Book excerpt: Rugby with the stunning Fiji team not only gave me the opportunity to experience diversity in the highest form but inspired me to share my experiences living in Fiji a paradise and well known tourist destination once known as the way the world should be also sharing my experiences living in the USA the most prosperous powerful nation on Earth, while having a blast in one of the most vibrant cities of the world, Las Vegas. Growing up as a child on a copra plantations owned by part European families I lived a fun and exciting life with some challenges and was influenced by the European culture and their language and religion A year at high school in an Indian dominated society saw me struggling to adapt to this environment attending high school with students mainly ancestors of the indentured laborers who were very competitive which made me strive for higher standards through discipline. My personality allowed me to connect with people easily and the opportunity to take part in a carnival gave me exposure not only to be in the public eye but to enhance my leadership skills and to meet with prominent people including the governor general of Fiji Ratu Sir Penaia Ganilau who later became the president of the country. Anthony Robbins the world known motivator and owner of the exclusive Namale plantation resort who I met personally inspired me to improve the quality of my communication through his book unlimited power which helped me to deal with many sensitive issues like depression, death and suicide and gave me the power to be a great leader by having a great bonding power that helped me to connect with my people to bring the best out of them. The life at an exclusive world known 5 star resort gave me the opportunity to meet the famous world environmentalist Jean Michael Cousteau and to get a taste of luxury and pampering and also to experience the hospitality of the Fijian people who are dedicated to providing outstanding service with a personal touch making Fiji one of the best tourist destinations of the world. Destiny and a true love story brought me to the USA the land of hope exposing me to a quality of life with high standards and gave me an understanding of the American dream which is about owning your own home while learning to adapt to a new environment and family and a career in banking, Recognition which is a key element in this society saw me with a gold medal presented in Hawaii for my outstanding sales and customer service skills giving me a chance to be part of a royal celebration of excellence and then becoming one of the leaders of the bank managing in a dynamic and changing environment. My inspiring management style helped me to overcome many challenges including managing people through so much change in an economy that was constantly declining and a massive lay off and with the so many opportunities out there I am now going to think a big picture, take a different route to break new ground and will find a whole new world to conquer.
Book Synopsis Deconstructing Ergativity by : Maria Polinsky
Download or read book Deconstructing Ergativity written by Maria Polinsky and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nominative-accusative and ergative are two common alignment types found across languages. In the former type, the subject of an intransitive verb and the subject of a transitive verb are expressed the same way, and differently from the object of a transitive. In ergative languages, the subject of an intransitive and the object of a transitive appear in the same form, the absolutive, and the transitive subject has a special, ergative, form. Ergative languages often follow very different patterns, thus evading a uniform description and analysis. A simple explanation for that has to do with the idea that ergative languages, much as their nominative-accusative counterparts, do not form a uniform class. In this book, Maria Polinsky argues that ergative languages instantiate two main types, the one where the ergative subject is a prepositional phrase (PP-ergatives) and the one with a noun-phrase ergative. Each type is internally consistent and is characterized by a set of well-defined properties. The book begins with an analysis of syntactic ergativity, which as Polinsky argues, is a manifestation of the PP-ergative type. Polinsky discusses diagnostic properties that define PPs in general and then goes to show that a subset of ergative expressions fit the profile of PPs. Several alternative analyses have been proposed to account for syntactic ergativity; the book presents and outlines these analyses and offers further considerations in support of the PP-ergativity approach. The book then discusses the second type, DP-ergative languages, and traces the diachronic connection between the two types. The book includes two chapters illustrating paradigm PP-ergative and DP-ergative languages: Tongan and Tsez. The data used in these descriptions come from Polinsky's original fieldwork hence presenting new empirical facts from both languages.
Download or read book Fiji written by Daryl Tarte and published by ANU Press. This book was released on 2014-11-11 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few people have been in the unique position of being able to observe and record the dramatic changes that have taken place in the islands of Fiji over the past 80 years than fourth-generation citizen, Daryl Tarte. He writes emotively, in great detail, about his personal experience of growing up on a remote island during the colonial era, when races were segregated, and white people lived an elite existence. Following independence, he has been personally involved with many of the key economic, political and social activities that have evolved and enabled the nation to progress during the 20th century. These include the sugar industry, tourism, commerce and industry, religion, the media, women and of course, the coups. His observations into the complexities of leadership in these areas of national development are fascinating and perceptive. Much of the story is told through the eyes of the many people of all races with whom he has interacted. Fiji is made up of over 300 unique islands. Tarte has been to many of them, and in a final chapter he gives an insightful commentary of how different they all are.

Book Synopsis Law, Justice, and Empire by : Bridget Brereton
Download or read book Law, Justice, and Empire written by Bridget Brereton and published by University of the West Indies Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Colonial Career of John Gorrie is a biographical study of Sir John Gorrie, a Scottish lawyer, who served as a judge and as chief justice in several multi-racial British colonies (Mauritius, Fiji, the Leeward Islands, Trinidad and Tobago) in the second half of the nineteenth century. Holding radical political and social views, especially a conviction that persons of all ethnic and class backgrounds should enjoy equal justice under the British crown, he was a controversial jurist who inspired both bitter opposition from colonial elites and intense admiration from the 'subject races' in each place he served...A maverick official of the British Crown, Gorrie tried to use his judicial office to secure justice and protection for ex-slaves, indentured labourers, indigenous peoples and other nonwhite groups in the empire. Law, Justice and Empire is an original contribution to the comparative history of the nineteenth century British empire, as well as to the history of the Caribbean, Mauritius and Fiji in that period. It extends our understanding of the empire and how it was administered.

Book Synopsis A Grammar of Boumaa Fijian by : R. M. W. Dixon
Download or read book A Grammar of Boumaa Fijian written by R. M. W. Dixon and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1988-10-31 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The people who live in the Boumaa region of the Fijian island of Taveuni speak a dialect of Fijian that is mutually intelligible with Standard Fijian, the two differing as much perhaps as do the American and British varieties of English. During 1985, R. M. W. Dixon—one of the most insightful of linguists engaged in descriptive studies today—lived in the village of Waitabu and studied the language spoken there. He found in Boumaa Fijian a wealth of striking features unknown in commonly studied languages and on the basis of his fieldwork prepared this grammar. Fijian is an agglutinating language, one in which words are formed by the profligate combining of morphemes. There are no case inflections, and tense and aspect as shown by independent clitics or words within a predicate complex. Most verbs come in both transitive and intransitive forms, and nouns can be build up regularly from verbal parts and verbs from nouns. The language is also marked by a highly developed pronoun system and by a vocabulary rich in areas of social significance. In the opening chapters, Dixon describes the Islands' political, social, and linguistic organization, outlines the main points of Fijian phonology, and presents an overview of the grammar. In succeeding chapters, he examines a number of grammatical topics in greater detail, including clause and phrase structure, verbal syntax, deictics, and anaphora. The volume also includes a full vocabulary of all forms treated in discussion and three of the fifteen texts recorded from monolingual village elders on which the grammar is based.

Download or read book Paradise Past written by Robert W. Kirk and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2012-11-08 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 400 years from Magellan's entrance into Pacific waters to 1920, the lives of the people of the South Pacific were utterly transformed. Exotic diseases from Europe and America, particularly the worldwide influenza pandemic, were deadly for islanders. Ardent missionaries changed the belief systems and lives of nearly all Polynesians, Aborigines, and those Papuans and Melanesians living in areas accessible to westerners. By 1920 every island and atoll in the South Seas had been claimed as a colony or protectorate of a power such as Britain, France or the United States. Factors aiding this imperial sweep included European outposts such as Sydney, advances in maritime technology, the work of missionaries, a desire to profit from the area's relatively sparse resources, and international rivalry that led to the scramble for colonies. The coming of westerners, as this book points out, was not entirely negative, as head-hunting, cannibalism, chronic warfare, human sacrifice, and other practices were diminished--but whole cultures were irreversibly changed or even eradicated.
