Book Synopsis Regional Change in Industrializing Asia by : Leo van Grunsven
Download or read book Regional Change in Industrializing Asia written by Leo van Grunsven and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-01-04 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1998 this boo responds to the dynamics of Industrializing Asia and the behavioural changes of actors which, in response to changing internal and external forces, have given rise to and are constantly giving rise to alterations in patterns of growth. From a geographical perspective, these are expressed in regional change, understood as a reconstruction of spatial organization. The imperatives of dynamic comparative advantage, changing global or regional competitiveness, and regional competition, faced by different actors, entities or territorial units can be identified as important forces underlying and shaping regional change. This volume provides further illumination, contextualization and interpretation of the spatiality of the economic reality in Industrializing Asia, as well as the role played by, and the implications for, different actors. The objectives of this book are 1) to outline the processes of regional change, linked to responses in the form of restructuring and integrative and regionalization tendencies, as well as the realignment of the global-regional-local divide in production systems/complexes and the operation of firms associated with reorganization of production in the process of maintaining and reconfiguring comparative advantage; 2) to highlight the wide scope of the process by considering differential units of analysis, linked to the agents and manifestations of regional change, and the role of scale in terms of the spatial units involved; 3) to highlight the implications as to the current and future position or role of differential actors/agents (particularly nation state) in shaping the new economic reality in the region and as a corollary, its positioning in the global economic order.

Download or read book The Orang Suku Laut of Riau, Indonesia written by Cynthia Chou and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2009-10-16 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Land reform has been an indisputable part of Indonesian revolution. The consequent execution of development programmes for nation-building have provoked intense hostility over territorial rights. Global market forces in Indonesia have seen increasing flows of transnational investments, technology and resources that have resulted in great demand on sea and land spaces. In this momentum of change, several aspects of rural culture including indigenous populations, like the Orang Suku Laut (people of the sea) of Riau have been deemed by the state architects of development programmes to hinder progress. For generations, the sea and coastal places have been the life and living spaces of the Orang Suku Laut and they claim ownership to these territories based upon customary laws. The developmental pressure thus generated has led to intense struggles over territorial rights. It has also raised issues concerning the social assimilation of indigenous peoples as citizens, religious conversion and cultural identity. Cynthia Chou discusses how Indonesian nation-building development programmes have generated intense struggles over issues pertaining to territorial rights, social assimilation of indigenous peoples as citizens, religious conversion and cultural identity This book is a stimulating read for those interested in Social and Cultural Anthropology, Development Studies and Southeast Asian Studies.

Download or read book Yen Bloc written by C. H. Kwan and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2004-06-23 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this important new book, C.H. Kwan asks whether the Japanese yen can, or will, replace the dollar as the key currency in East Asia. Kwan analyzes the implications for Japan and Asia's developing countries should they come together to form a yen bloc—a grouping of countries that use the yen as an international currency and maintain stable exchange rates against the yen. Combining academic analysis with his experience advising the Japanese prime minister and the Japanese minister of finance, Kwan concludes that a yen bloc might benefit Asia's developing countries—as well as Japan—while contributing to a more stable international monetary order. Kwan's book represents the first attempt to explore systematically the possibility of monetary integration in Asia. It also provides a vision for regional integration in Asia in the twenty-first century.
Book Synopsis Learning from SARS by : Institute of Medicine
Download or read book Learning from SARS written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2004-04-26 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The emergence of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) in late 2002 and 2003 challenged the global public health community to confront a novel epidemic that spread rapidly from its origins in southern China until it had reached more than 25 other countries within a matter of months. In addition to the number of patients infected with the SARS virus, the disease had profound economic and political repercussions in many of the affected regions. Recent reports of isolated new SARS cases and a fear that the disease could reemerge and spread have put public health officials on high alert for any indications of possible new outbreaks. This report examines the response to SARS by public health systems in individual countries, the biology of the SARS coronavirus and related coronaviruses in animals, the economic and political fallout of the SARS epidemic, quarantine law and other public health measures that apply to combating infectious diseases, and the role of international organizations and scientific cooperation in halting the spread of SARS. The report provides an illuminating survey of findings from the epidemic, along with an assessment of what might be needed in order to contain any future outbreaks of SARS or other emerging infections.

Chapter 2 focuses on the home environment of Japanese firms, and with comparisons drawn wih the US economy, illustrate how, as the economy has restructured and modernized in the post-war period, firm behaviour has evolved too. Chapter 3 is an assessment of the concept of strategic behaviour of governments and firms, what it might look like and how it matters to trade and investment. Chapter 4 focuses on an examination of East Asian trade patterns with Japan and their evolution, while Chapter 5 focuses - through firm level comparisons and surveys - on patterns of FDI, in particular on production networks in the region. Regression analysis is used in Chapter 6 to test for the significance of 'strategic' behaviour by governments as a determinant of FDI.
