Book excerpt: In 1980, I received a grant from Aoyama-gakuin university to come to the United States to assist American Industry improve the quality of their products. In a small way this was to repay the help the US had given Japan after the war. In the summer of 1980, I visited the AT&T Bell Laboratories Quality Assurance Center, the organization that founded modern quality control. The result of my first summer at AT&T was an experiment with an orthogonal array design of size 18 (OA18) for optimization of an LSI fabrication process. As a measure of quality, the quantity "signal-ta-noise" ratio was to be optimized. Since then, this experi mental approach has been named "robust design" and has attracted the attention of both engineers and statisticians. My colleagues at Bell Laboratories have written several expository articles and a few theoretical papers on robust design from the viewpoint of statistics. Because so many people have asked for copies of these papers, it has been decided to publish them in a book form. This anthology is the result of these efforts. Despite the fact that quality engineering borrows some technical words from traditional design of experiments, the goals of quality engineering are different from those of statistics. For example, suppose there are two vendors. One vendor supplies products whose quality characteristic has a normal distribution with the mean on target (the desired value) and a certain standard deviation.

Book excerpt: The main objective of this workshop was to review and discuss the state of the art and the latest advances· in the area of 1-10 Gbit/s throughput for local and metropolitan area networks. The first generation of local area networks had throughputs in the range 1-20 Mbit/s. Well-known examples of this first generation networks are the Ethernet and the Token Ring. The second generation of networks allowed throughputs in the range 100-200 Mbit/s. Representatives of this generation are the FDDI double ring and the DQDB (IEEE 802.6) networks. The third generation networks will have throughputs in the range 1-10 Gbit/s. The rapid development and deployment of fiber optics worldwide, as well as the projected emergence of a market for broadband services, have given rise to the development of broadband ISDN standards. Currently, the Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) appears to be a viable solution to broadband networks. The possibility of all-optical networks in the future is being examined. This would allow the tapping of approximately 50 terahertz or so available in the lightwave range of the frequency spectrum. It is envisaged that using such a high-speed network it will be feasible to distribute high-quality video to the home, to carry out rapid retrieval of radiological and other scientific images, and to enable multi-media conferencing between various parties.

Book excerpt: Network Routing: Algorithms, Protocols, and Architectures, Second Edition, explores network routing and how it can be broadly categorized into Internet routing, circuit-switched routing, and telecommunication transport network routing. The book systematically considers these routing paradigms, as well as their interoperability, discussing how algorithms, protocols, analysis, and operational deployment impact these approaches and addressing both macro-state and micro-state in routing. Readers will learn about the evolution of network routing, the role of IP and E.164 addressing and traffic engineering in routing, the impact on router and switching architectures and their design, deployment of network routing protocols, and lessons learned from implementation and operational experience. Numerous real-world examples bring the material alive. Extensive coverage of routing in the Internet, from protocols (such as OSPF, BGP), to traffic engineering, to security issues A detailed coverage of various router and switch architectures, IP lookup and packet classification methods A comprehensive treatment of circuit-switched routing and optical network routing New topics such as software-defined networks, data center networks, multicast routing Bridges the gap between theory and practice in routing, including the fine points of implementation and operational experience Accessible to a wide audience due to its vendor-neutral approach

Book excerpt: The aim of these series of volumes "Advances in Petri Nets" is to present to the general computer science community the most significant recent results with regard to the development in the area. The main source of the papers are the annual European Workshops on Applications and Theory of Petri Nets"; the highest ranked papers from the past workshops are considered for the series, i.e., they are again reviewed and accordingly revised or extended. In addition to the workshop papers, the "Advances" also present invited papers. The present volume Advances in Petri Nets 1987 covers the 7th "European Workshop on Applications and Theory of Petri Nets" held in Oxford, Great Britain, in June 1986. It also contains a survey on complexity of problems related to Petri nets written by R.R. Howell and L.E. Rosier. A special feature of this volume is a bibliography on Petri nets, containing more than 2000 entries.
