Book excerpt: Life's Too Short meets The Unhoneymooners in this sparkling, steamy, and swoon-worthy novel from #1 New York Times bestselling author Rachel Van Dyken, in which two sworn enemies must share house, home—and maybe their hearts—when they become co-parents after a sudden loss. Colby's living her best life: as a popular food blogger, she gets to fulfill her dreams of exploring the globe. But her world comes crashing down when a tragic accident leaves her co-guardian of her best friend's two adorable children. Not only does she need to put down roots—fast—but she'll be sharing custody with the one man she can't stand sharing a continent with, let alone a house. Accountant-extraordinaire Rip values rules and plans. But when he loses his sister and his best friend and becomes an insta-guardian all in one night, Rip sees his organized life imploding. What he really doesn't need is his sister's irresponsible, flighty—albeit kind and gorgeous—best friend making it worse. Rip doesn't trust Colby to take their new responsibilities seriously, while Colby can't believe Rip thinks children will thrive under his rigid control. Yet soon Rip and Colby discover they need each other more than they hate each other. Could it be possible that following their hearts is just what their new little family needs?

Book excerpt: Between A.D. 200 and 1000, sponsorship at baptism evolved from a simple liturgical act into a mechanism for the creation of enduring relationships regarded as especially holy forms of kinship. Combining anthropological, historical, theological, and literary approaches, Joseph Lynch presents a comprehensive analysis of the origins and development in Western society of this "spiritual" kinship. Because of its solemnity and adaptability, such kinship gradually took its place alongside blood and marital ties as a fundamental part of medieval society, continuing to expand in high and late medieval Europe and to flourish even in modern times, particularly in Latin America. Professor Lynch traces the liturgical practices and theological beliefs undergirding sponsorship and examines its social purposes, including sacralization of personal firendships, creation of client/patron reltionships, extension of marital taboos, provision of protectors for the young, fostering of trust among adults, and dissemination of religious instruction. In the process he offers a rich array of insights into the Church's role in the passage of Western society from antiquity to the Middle Ages. Joseph H. Lynch is Professor of History and former Director of the Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies at Ohio State University. He is author of Simoniacal Entry into Religious Life form 1000 to 1260: A Social, Economic and Legal Study (Ohio State). Originally published in 1986. In this very special collection he invites us to share in fifteen letters to sent to his godson, Laurence Wells. Each letter, sent on the anniversary of Laurence’s baptism every year, distills years of self-reflection and religious thinking into heartfelt notes packed with wit, warmth and verve. The letters explore what makes a happy, fulfilled life: kindness, courage, humility, joy, friendship, simplicity, humour, generosity and faith. An introduction by Samuel Wells—Laurence’s father—tells the story behind these letters and offers insight into being a godparent.

Book excerpt: “I used to be a lesbian.” In Gay Girl, Good God, author Jackie Hill Perry shares her own story, offering practical tools that helped her in the process of finding wholeness. Jackie grew up fatherless and experienced gender confusion. She embraced masculinity and homosexuality with every fiber of her being. She knew that Christians had a lot to say about all of the above. But was she supposed to change herself? How was she supposed to stop loving women, when homosexuality felt more natural to her than heterosexuality ever could? At age nineteen, Jackie came face-to-face with what it meant to be made new. And not in a church, or through contact with Christians. God broke in and turned her heart toward Him right in her own bedroom in light of His gospel. Read in order to understand. Read in order to hope. Or read in order, like Jackie, to be made new.

Book excerpt: Reveal God to your children by parenting them like He parents us. Tired of all the parenting books full of strategic checklists, how-to advice, and quick tips? Instead of focusing on parenting techniques, Like Our Father is about who God is, who we are in light of that, and how God's character gives form to our parenting. Christina Fox invites you to explore the Scriptures and discover the goodness of the God who makes us His own. As God's beloved creatures, we bear His image--that is, we reflect Him to others. Is anything more important to pass on to our children than this? Though it's tempting to want an instructional manual on child-rearing, what you really need is a grander vision of your Heavenly Father. As your kids share in your magnified vision of God, they'll begin to live as the image-bearers that He made them to be.

Often godparents arrive from out of town or state. The parents themselves move more often today than ever before in our society. With this book you will cover the theological basics of baptism and the spiritual life in a way that is simple and friendly without being simplistic or condescending. The spiritual basis of the book is suited to the busy couples that the church sees coming for their spiritual nurture and the baptism of their children. The content of this book will not scare off these couples -- parents and godparents -- returning to their church. Peter C. Garrison is pastor of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Burlingame, California. His previously published CSS books are Pastoral Pitfalls and Witnesses To The Cross.

Book Synopsis God the Parent by : Nate Davis

Download or read book God the Parent written by Nate Davis and published by . This book was released on 2017-08-18 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biblically Thorough God the Parent is an easy-reading, orderly account of God's example of parenting. The book is thorough, referring to about 900 Old and New Testament passages related to parenting! The author, Nate Davis, is a father of 10, student of the Bible and one who loves God. Not satisfied with parenting books that use a verse here or there, he studied and wrote for the better part of a decade to expound the biblical basis for good parenting. His application is practical and his conclusion is simple: "Be imitators of God, therefore, as dearly loved children" (Ephesians 5:1, NIV). Principles Parents Can Apply God the Parent is not a "system" for child training but a discovery of biblical principles on which parents can build. The book considers these questions: * From God's perspective, why is parenting important? * According to the Bible, what goals should parents have for their children? * What is the best way for parents to relate to their children when there is a question of moral conduct? * How can parents encourage their family to trust God? * How does a child's heart affect his behavior? Can parents rely on a heart made new? * How and why did God make rules? How can parents imitate him in rule making? * What are parents to do about bad behavior? Should parents discipline? If so, what does that look like? * How do parents prepare their children for future obedience? * How do parents reason with their children? The goal is not to have independent, self-reliant or successful children. The aim is not to have children who follow a set of rules, who have learned about Christianity and who appear to comply. The goal is for children to know, trust, love and submit to the Spirit of the Living God. Jesus said, "I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing" (John 15:5, NIV). God's aim is that children would fellowship with the Spirit of Jesus in such a way that they do what he wants. The uniqueness of that goal requires that parents employ principles recorded in the pages of the Bible. In your pursuit of that endeavor, God the Parent will be a valuable resource. Back Cover: The best way to be a truly successful parent is to forget results and instead adore, obey and imitate God the Parent. He left us an example to follow. When we consider the ways he acted parent-like, the following themes recur: 1. Trust: God started by building trust. 2. Judging: God was king, and he used judges to uphold his rules. 3. Heart: Instead of mere compliance, God's goal was to change hearts. 4. Rules: God made rules and established them through repetition. 5. Discipline: God used loss and hardship in the process of changing hearts. 6. Testing: God tested to evaluate obedience. 7. Reasoning: God urged careful obedience, reasoning that it was the best way of life. These are the starting principles for good parenting, and they point to the good news of a new life in Jesus. With hundreds of Bible references, God the Parent walks moms and dads through these truths.
