Book excerpt: At the dawn of the 1970s, waves of hopeful idealists abandoned the city and headed for the country, convinced that a better life awaited. They were full of dreams, mostly lacking in practical skills, and soon utterly out of money. But they knew paradise when they saw it. When Loraine, Craig, Pancake, Hershe, and a dozen of their friends came into possession of 116 acres in Vermont, they had big plans: to grow their own food, build their own shelter, and create an enlightened community. They had little idea that at the same moment, all over the country, a million other young people were making the same move -- back to the land. We Are As Gods follows the Myrtle Hill commune as its members enjoy a euphoric Free Love summer. Nearby, a fledgling organic farm sets to work with horses, and a couple -- the author's parents -- attempts to build a geodesic dome. Yet Myrtle Hill's summer ends in panic as they rush to build shelter while they struggle to reconcile their ideals with the somber realities of physical hardship and shifting priorities -- especially when one member goes dangerously rogue. Kate Daloz has written a meticulously researched testament to the dreams of a generation disillusioned by their parents' lifestyles, scarred by the Vietnam War, and yearning for rural peace. Shaping everything from our eating habits to the Internet, the 1970s Back-to-the-Land movement is one of the most influential yet least understood periods in recent history. We Are As Gods sheds light on one generation's determination to change their own lives and, in the process, to change the world.
Book Synopsis Something Abides: Discovering the Civil War in Today's Vermont by : Howard Coffin
Download or read book Something Abides: Discovering the Civil War in Today's Vermont written by Howard Coffin and published by The Countryman Press. This book was released on 2013-05-06 with total page 1092 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the help of this book, Civil War sites can be located as in no other state, taking the reader through the beautiful Vermont landscape of hill farms and small towns that looks more like the Civil War era than that of any other state. Years after the Civil War, Oliver Wendell Holmes spoke for his fellow Civil War veterans when he said, "In our youth, our hearts were touched by fire." Today, throughout Vermont, it is possible to identify hundreds and hundreds of Civil War-related sites. Throughout Vermont are soldier homes, halls where war meetings encouraged enlistments, churches where soldier funerals were held and abolitionists spoke, monuments to those who served, hospital sites, and homes where women gathered to make items for the soldiers. The Vermont State House is a virtual Civil War museum. A building survives in Woodstock where the war was administered. Cemeteries hold the gravestones of many of the 34,000 who fought. A field even exists where in 1803 a Quaker preacher heard a voice from above fortell a bloody war over slavery. With the help of this book, Civil War sites can be located as in no other state, taking the reader through the beautiful Vermont landscape of hill farms and small towns that looks more like the Civil War era than that of any other state.

Book Synopsis Thomas Naylor’s Paths to Peace by : William L. Benzon
Download or read book Thomas Naylor’s Paths to Peace written by William L. Benzon and published by Wheatmark, Inc.. This book was released on 2019-03-12 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A small-state world would not only solve the problems of social brutality and war; it would solve the problems of oppression and tyranny. It would solve all problems arising from power." — Leopold Kohr, Breakdown of Nations This insight was Thomas Naylor's lodestone; it informed and animated everything he did. Primarily an economist -- who taught at Duke University, University of Wisconsin, Middlebury College, and the University of Vermont -- he had also been a businessman, running a small software firm, advising corporations and governments in over thirty countries, an activity that lead him to predict the political upheavals of the Soviet Union. He moved to Vermont in 1990 in search of a human-scale community, which he found, and a decade later founded the Second Vermont Republic, which advocated Vermont secession from the USA to become an independent state, which it had been from 1777 to 1791. Time magazine named the Second Vermont Republic as one of the “Top 10 Aspiring Nations” in the world as recently as 2011. Are you curious about how the twenty-six Swiss cantons support local autonomy and direct democracy in this small nation with four official languages? Did you know that the world is afire with secession movements? What about an organization in which the small nations of the world band together as a counterweight to the unproductive, and often destructive, activities of the "Big Powers" (e.g. Russia in Chechnya, China in Tibet and Xinjiang Province, US in Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Yemen and so many other countries)? Thomas Naylor's Paths to Peace addresses these topics and includes a long interview in which Naylor places his ideas and activism in the context of his life. A fond eulogy by Kirkpatrick Sale and a foreword and afterward by Charlie Keil place Naylor's life and work in a larger context.
