Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Asbury Park's diverse array of landmarks creates an unforgettable impression of this legendary seaside city. They tell the story of its past, present and even future. The elegant, Art Deco-inspired Convention Hall captures the resort's glittering heyday in the 1920s and '30s, while structures like the Upstage seem to echo with the voices of aspiring musicians like Bruce Springsteen when they played at intimate venues, defining Asbury's world-renowned music scene. As the city forges ahead with ambitious redevelopment plans, many neglected buildings have been rehabilitated, but others continue to deteriorate, despite a groundswell of public opposition. From opulent movie houses to down-and-dirty rock-and-roll clubs, these landmarks trace the evolution of Asbury Park from a tiny nineteenth-century resort town to the world-famous playground of today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Religion and liberty are often thought to be mutual enemies: if religion has a natural ally, it is authoritarianism--not republicanism or democracy. But in this book, Maurizio Viroli, a leading historian of republican political thought, challenges this conventional wisdom. He argues that political emancipation and the defense of political liberty have always required the self-sacrifice of people with religious sentiments and a religious devotion to liberty. This is particularly the case when liberty is threatened by authoritarianism: the staunchest defenders of liberty are those who feel a deeply religious commitment to it. Viroli makes his case by reconstructing, for the first time, the history of the Italian "religion of liberty," covering its entire span but focusing on three key examples of political emancipation: the free republics of the late Middle Ages, the Risorgimento of the nineteenth century, and the antifascist Resistenza of the twentieth century. In each example, Viroli shows, a religious spirit that regarded moral and political liberty as the highest goods of human life was fundamental to establishing and preserving liberty. He also shows that when this religious sentiment has been corrupted or suffocated, Italians have lost their liberty. This book makes a powerful and provocative contribution to today's debates about the compatibility of religion and republicanism.

Book excerpt: After living in Hell for a year, I might have to amend the saying “Hell is other people” to “Hell is other people’s family.” Specifically, my dear demon husband’s family, AKA my infernal in-laws. Even more specifically, Lucifer, my grandfather-in-law. In a revelation surprising exactly no one, Lucifer really is a mean-spirited, nefarious, hateful mothertrucker, and for reasons beyond my control, I am bound to him with a vow of silence about a juicy little secret he’s been keeping—from Azazel, my beloved demonic spouse. Which puts me between a rock and a hard place, and I don’t mean between the wall and Azazel’s magnificently muscled torso. That one, I wouldn’t mind. I’m notoriously bad at keeping secrets. Given the non-existent filter between my brain and my mouth, no one’s more impressed than me that I haven’t spilled the beans to Azazel yet. I can only credit the paralyzing fear of what Lucifer would do to me if I broke my vow to him. But I’m just barely keeping it together here. All it would take for me to crack is a crisis that short-circuits my brain and I’d probably sing like a canary. Thank goodness my life is boring AF and nothing ever happens here in Hell to throw me off kilter. Oh, wait… *** Author’s Note: Till Heaven Do Us Part is the second installment in the Infernal Covenant trilogy. This book ends in a cliffhanger, for which the author is really sorry.* Book 3 will likely be released in early 2024. Book excerpt: Keep your friends close and your enemies closer still… The war with the Chiang Shih is over but the Templars have paid a high price for victory. Even the Echo Team has not escaped unscathed, its commander returned a changed man with his thirst for vengeance quenched, but his spirit broken. It is the moment Simon Logan, the Necromancer has been waiting for. A daring prison break allows him to escape Templar control and vanish into the night. Newly promoted Captain Riley and the reformed Echo Team are given the job of tracking him down. But rather than waiting for Echo to come looking for him, the Necromancer takes the battle to them instead; luring former Commander Williams away from his home and stealing the physical form of his wife, Gabrielle, a woman caught somewhere between life and death. It is perhaps the one act that could rouse Cade from the grey haze his life has become. As he ruthlessly tracks the Necromancer through this world and the next, Cade can't help but ask himself what Logan might want with a half-dead woman and the man who had literally traveled to hell and back to rescue her. New York Times bestseller Joseph Nassise delivers another "tour-de-force of adrenaline-drenched mayhem" in the 4th book of the action-packed Templar Chronicles urban fantasy series.

Book excerpt: A Return to the Upper Room continues to be an in-depth study into the Holy Spirit, who is not a mere force. He is not energy. The Holy Spirit is a person and part of the Trinity along with the Father and the Son. God is Sovereign, and just so God wills and moves according to His will. Just so, the Spirit of the Lord moves and acts never out of His own accord, but always follows the leading of the Father. So the Spirit is interdependent, as there is a mutual dependency within the Trinity. The work of the Spirit is far greater in scope than merely the spiritual gifts, for the Spirit of the Lord leads us in our calling on the narrow path to the glory of the Lord. It is of utmost necessity for the Church to be one that is utterly and completely Spirit-filled and not led by the flesh. For only in the Spirit can we fulfil the Great Commission, be true disciples and walk in His truth, His way and His life. This volume of work explores in greater depth the Holy Spirit’s role in the church, thus in the life of disciples. It explores how revival is directly connected to the flow of the Spirit.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Just as one’s DNA is made of chemical building blocks called nucleotides, just so our spiritual composition is made up of building blocks. And such blocks all should form part of the foundation of our faith, with Jesus being the cornerstone. Our entire lives should be built upon Christ, and everything else should flow from God. For a true believer to survive the storms of life, while also thriving and prospering, we need to be grounded in Christ. We need to make sure our foundation is rock solid. And we need to make sure all our building blocks are in place. Unless such a true foundation is in place, where we are settled in the complete, beautiful, infallible, incorruptible and untainted truth and ways of God, we then remain in danger of being swept away by the storms of deceptions, lies, manipulation, extortions, seductions and spiritual corruption. After all, we cannot build a house unless the foundation is properly laid and secured. Just so, unless the foundation of our faith is properly built and sealed by the Blood of the Lamb, how shall we truly know who God is, fathom His Kingdom or follow His will? For in His will is life, hope, and our strength.
