Book excerpt: Have you ever been perplexed about your dreams and wondered if they have any significant meanings? Have you ever known someone who has been able to interpret the meanings of dreams and visions, especially those of spiritual nature? Within the pages of this book you can gain valuable insight into the meaning of dreams and visions, through the life experiences of the author as he traverses the reader with him through some of his surprising, heartrending, soul searching, but yet totally enlightening experiences. The author, through his personal encounters with dreams and visions, of seemingly other kinds, escorts the reader from the days of his early childhood, across the pages of his life into latter years, when some of those prophetic dreams were actually fulfilled. Carl Adams is a Retired Navy Logistics Specialist, with 35 years of service. He has also served in the Army Reserve and the Air Force Reserve. He served aboard the Aircraft Carrier USS Independence, and was also an Aerial Gunner with the 711th Special Operations Squadron. He has spent the last nearly ten years very involved in jail and prison ministry, leading many men and women to the Lord Jesus Christ. His ministry currently spans into eight different correctional institutions in the State of Ohio. He teaches a Life Skills Mentoring Class to prison inmates at the Madison Prison in London, Ohio. In that same City of London at the London Prison, he is also an Inmate Mentor, where he assists inmates scheduled for release, to integrate their lives back into the mainstream of society. His ministry also includes ministering to men on Death Row within the State of Ohio, being an Associate Chaplain with the County Jail Juvenile Detention Center in Springfield, Ohio, and being a Chaplain with the Church of God Chaplains Commission.

Book excerpt: A new Young Adult Western, by acclaimed Western author W.R. Benton. In Dream Catcher, wiley mountain men Jed and Mule decide to swindle some local Indians by trading doctored-whiskey for beaver plews. The scheme has mixed results, and they wind up rescuing a black man named George. Attempting to stop a brewing war threat by the Sioux, the Army asks the mountain men to embark on a dangerous mission and return two Indian women captives to their tribe on the wild Plains. Unknown to the two mountain men, the native women are the wife and daughter of the Sioux chief, Bull Buffalo. Returning the captives and keeping their own skins intact is no easy task. Having never seen a black man, and due to his ‘raven-color’ skin, the Sioux consider George a buffalo god in human form, and during the mission to broker peace, George discovers a side of himself that he was unaware existed. Mule becomes emotionally invested in the well-being of both the Sioux captives and eventually forms a romantic connection to one of the women. The action is non-stop as the two mountain men join forces with the Sioux to battle a group of Buffalo-hide hunters set to slaughter the herds, no matter the cost. Suitable for Ages: 14 and up CONTENT CONTAINS: realistic depictions of frontier violence and death. Keywords: Hawken,Sioux, buffalo, spirit guide, the people, mountain man, knife

Book excerpt: In books such as Mystics and Messiahs, Hidden Gospels, and The Next Christendom, Philip Jenkins has established himself as a leading commentator on religion and society. Now, in Dream Catchers, Jenkins offers a brilliant account of the changing mainstream attitudes towards Native American spirituality, once seen as degraded spectacle, now hailed as New Age salvation. Jenkins charts this remarkable change by highlighting the complex history of white American attitudes towards Native religions, considering everything from the 19th-century American obsession with "Hebrew Indians" and Lost Tribes, to the early 20th-century cult of the Maya as bearers of the wisdom of ancient Atlantis. He looks at the popularity of the Carlos Castaneda books, the writings of Lynn Andrews and Frank Waters, and explores New Age paraphernalia including dream-catchers, crystals, medicine bags, and Native-themed Tarot cards. He also examines the controversial New Age appropriation of Native sacred places and notes that many "white indians" see mainstream society as religiously empty. An engrossing account of our changing attitudes towards Native spirituality, Dream Catchers offers a fascinating introduction to one of the more interesting aspects of contemporary American religion.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In her highly anticipated memoir, Margaret A. Salinger writes about life with her famously reclusive father, J.D. Salinger—offering a rare look into the man and the myth, what it is like to be his daughter, and the effect of such a charismatic figure on the girls and women closest to him. With generosity and insight, Ms. Salinger has written a book that is eloquent, spellbinding, and wise, yet at the same time retains the intimacy of a novel. Her story chronicles an almost cultlike environment of extreme isolation and early neglect interwoven with times of laughter, joy, and dazzling beauty. Compassionately exploring the complex dynamics of family relationships, her story is one that seeks to come to terms with the dark parts of her life that, quite literally, nearly killed her, and to pass on a life-affirming heritage to her own child. The story of being a Salinger is unique; the story of being a daughter is universal. This book appeals to anyone, J.D. Salinger fan or no, who has ever had to struggle to sort out who she really is from whom her parents dreamed she might be.
