediums lacerating their bodies with spikes and blades—these are among the most dramatic images in Chinese religion. Usually linked to the propitiation of plague gods and the worship of popular military deities, such ritual practices have an obvious but previously unexamined kinship with the traditional Chinese martial arts. The long and durable history of martial arts iconography and ritual in Chinese religion suggests something far deeper than mere historical coincidence. Avron Boretz argues that martial arts gestures and movements are so deeply embedded in the ritual repertoire in part because they iconify masculine qualities of violence, aggressivity, and physical prowess, the implicit core of Chinese patriliny and patriarchy. At the same time, for actors and audience alike, martial arts gestures evoke the mythos of the jianghu, a shadowy, often violent realm of vagabonds, outlaws, and masters of martial and magic arts. Through the direct bodily practice of martial arts movement and creative rendering of jianghu narratives, martial ritual practitioners are able to identify and represent themselves, however briefly and incompletely, as men of prowess, a reward otherwise denied those confined to the lower limits of this deeply patriarchal society. Based on fieldwork in China and Taiwan spanning nearly two decades, Gods, Ghosts, and Gangsters offers a thorough and original account of violent ritual and ritual violence in Chinese religion and society. Close-up, sensitive portrayals and the voices of ritual actors themselves—mostly working-class men, many of them members of sworn brotherhoods and gangs—convincingly link martial ritual practice to the lives and desires of men on the margins of Chinese society. This work is a significant contribution to the study of Chinese ritual and religion, the history and sociology of Chinese underworld, the history and anthropology of the martial arts, and the anthropology of masculinity.

Book excerpt: The novelization of American Gangster, the major motion picture from Universal Pictures about Frank Lucas, drug czar of Harlem. The film stars Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe, and is directed by Ridley Scott. For decades the Mafia controlled the flow of heroin onto the streets of Harlem. Frank Lucas changed all that. Born in rural North Carolina, he came to New York and rose to power under notorious mobster Bumpy Johnson. When Bumpy died, Frank moved to take over the drug business. Caught in a squeeze play between the Mafia and the street dealers, Frank got creative. Instead of being a tool of the mob, he went straight to the source—Cambodia—and set up his own unique distribution system. Using his brothers as his lieutenants and selling "quality" heroin in trademark blue plastic bags, Frank Lucas and his "Country Boys" became the kings of One Hundred Twenty-Fifth Street. Frank had it made. He was rich, successful, and untouchable. . . . . . . until Richie Roberts came along. Roberts, the Eliot Ness of drug enforcement, became a pariah among other detectives in the NYPD when he turned in the million dollars in cash he found in the trunk of a dealer's car. His personal life was a mess—his wife left him, and his son hardly knew him anymore—but on the job, Roberts was all business, and his business, heading up a Federal Narcotics Squad, was busting big-time dealers. His next target? Frank Lucas. This violent, action-filled chronicle of a uniquely American family is based on Ridley Scott's film, itself based on a New York magazine profile, "The Return of Superfly" by Mark Jacobson. At the Publisher's request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Where God gives the gift, the 'foolishness of preaching' is still mighty. But best of all is a team of two: one to deliver the preliminary intellectual barrage, and the other to follow up with a direct attack on the heart." An inveterate scholar, throughout his lifetime C.S. Lewis wrote on any number of topics. While his most famous essays concern his thoughts on Christianity, he was also interested in literature, masculinity, domestic life, and war. In the nineteen essays collected inPresent Concerns, he touches on all of these and more. Though wide-ranging, these essays all share one thing: C.S. Lewis's characteristic pragmatism and persuasiveness. Many of the essays included were written between 1940 and 1945, and so pertinently reflect on the issues raised by World War II: democratic values, the need for a new chivalry, and the cynicism of the modern soldier, all of which remain relevant today. "Lewis gives us permission to admit our own doubts, our own angers and anguishes, and to know that they are part of the soul's growth."--Madeleine L'Engle

How did the Sicilian mafia begin? How did it achieve its powerful grip in Italy and America? How does it operate today? Book Synopsis God’S Perfect Timing by : Dr. David Caruth
Download or read book God’S Perfect Timing written by Dr. David Caruth and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2011-09-21 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Gods Perfect Timing: Breaking the Cycle of Poverty with Education and Faith is about how important events in our lives happen according to Gods timing, not our own. Come with me on a spiritual journey through poverty, child abuse, and my struggle to overcome dyslexia through special education. I share a chilling account of how I survived being struck by lightning at football practice at the beginning of my senior year of high school. After my dream of becoming a professional athlete got shattered, I survived on the streets with dangerous criminals." Can you make lightning appear and cause it to strike as you direct? (Job 38:35) Lucky to Be Alive For on August 18, Caruth was standing in the defensive backfield during Coronados football practice when an incredible event knocked him right off the football field and literally into medical journals. Dressed in full football gear, Caruth was struck by on the head by a bold of lightning. The bolt burned through protective padding in the helmet at the point where a metal screw was fixed, blacked the neck of his jersey, singed his pants, and left his socks looking as though theyd been treated with a blowtorch. C. W. Nevius Forward By Reverend Alfonso Wyatt I spent my career as an educator, youth developer, advocate, counselor, role model and minister transforming the lives of countless young people caught in tumultuous life circumstances beyond their control or choosing. The aforementioned perspective allows me to understand and appreciate the profound power contained in Gods Perfect Timing: Breaking The Cycle of Poverty with Education and Faith, by Dr. David D. Caruth. Brother Caruth unapologetically takes readers into his world and lays bare horrific childhood events namely: physical/sexual abuse, hunger, deprivation, physical, emotional challenges as well as the need for special education. If this were not enough, David, as a promising high school football player, with dreams of turning pro, was struck by lightning while on the practice field100 players were leveled by the bolt, David was the only one that did not get up. The story could have ended right there with yet another African American child failing to thrive, doomed to living in the now all-too-familiar clutch of poverty, crime, drugs, gangs, incarceration, nihilism and neglector dying too soon. The seeds of failure were clearly sown into the life and psyche of the author. Yet the reader will discover that in the midst of seemingly insurmountable odds, David is able to change the odds. This social miracle was accomplished by seeds planted by Davids mother, namely the seed of faith revealed in the telling of biblical stories like David and Goliath (a Divine metaphor if you will). This book shows educators, faith leaders, policy makers, parents, young people and yes, even the naysayer, how the cycle of poverty, perpetuated by low self-esteem, academic indifference, victim thinking/blaming and dysfunctional family life can be broken once and for all. So beloved, come on the arduous and ultimately triumphant journey of David D. Caruths lifetime. If you accept this invitation please be open to the reality that the same power that found a young boy at his most vulnerable time; the same power that snatched him from the sure grip of death; the same power that helped him overcome staggering life obstacles and receive a terminal degree, is the same power that can change the lives of readersnow that Gods Perfect Timing is in full effect. The Reverend Alfonso Wyatt has four decades of experience developing young people as well as working with public, private, community based youth serving organizations and the faith community involved in the same effort. Reverend Wyatt, a D.Min candidate at New York Theological Seminary, is an ordained Elder on the ministerial staff of The Greater Allen Cathedral of New York and he and his wife are co-authors of Soul Be Free Poems Prose Prayers. Preface Gods Perfect Timing: Breaking the Cycle of Poverty with Education and Faith is about how important events in our lives happen according to Gods timing, not our own. Come with me on a spiritual journey through poverty, child abuse, and my struggle to overcome a learning disability through special education. I share a chilling account of how I survived being struck by lightning at football practice at the beginning of my senior year of high school. After my dream of becoming a professional athlete got shattered, I survived on the streets with dangerous criminals. Throughout my life, my mom, Zelna A. Caruth, was my primary source of strength. She was raised in Chicago and overcame more adversity in her life than anyone I knew. Her father died in a fire when she was 4 years old and her mother passed away when she was 12. As the oldest of four siblings, with two younger sisters and a baby brother, she called Bugs, her childhood ended at a very early age. She was also my most important teacher and source of strength. She taught me not to criticize or judge others until I walked a mile in their moccasins. I understood her lessons, because I had seven older brothers and sisters and one younger sister, and my own shoes had cutout cardboard for bottoms. Like a sponge, I absorbed as much of my moms wisdom as I could. She taught me about the Bible, and to believe that God works in mysterious ways. She let me know early on in life that man would let me down, and that I needed to put my faith and trust in the Lord. If I trusted in the Lord, she would say, and not worry so much about what other people had, only then would I begin to see the miracles that God was performing in my own life. She was right of course. When I look at my own life, there are numerous times, too many to count, when my life could have, and probably should have ended, and God made a miracle happen to keep me going. I also learned that not all miracles are pleasant. Unpleasant miracles are difficult for most of us to grasp. We find it difficult to understand why a loving God would not only allow, but cause unpleasant events to happen in our lives. I questioned my mom about why bad things happened to good people and good things happened to bad people. My moms answer was that, God allowed Jesus to die on the cross, only to raise him from the dead to glorify his own power. She left it to me to figure out the meaning of her words. For most of us, those with children anyway, we find it difficult to imagine allowing our child to be crucified so that the world could bear witness to our power. God help us if our children get injured on fields of play. If our children get hurt, our hearts fill with pain and sadness, and we want the world to see us rush to comfort them. We grow up learning that people who love us should protect us from unpleasant events that occur daily in our own lives. In our house, my brothers and sisters seldom felt protected. What we felt on most days was hunger, jealousy, misery, envy and multiple kinds of abuse. I wrote this book, because I believe that, in spite of the challenges we face and endure day after day, miracles happen every day of our lives; however, most of the time, we dont recognize them when we see them. After reading this book, my hope is that you will begin to see how God works through people to influence the lives of other people. You will learn how to recognize Gods Perfect Timing in your own life, and to take action when the time is right. If God can bring me through poverty, child abuse and special education, back from death and homelessness, to earning a PhD, buying several homes for my family, and sending my children to private school, then you too should be able to have faith that God has a design on your life, and has already blessed you with miracle after miracle.
Download or read book Be Saved! written by Timothy E. Herring and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2015-03-09 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: God is crying out loud for his people. Thousands upon thousands of his children are dying unsaved! Our gangsters, our wayward teens, our ex-prisoners, and our young adults belong to God. They belong to us also. All is ours! We must face the blame. We created them. We created conditions that produced them. We shut down the mandatory military draft, the one sure way of teaching self-discipline, self-restraint, obedience, and responsibility to young adults prior to adulthood. Our Industrial Revolution paled in the light of the Technological Revolution, where high-paying apprenticeships and other jobs were given to robotics; one robot replaced twenty hard-working men with large families. Most of the remaining manufacturing jobs were shipped abroad, and the Industrial Revolution mud-bottomed out. Fast-food jobs were unable to support their families. We took away the industrial schools for delinquents who had large families; we gave these schools to the robotically displaced. Delinquents were pushed into jobs that could not support families. We made shotgun weddings disappear, so did the fathers. Where did they all go? They didnt go. They were pushed into the streets to survive. Pimps, drug dealers, confidence scammers, strong-arm robbers, gangsters, and identity thieves became the order of the day. Time is running out! The same thousands upon thousands of our wayward teenagers, gangsters, ex-prisoners, and young adults are falling through the cracks. Baby-killing spirits, seducing spirits, spirits of witchcraft, and spirits of divination are operating without walls in the metropolitan areas of the United States. This is of great concern to all saved people. We all recognize it, speak of it, and desire to do something about it. The task to overcome is so great we dont know where to begin! Some has even given up, referring to it as the Signs of the Times. We continue to do our church thing. We continue to do our televangelists thing. We continue to do our international thing. We continue to strive for bigness. All of these is vitally important and must continue. But more is needed that speaks directly to gangsters, wayward teens, ex-prisoners, and young adults. More effort is needed to get their souls saved. If they come during the street ministrys call, thats great. We say we love you. But we will not call you directly to be saved.

Book excerpt: Two names reigned supreme in London's underworld in the sixties - Ronnie and Reggie Kray; and it wasn't until 1969 that the twins went down at Brixton Prison for murder. I was only seventeen, on remand up in Risley, Warrington, for nicking a furniture lorry. Most of the lads in there had newspaper photos of the Krays stuck up on their cell walls. They were the cream of the criminal crop, and that's why I took such an interest in 'em. Once I was put away, it wasn't long before I got to meet them, and over the next 29 years I got closer to the Krays than any self-proclaimed henchman, any autograph hunter. As their trusted friend they let me in on it all - no holds barred behind bars! Since Ronnie and Reggie died, all I've heard is a load of bollocks! 'Reggie shot my cat; Ronnie stabbed my uncle Bert 75 times; Reggie ran over my hamster; I'm Ronnie's son, I'm Reggie's daughter.' Gutless maggots spreading rumours with their sham stories for sale. The shameless rats. Well now the twins are gone and I can talk. And let me tell you, I've got a lot to say and all the time in the world to say it. No bollocks. No silly stories. Just the facts about the time I spent doing porridge with the Krays.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Both Dylan and Cohen have been a presence on the music and poetry landscape spanning six decades. This book begins with a discussion of their contemporary importance, and how they have sustained their enduring appeal as performers and recording artists. The authors argue that both Dylan and Cohen shared early aspirations that mirrored the Beat Generation. They sought to achieve the fame of Dylan Thomas, who proved a bohemian poet could thrive outside the academy, and to live his life of unconditional social irresponsibility. While Dylan's and Cohen's fame fluctuated over the decades, it was sustained by self-consciously adopted personas used to distance themselves from their public selves. This separation of self requires an exploration of the artists' relation to religion as an avenue to find and preserve inner identity. The relationship between their lyrics and poetry is explored in the context of Federico García Lorca's concept of the poetry of inspiration and the emotional depths of 'duende.' Such ideas draw upon the dislocation of the mind and the liberation of the senses that so struck Dylan and Cohen when they first read the poetry and letters of Arthur Rimbaud and Lorca. The authors show that performance and the poetry are integral, and the 'duende,' or passion, of the delivery, is inseparable from the lyric or poetry, and common to Dylan, Cohen and the Beat Generation.
