Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This timely study examines how the environmental impact of modern warfare violates fundamental principles of international environmental and humanitarian laws and why these consideration need to be included in rules of armed conflict. If direct attacks on innocent civilians are universally recognized as unacceptable then environ-mental devastation of their habitat by acts of war must also be recognized as an unacceptable consequence of armed conflict. The author presents the case that the international community understand its responsibility to curb environ-mental consequences of modern weaponry and incorporate environmental concerns into the conventions regulating armed conflict. Book Synopsis The Caribbean and Central America by : Jeromy S. Lane
Download or read book The Caribbean and Central America written by Jeromy S. Lane and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2002 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the course of its history, the United States has taken great interest in the affairs of its neighbours to the south. From the Monroe Doctrine to Grenada to illegal immigration, America has been and continues to be an active force in the lives of Caribbean and Central American nations. In recent years, the relationships have taken an economic turn as witnessed by several pacts like the Caribbean Basin Initiative and NAFTA, meant to balance the US-dominated relations with these closely-packed countries. In addition, the US has had an enigmatic history with Mexico, involving issues like immigration, drug smuggling, and human rights. The public friendship between Presidents George W Bush and Vicente Fox increased optimism for smooth resolutions of US-Mexican financial and political concerns. However, some friction has remained over American border and security worries, water-usage disputes, and the continual problem of narcotics trafficking. This book compiles a series of analyses of the varied initiatives and governmental actions linking the US to its nearest southern neighbours. present status, and evaluated for potential outcomes. Such comprehensive studies combined in one book make for a necessary resource in attempting to assess the future course of relations among the Americas.

Book Synopsis Domestic Politics and International Narcotics Control by : Victor J. Hinojosa
Download or read book Domestic Politics and International Narcotics Control written by Victor J. Hinojosa and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2007-11-21 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines different levels of narcotics control cooperation between the United States, Mexico and Colombia. Victor J. Hinojosa finds that Mexico is consistently held to a very different standard than Colombia and that the US often satisfies domestic political pressures to be tough on drugs by punishing Colombia while allowing Mexico much more freedom to pursue different strategies. He also explores the role of domestic terrorism and presidential reputation in Colombia for the US-Colombia pair and the role of competing issues in the US-Mexican bilateral agenda for that country pair, finding that congressional pressure and electoral tests exert the most impact on US behavior but that Mexican and Colombian behavior is best explained in other ways. Together, these findings suggest both the promise of integrating the study of international relations and comparative politics and important limitations of the theoretical framework.
