Book excerpt: "Judge Charles P. Avery, of Owego, published, in a monthly magazine, St. Nicholas, an early history of the Susquehanna Valley. Most of the information was obtained from the pioneering settlers. The title of Judge Avery’s history was, “The Susquehanna Valley, Gleanings from the Indian and Pioneer History.” This work was the foundation of all the early histories of Tioga County, NY and had it not been written, the information would have been entirely lost. St. Nicholas Magazine was published in 1853 and 1854 through the Owego Gazette office. After a fire in that office, all copies not delivered to subscribers were burned. The subsequent editor (Leroy Wilson Kingman) of the Owego Gazette received multiple requests to reprint the "Gleanings," as the articles were called, since the history would otherwise be lost. In response to these requests Kingman, in 1900 reprinted, in serial form, “The Susquehanna Valley.” This modern volume is the first publication in illustrated book form; making broadly available the foundational history of the settlement of Tioga County and the Susquehanna Valley for the first time in more than 120 years." -- page [4] of cover.
