Book excerpt: An existing computer code for simulation of texture development in polycrystals has been modified to model ''pencil glide'' as observed in some bcc metals. Pencil glide can be thought of as a limiting case where the slip direction is restricted to (111) directions but the slip plane is arbitrary. The existing code simulates ''restricted glide'', i.e., (111)(110) slip systems, by using the Bishop-Hill method to find the ative vertex of the single crystal yield surface for each grain. It then corrects this trial solution by using a nonlinear viscous law based on the total (111)-resolved stress component. Only a small increase in computation time required is required compared to restricted glide. The results of the pencil glide modification of the code are that the texture development in tension is essentially the same as for restricted glide but that significant differences appear in plane strain compression (rolling). The Taylor Factor in tension for a random polycrystal is found to be 2.74. 20 refs., 5 figs., 1 tab.

Despite their successes in coarse graining, existing theories are found unable to explain stochastic defect dynamics. To resolve this, the author defines crystal defects through projection operators, without any recourse to elasticity. By rigorous dimensional reduction, explicit analytical forms are derived for the stochastic forces acting on crystal defects, allowing new quantitative insight into the role of thermal fluctuations in crystal plasticity.

They can reproduce usefully total energies for many systems. But when one turns to elastic properties, fracture of surfaces, and the vacancy formation energy, deficiencies and limitations begin to emerge. These limitations of the simple pair potential approximation have been addressed by the development of empirical many-body potentials which is the major theme of our book.Over a decade or more, diverse scientists have recognized that many of the structures common in their experiments have a special kind of geometrical complexity. The key to this progress is the recognition that many random structures obey a symmetry that objects look the same on many different scales of observation. The concept of fractals was introduced by Mandelbrot and applied to fractures by himself and collaborators. Their work pointed to a correlation between toughness and the fractal dimension. Our interest is the fractal aspects of fractured surfaces. We will discuss more in our book.The strain field of a dislocation has a long range part and this part can be discussed rigorously from elasticity theory. Recent progress in elastic strain fields and dislocation mobility were made by Indenbom and Lothe. The elementary essentials will be introduced in our book.
