This book was released on 2014-05-01 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book postulates the proposition that small economies exhibit a higher degree of outward orientation and structural adaptability, compared to their larger counterparts within the context of the European Union and two case studies (i.e. Catalonia and New Zealand). The number of nations has doubled in the last half of the century to around 200 independent economic units. Moreover, the break-up of the former Soviet bloc into a large number of small independent nations in Central and Eastern Europe, and the continued threat of separatist groups (i.e. Canada, Spain, and Sri Lanka) have sparked economists' interest to focus on the size of nations once again. This book offers a more comprehensive measurement of smallness than the conventional one for the analysis of the globalization strategies and flexibility of countries to overcome smallness. Small independent economic units, when economically successful, tend to be more export focused in manufacturing, likely to specialize in differentiated manufactures, more actively involved with direct overseas businesses, more sensitive in strategically managing exchange rates, likely to be in a better position to achieve price stability, more actively involved in international trade through varying degrees of economic integration, likely to have a higher degree of flexibility, more actively involved to forge a complementary government-firm relationship, and likely to have a higher degree of corporatism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Globalization, an inevitable phenomenon in human history, has been bringing the world closer through exchange of goods and services, advancements in information communication technologies (ICTs), global diffusion of technologies, and cultural awareness. Recent developments and trends within the global business arena present managers with challenging situations. Competing in the twenty-first century and beyond requires firms to invest in the increasingly refined managerial skills needed to perform effectively in a multicultural business environment. Global companies are faced with varied and dynamic environments in which they must accurately assess the political, legal, technological, ethical, and cultural factors that shape their strategies and operations. The success of a company's global operation often depends significantly on the manager's cultural skills, as well as the ability to carry out the company's strategy within the context of the host country's business practices. While globalization is a vehicle for, and a consequence of human progress, it is also a confused process that requires change. The change process presents the manager with challenging strategic options. Globalization of Business: Theories and Strategies for Tomorrow's Managers addresses the above challenges. It offers managers and business students strategies on how to become globally competitive in a complex international management environment. Contributors to the volume offer their insights into the issues every global manager needs to understand such as the nature of the global business environment, entry mode choice, global strategic positioning, global human resource management, human rights and ethical issues. The book covers general as well as specific topics, including assumptions, theories, and practices of globalization. It is expected that the book will enable business students, managers and corporate leaders to avoid common drawbacks in their quest to build a successful global firm that will benefit all.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the end of the twentieth century, international business functioned in an environment dominated by the triad of economic power formed by the USA, Japan and the European Community. Multinational corporate strategies had to be formulated within the context of intense global competition between these three economic blocs. This book, first published in 1990, analyses the interplay between the trade policies adopted by the major powers and the competitive strategies of international corporations. With particular reference to trade relations between Canada and the USA, the effects of Japanese multinational dominance and the implications of European economic integration, this volume throws new light on the interaction between international business and government trade policies.

Book excerpt: Entrepreneurship and globalization are two much-examined forces as we enter the new millennium--yet very little has been published on the intersection of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and the global economy. To close the gap, this volume delves into the intricate roles and consequences of such businesses on both global and domestic economies. The first part of the volume provides an overview of the phenomenon of globalization, arguing that entrepreneurial discovery and technological change lead to globalization, which in turn leads to further opportunity for entrepreneurial discovery--no less for SMEs than for multinational corporations. In part two, the essays examine the role of SMEs in the global economy and why they are thriving. Part three reviews the roles of SMEs and innovators and examines their roles in direct foreign investment. Part four explores the role of technological diversity and knowledge spillovers as a way to explain the superior innovative performance of SMEs. Part five looks at the role of SMEs in technology transfer. Finally, part six examines the theoretical and policy implications of the international activities of SMEs, suggesting that policies should aim to reduce the costs in international expansion for SMEs. This volume will provide the foundation for further study in SMEs and globalization. It will appeal to scholars and students in both international business and economics. Zoltan J. Acs is Professor of Economics and Finance, University of Baltimore. Bernard Yin Yeung is Professor of International Business, University of Michigan.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book identifies the driving forces behind globalization and proposes innovative ways for small and medium-enterprises (SMEs) to confront them. More than ever, sustainable competitive advantage requires SMEs to continually adapt their strategy and confront new and current competition in the international market. SMEs working with multinational companies could also benefit from winning strategies based on a sensible analysis of rational and irrational phenomena at the micro- and macro-economic levels. This book uses different models developed and established through international business experiences to determine the relevant strategy in the global market. It illustrates each model through real, successful case studies of globalization of factor, efficiency, and innovation-driven SMEs. It will benefit scholars of entrepreneurship, international business, regional development as well as managers, governmental institutions, and regional development, and consultants to SMEs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This groundbreaking text provides both theory and strategy for operating in a semiglobal economy in which international businesses must compete in highly globalized and highly localized markets at the same time. Unlike the traditional transnational and matrix corporate models, a semiglobal corporation organizes its operations according to the global/local content of its value propositions rather than according to geographical regions, products, or contribution to the parent company's performance. As an example of a semiglobal corporation, the Honda Motor Company has a global vision when it comes to highly global bundles like car engines, and a local vision when it comes to highly localized car financing and servicing. Designed as a supplementary text for courses in international business, development economics, marketing, and strategic planning, "Business Strategy in a Semiglobal Economy" raises important challenges to the conventional models of business organization and the competitive strategies that proceed from them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past two decades, the percentage of the world’s population living on less than a dollar a day has been cut in half. How much of that improvement is because of—or in spite of—globalization? While anti-globalization activists mount loud critiques and the media report breathlessly on globalization’s perils and promises, economists have largely remained silent, in part because of an entrenched institutional divide between those who study poverty and those who study trade and finance. Globalization and Poverty bridges that gap, bringing together experts on both international trade and poverty to provide a detailed view of the effects of globalization on the poor in developing nations, answering such questions as: Do lower import tariffs improve the lives of the poor? Has increased financial integration led to more or less poverty? How have the poor fared during various currency crises? Does food aid hurt or help the poor? Poverty, the contributors show here, has been used as a popular and convenient catchphrase by parties on both sides of the globalization debate to further their respective arguments. Globalization and Poverty provides the more nuanced understanding necessary to move that debate beyond the slogans.

McMaken also examines small states which are often examples of successful cases of secession and radical decentralization. The reader will come away with a better understanding of how political decentralization continues to be relevant, useful, and important in the modern world.

Book excerpt: The eclectic paradigm has arguably become the dominant theoretical basis in the study of FDI, multinational corporations and internationalisation over the last two decades. The contributions to this volume evaluate the eclectic paradigm in the global economy and its validity as a theoretical basis to understand developments such as economic globalization and the subsequent growth of global and alliance capitalism.
