Virginia WoolfGlyn Philpot (1884-1937) was a portrait, figure and still-life painter and a sculptor. One of the most financially successful portrait painters of his generation, he achieved early prominence in both Britain and America. Philpot was a senior public figure who embodied deep personal contradictions. In 1933 at the age of 49, he submitted The Great Pan to the Royal Academy. The painting made explicit what had for so long been a coded language within homosexual writing and art and the artist suffered the ignominy of public rejection. The young Glyn Philpot circulated in the close company of the Edwardian aesthetes. Portraits financed his more committed work on subject pictures. In the Symbolist tradition, they reflect his deepest concerns: religious themes reveal a profound knowledge of his adopted Catholicism, while an increasing interest in the male nude and a series of superb portraits of young men, his black servants, models, friends and lovers, show the gradual public expression of his homosexuality. The tensions between his public and personal lives led Philpot to spend long periods outside Britain. In 1931, he visited Berlin. His encounter with that city's homosexual underworld had a profound spiritual and emotional effect and Philpot adopted a new style which owed much to international modernism.Philpot's new style was greeted with overt hostility. The scandal led to a period of acute financial hardship which undoubtedly contributed to the artist's early death at 53. Tragically, Philpot did not live long enough to see what he regarded as his most ambitious work accepted or approved. His reputation as a portraitist never faltered, but his subject pictures remain controversial. In 1985, the National Portrait Gallery, London staged a major retrospective of his work.In this fascinating account of an artist whose career bridged the transition between Edwardian aestheticism and international modernism, Paul Delaney has skilfully brought together disparate elements to reveal the personal, social and artistic crises that transformed Glyn Philpot's work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An exploration of women?s contributions to visual culture in major urban centres between the wars (1918-1939), this collection sheds new light on women?s relationships with the processes of modernism and modernization. Women?s work in a variety of mediums is explored, including design, print, illustration, murals, poster art, and costume design, as well as more conventional forms of painting and sculpture. International in scope, the volume discusses artists and exhibitions from the United Kingdom, Greece, Mexico, France, Ireland and the United States. The contributors place a strong emphasis on archival research yet each addresses contemporary concerns in feminist art history. By focusing on a very specific time period, the essays place a central concern on the history and theory of art and gender and are united by their coherent focus on women?s role in the agency and mediation of artistic production in the interwar period.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "British artist Eric Kennington (1888-1960) was a highly regarded stone carver, whose achievements were ranked in the 1920s and 1930s alongside those of his contemporaries Jacob Epstein, Eric Gill and Frank Dobson. His work has since fallen into neglect: Jonathan Black attributes this unjust neglect to Kennington's position between sculptural traditionalists and avant-garde artists in England." "Kennington was an Official War Artist in the First World War, and carved a number of war memorials in the 1920s. His later work is characterised by public architectural sculpture carved directly into the exterior surface of a building, and his public commissions include five relief panels for the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre, Stratford upon Avon (1930-2); models/plans for the Pan American Columbus Memorial Lighthouse, Santo Domingo (1930-4); and the stone relief for the Harold Cohen Memorial Library, University of Liverpool (1937-8). During the last fifteen years of his life, Kennington concentrated on producing works for the interiors of churches." "The Sculpture of Eric Kennington includes the first complete catalogue of the artist's sculpture, and an essay which sets the work in the wider context of twentieth-century British art."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc.
