Book excerpt: Central to God’s character is the quality of holiness. Yet, even so, most people are hard-pressed to define what God’s holiness precisely is. Many preachers today avoid the topic altogether because people today don’t quite know what to do with words like “awe” or “fear.” R. C. Sproul, in this classic work, puts the holiness of God in its proper and central place in the Christian life. He paints an awe-inspiring vision of God that encourages Christian to become holy just as God is holy. Once you encounter the holiness of God, your life will never be the same.

Book excerpt: Life’s painful trials can bring shame about our inadequate and broken faith. There is relief in hearing the expressions of desperation in the psalmist’s voice. He didn’t experience this life perfected, and we don’t either. But the psalmist was loved. So are we. God was so kind to give us the Psalms. To walk through darkened days is part of the human experience. To walk through them with faith, comfort, strength, joy, and hope is part of the divine experience. Our eyes, though, are often clouded to those blessings by the thing oppressing us. When we remember and recognize our Father’s faithfulness, when we see reality with the eyes of understanding, the darkness ebbs and the light of hope grows. The impossible, unbearable, and unthinkable becomes the hidden passageway to truth, hope, and joy in Christ. These letters were originally written as encouragement to a friend when the darkness began to overtake his path. Each day for 22 days, a letter arrived with one of the eight-verse sections from Psalm 119 along with a small thought to bring light and hope and to be a reminder that we do not fight our battles alone. The letters, along with nine more devotions on the subject of experiencing God in the dark, make up this powerful, honest, hope-filled 31-day devotional.

Book excerpt: We know how the story begins. Now take a fresh look at Gods first recorded words. And God said, Let there be light, and there was light (Genesis 1:3). In John 8:12, Jesus said, I am the light of the world. This light goes on forever, just as the love of God never ends. Follow the Light links the first words God spoke in the Bible to the experiences of Gods people and the teachings of Jesus Christ. Delve into an exploration of the Scriptures, considering all the ways that light is a metaphor for God, His Kingdom, and His infinite love. Created for individuals and small groups, Follow the Light examines Gods presence in various forms of light, and uses numerous scriptural references to show us that the presence of our Heavenly Father is all around us. This eight-week study is divided into personal, daily assignments along with suggested prayer topics to encourage regular conversations with our Heavenly Father. The final chapter is designed as a self-reflection tool and offers suggestions to develop a rich and fulfilling prayer life. As you complete this Bible study, and contemplate on the glory of Gods Word and the vastness of His creation, you will begin to feel our Heavenly Fathers constant presence and visibility in your life. and there was beautiful, life-giving, and loving light.

Does Hawaiian culture and religion just come from the Kapu System where there was death with no mercy or grace for those who broke kapu (taboos), like death for men and women who ate together? If so, where did Aloha come from? The volume of evidence in this book for the existence of one benevolent Creator God of Aloha in Polynesia is overwhelming. This book contains the first volume of combined evidence of this God throughout Hawaiʻi and Polynesia. Daniel Kikawa, Ph.D. (Intercultural Studies)

Book excerpt: According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love: Having predestined us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ himself, according to the good pleasure of his will, To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved. In whom we have redemption through his blood, forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace. (Ephesians 1:4-7) This is the meaning of the parable: The seed is the word of God. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Earthly man does not always understand the revelations of the Word; it is therefore sometimes necessary to use metaphors or parables as Jesus did when teaching the Jews about the kingdom of God. In the same vein, this dissertation uses the metaphor of a light bulb that can emanate light""when plugged into an electrical source""to the light that shines from God. Going further with this metaphor, the "light bulb of God" takes its energy from the Lord himself as it shines in the lives of everyone who believes in God. Light is used to show the way, as roads, airport runways, and stations are lit to facilitate easier traveling to humans. Light, as humans know it, was only possible after electricity was discovered. Caldwell stated that in New York, "by the late 1870's electric light was no longer a novelty, though the city didn't get its first consumer power grid until eight-teen eighty-two." The city put electrical lights to good use as the New York Train System lit up the tracks twenty-four hours a day""this provided an indication of the way the train would go. This was considered light that would guide the way for so many people travelling the city. This train line pointing to the way people should go can be seen as a metaphor for The Way in a biblical sense. There are people who do not know or believe that the first light was God's light.
