Book excerpt: Goddess Oracle Cards of Ke 'Ala Ke Akua is a 65-Card Deck and a 120-page guidebook, created from the original thangka paintings and hand-pulled silkscreen prints of Japanese-American artist, Mayumi Oda, b. 1941. The thangka paintings represent the Major Arcana, which are numbered from 0 to 22 in the deck. These images are archetypes that were painted during the author's anti-nuclear and peace activities when the people of the world were experiencing strong emotions. The images reflect the consciousness of the human mind. They bring the unconscious emotions to surface. In Tarot Card reading, Major Arcana cards represent the journey the journey and life lessons told through the eyes of a Fool (The Fool's Journey). The Minor Arcana cards, numbered from 23 through 64, are selected from nearly 500 of Mayumi's silkscreen prints. and express her own personal challenges and liberation. They were conversations with herself and how she dealt with the world's changes. Now, more than ever, during such fearful times, the hope is that the cards will talk to you in their own way and inspire you to live your life in full beauty. The cards and book are presented with a unique spread cloth reproduced from Mayumi's silkscreen titled Mandala and stored inside a hinged box with gold foil decal.
Book Synopsis Unwritten Literature of Hawaii by : Nathaniel Bright Emerson
Download or read book Unwritten Literature of Hawaii written by Nathaniel Bright Emerson and published by Sanzani Edizioni. This book was released on 2024-02-04 with total page 573 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As in many other traditional cultures, Hawaiian art, dance, music and poetry were highly integrated into every aspect of life, to a degree far beyond that of industrial society. The poetry at the core of the Hula is extremely sophisticated. Typically a Hula song has several dimensions: mythological aspects, cultural implications, an ecological setting, and in many cases, (although Emerson is reluctant to acknowledge this) frank erotic imagery. The extensive footnotes and background information allow us an unprecedented look into these deeper layers. While Emerson's translations are not great poetry, they do serve as a literal English guide to the amazing Hawaiian lyrics.

Book Synopsis Essentials of Shinto by : Stuart Picken
Download or read book Essentials of Shinto written by Stuart Picken and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 1994-11-22 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shinto is finally receiving the attention it deserves as a fundamental component of Japanese culture. Nevertheless, it remains a remarkably complex and elusive phenomenon to which Western categories of religion do not readily apply. A knowledge of Shinto can only proceed from a basic understanding of Japanese shrines and civilization, for it is closely intermingled with the Japanese way of life and continues to be a vital natural religion. This book is a convenient guide to Shinto thought. As a reference work, the volume does not offer a detailed critical study of all aspects of Shinto. Instead, it overviews the essential teachings of Shinto and provides the necessary cultural and historical context for understanding Shinto as a dynamic force in Japanese civilization. The book begins with an historical overview of Shinto, followed by a discussion of Japanese myths. The volume then discusses the role of shrines, which are central to Shinto rituals. Other portions of the book discuss the various Shinto sects and the evolution of Shinto from the Heian period to the present. Because Japanese terms are central to Shinto, the work includes a glossary.
