Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Boltzmann and Vlasov equations played a great role in the past and still play an important role in modern natural sciences, technique and even philosophy of science. Classical Boltzmann equation derived in 1872 became a cornerstone for the molecular-kinetic theory, the second law of thermodynamics (increasing entropy) and derivation of the basic hydrodynamic equations. After modifications, the fields and numbers of its applications have increased to include diluted gas, radiation, neutral particles transportation, atmosphere optics and nuclear reactor modelling. Vlasov equation was obtained in 1938 and serves as a basis of plasma physics and describes large-scale processes and galaxies in astronomy, star wind theory. This book provides a comprehensive review of both equations and presents both classical and modern applications. In addition, it discusses several open problems of great importance. Reviews the whole field from the beginning to today Includes practical applications Provides classical and modern (semi-analytical) solutions

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume studies the basic equations of kinetic theory in all of space. It contains up-to-date, state-of-the-art treatments of initial-value problems for the major kinetic equations, including the Boltzmann equation (from rarefied gas dynamics) and the Vlasov-Poisson/Vlasov-Maxwell systems (from plasma physics). This is the only existing book to treat Boltzmann-type problems and Vlasov-type problems together. Although these equations describe very different phenomena, they share the same streaming term. The author proves that solutions starting from a given configuration at an initial time exist for all future times by imposing appropriate hypotheses on the initial values in several important cases. He emphasizes those questions that a mathematician would ask first: Is there a solution to this problem? Is it unique? Can it be numerically approximated? The topics treated include the study of the Boltzmann collision operator, the study of the initial-value problem for the Boltzmann equation with "small" and "near equilibrium" data, global smooth solvability of the initial-value problem for the Vlasov-Poisson system with smooth initial data of unrestricted size, conditions under which the initial-value problem for the Vlasov-Maxwell system has global-in-time solutions (in both the smooth and weak senses), and more.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers a variety of topics related to kinetic theory in neutral gases and magnetized plasmas, with extensions to other systems such as quantum plasmas and granular flows. A comprehensive presentation is given for the Boltzmann equations and other kinetic equations for a neutral gas, together with the derivations of compressible and incompressible fluid dynamical systems, and their rigorous justification. Several contributions are devoted to collisionless magnetized plasmas. Rigorous results concerning the well-posedness of the Vlasov-Maxwell system are presented. Special interest is devoted to asymptotic regimes where the scales of variation of the electromagnetic field are clearly separated from those associated with the gyromotion of the particles. This volume collects lectures given at the Short Course and Workshop on Kinetic Theory organized at the Fields Institute of Mathematical Sciences in Toronto during the Spring of 2004.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Relativistic kinetic theory has widespread application in astrophysics and cosmology. The interest has grown in recent years as experimentalists are now able to make reliable measurements on physical systems where relativistic effects are no longer negligible. This ambitious monograph is divided into three parts. It presents the basic ideas and concepts of this theory, equations and methods, including derivation of kinetic equations from the relativistic BBGKY hierarchy and discussion of the relation between kinetic and hydrodynamic levels of description. The second part introduces elements of computational physics with special emphasis on numerical integration of Boltzmann equations and related approaches, as well as multi-component hydrodynamics. The third part presents an overview of applications ranging from covariant theory of plasma response, thermalization of relativistic plasma, comptonization in static and moving media to kinetics of self-gravitating systems, cosmological structure formation and neutrino emission during the gravitational collapse.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The material collected in this volume reflects the active present of this area of mathematics, ranging from the abstract theory of gradient flows to stochastic representations of non-linear parabolic PDE's. Articles will highlight the present as well as expected future directions of development of the field with particular emphasis on applications. The article by Ambrosio and Savaré discusses the most recent development in the theory of gradient flow of probability measures. After an introduction reviewing the properties of the Wasserstein space and corresponding subdifferential calculus, applications are given to evolutionary partial differential equations. The contribution of Herrero provides a description of some mathematical approaches developed to account for quantitative as well as qualitative aspects of chemotaxis. Particular attention is paid to the limits of cell's capability to measure external cues on the one hand, and to provide an overall description of aggregation models for the slim mold Dictyostelium discoideum on the other. The chapter written by Masmoudi deals with a rather different topic - examples of singular limits in hydrodynamics. This is nowadays a well-studied issue given the amount of new results based on the development of the existence theory for rather general systems of equations in hydrodynamics. The paper by DeLellis addreses the most recent results for the transport equations with regard to possible applications in the theory of hyperbolic systems of conservation laws. Emphasis is put on the development of the theory in the case when the governing field is only a BV function. The chapter by Rein represents a comprehensive survey of results on the Poisson-Vlasov system in astrophysics. The question of global stability of steady states is addressed in detail. The contribution of Soner is devoted to different representations of non-linear parabolic equations in terms of Markov processes. After a brief introduction on the linear theory, a class of non-linear equations is investigated, with applications to stochastic control and differential games. The chapter written by Zuazua presents some of the recent progresses done on the problem of controllabilty of partial differential equations. The applications include the linear wave and heat equations, parabolic equations with coefficients of low regularity, and some fluid-structure interaction models. - Volume 1 focuses on the abstract theory of evolution - Volume 2 considers more concrete probelms relating to specific applications - Volume 3 reflects the active present of this area of mathematics, ranging from the abstract theory of gradient flows to stochastic representations of non-linear PDEs

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theory of Fully Ionized Plasmas deals with the theory of fully ionized plasmas, with emphasis on their resistant groups, namely, electrons and nuclei. A model of the fully ionized plasma is presented based in part on the assumption that the system is sufficiently large so that the behavior of its individuals is not affected by the presence of boundaries. Where this assumption is applied the fully ionized plasma is called a Coulomb system. Comprised of six chapters, this book begins with a discussion on the Coulomb system as the fully ionized system in the quasi-static electromagnetic field. The equilibrium and non-equilibrium states of this Coulomb system, with or without individual particle correlations, are considered. The macroscopic and microscopic qualities of the Coulomb system are also described, together with its partition function and Landau's solution to the Vlasov equation. The second part explores the fully ionized system in the general electromagnetic field and addresses single-particle radiation and many-particle interactions with electromagnetic fields. This monograph is intended for graduate students and research workers in the field of plasma physics, astrophysics, or related topics.
